Ordered 'em -- thanks for the pointer [WAS Re: Linux Stickers]

2007-10-09 Thread Carl Helmers

Brian,

per the tip I got in  my GNHLUG e-mail this morning from Matt Brodur,
I have now filled my
need for stickers by ordering a few "Penguin Power" sticker sheets from
"cheapbytes.com"
-- as well as the latest Suse 10.3 DVD to save the bother of doing a
download then burning one...

A site called Washington Promotions & Printing – DemStore.com - says
they can print these in 1x5/8" in 2-color gloss white paper background
for $170.85 per roll of 1000 (plus shipping).

My original idea was to mark items I'll be selling at the new company I
recently started, but the text can easily be changed to accommodate a
more general usage. My new company is called "Just Works" and will be
selling linux desktops ro the general non-techie public. I think both
Ubuntu and Mandriva have come a long way, and I'm taking a leap by going
with Mandriva in an OEM deal. A PNG of the image I came up with is at:
http://www.justworksnh.com/justworks_linux_1_x_.625_.png and my original
plan was to plaster these stickers everywhere the "Works with Vista"
stickers would go... In other words on every piece of hardware I sell.

Other text possibilities might be:
"Compatible with LINUX"
"Works with LINUX"
"Made for LINUX"
"Powered by LINUX"
...etc.

If you like, I can do the run for my company and a separate one that is
more general. Any preferences on the text?

Looks like CheapBytes now sells the "original" Penguin Power
stickers. One of the sizes on that sheet is perfect for covering up
Windows stickers.

Re: Linux Stickers

2007-10-07 Thread Jon 'maddog' Hall
I did come googling, and nothing really popped out at me. The Linux
Journal make some "Linux is cool" stickers long ago, but they have not
done that for a while. Thinkgeek has stickers, but most of them are
very large and expensive.

In the spirit of Linux you could make your own

At the site:

http://users.jyu.fi/~juhtolv/linux-sticker/

They have examples of stickers.

While most of the stickers are in Applixware format (a prime example of
why ODF is needed), there is a page of them in Postscript format:
linux3x8.ps.bz2

You could use them as a sample, create the master with some word
processor and a simple Tux figure, duplicate it some number of times on
a sheet of paper, print them off on paper-backed glossy print gummy
label paper and cut them to size.

Or you can create the design, then go to a print shop to have them print
it and cut them up for you. Here is an article about using a foil
material:

http://people.debian.org/%7Eseppy/foilstickers/

available at print shops. Once you do it one time you could probably
just call them up and order more without going to the shop.

And there are other materials for printing (clear plastic, etc.)

Not small. Not quantity. Expensive.

To reiterate:

I can get Tux case badges for $.68 but I'm looking for cheaper, vinyl or
metallic decals to put on hardware like cases, monitors, keyboards,
mice, etc.

Linux Stickers

2007-10-06 Thread Brian Chabot
Does anyone know of a good source for various Linux stickers/decals?

I'm looking for anything small, like those "Made for Windows" or "Works
with Vista" stickers in quantity. I know Ubuntu stickers are around,
but I am looking for something not specific to any distribution.

Any ideas?
