I think that would only be helpful if you were all planning on
replacing your current vehicle(s) at the same time. And my
understanding is that Subarus last at least as long as Toyotas and
Hondas, which is just this side of forever :)

Well, another Hosstraders is behind us, and we survived.

We didn't get there until late, but it was glad to be able to chat
with Mike and Heather for a short bit at least. I was amused that Ted
was wearing the same outback pocket-master cargo-vest I was -- was Ted
scarred by Captain Kangaroo too?

Maybe someday I'll get to a non-Hosstraders GNHLUG meeting ;-)

(Note for Mike -- it may be that 256 v 384 is key for Ubuntu, as it
really doesn't seem to like our smaller Lifebook. Xubuntu didn't
either, though, which bothers me. Puppy seems to run as Root, and
DSL's mutant mixed Woody-kernel, Sarge-apps Debian seems like it would
be a nightmare to keep up on patches with, so I'm not sure what to
do.)

I have (but didn't wear on Friday, when I was at Hosstraders) my
Banana Republic photographers vest (from the olden days pre-Gap, when
Banana Republic was really about safari style, not yuppies).

I'll wear it to the next Hosstraders, we should get a photo of all us
together and start a class action lawsuit. :) Or maybe it's just

In a similar vein, it has been established that Subaru is the
official vehicle of either GNHLUG, Hosstraders, or both. I own one,
so does Mike Ledoux, so does Ted Roche, and Matt and Heather Brodeur
own two. Meanwhile, Forresters were crawling around Hosstraders like
ants at a picnic.

I think we should negotiate a volume discount with a dealership.

And Bill has owned four 4WD wagons and three Justys,
before graduating to the GPLmobile...

Actually I think Subaru is the official vehicle of New Hampshire.

Hosstraders Fall 2006 - Mission Accomplished

2006-10-08 Thread Ben Scott

Well, another Hosstraders is behind us, and we survived.

I just wanted to send out a quick Thank you to everyone who helped
out at Hosstraders this fall. Partipants included Jon maddog Hall
(who paid for the space and tables (as usual)), Mike Ledoux (a!),
Matt and Heather Brodeur (who are starting to rival Mike in the
amount of junk brought to Hosstraders category), Bill Sconce (who
wins the award for Best Hat), and Ted Roche (Ted knows he *has* to
be there). Your efforts are all appreciated.

It didn't rain either day. Now that the Sox have won a World Series
recently, I'm starting to worry. It's a good thing Windows Vista is
still late, or I'd think the Apocalypse was upon us.

Most popular distro this year was definitely Ubuntu. Although the
age of Fedora 5 might have contributed to that, the Live CD aspect
was definitely the big draw. SuSE is also offering a Live DVD these
days; I've tried it briefly and was impressed with what I saw. You
might want to check out SuSE 10.1. We also had a couple requests for
Slackware 11.0, which was just released this past week. Good to see
Slackware is still going strong after all these years.

I had a laptop with the wrong OS on the hard disk. I booted it from
a Puppy Linux CD. Puppy automatically copied itself to RAM disk. I
was then able to eject the Puppy CD, and use the drive in the laptop
to burn distros served over Ethernet. Neat.

As noted in the past, these days, Linux is widely recognized at
Hosstraders. People who had *not* heard of it are a small minority.
Most had at least tried Linux before, and many were already using it,
and just looking for upgrades or info on the LUG.

Someone dropped off a flyer for a hamfest/flea market that will take
place in Londonderry on Sat 4 Nov. While two Hosstraders events per
year is enough for me, if anyone is interested, email me and I'll
forward you the details.

 Cheers!
