If you're set up to build your own kernels you could

   make menuconfig

and select Processor Type and Features where you can rig
your kernel such that it's better able to recognize your
particular processor. It's possible that your distribution
ships with its kernels in some lowest-common-denominator
configuration that isn't able to grok your CPU.

Again, I appologize for not being more specific in that I am seeing this at
during POST. I am thinking it may be something in the bios, but I don't see
anything about a processor type in there.

OT: Help with computer config

2003-07-08 Thread numberwhun
Hello everyone! My appologies for the OT post, but I am having a small amount
of trouble with my new Linux box. I just built the machine ( it is an AMD
Athlon XP 1700, 1.47ghz). My problem is, when it boots, it registers the
following on the main screen:

 Unknown Processor ( 1.100 ghz )

The problem is, it is not recognizing my processor and the 'ghz' is definately
off. I have an MSI K7TTurbo - Socket A motherboard. I am just wondering, since
it has been so very long since I built a computer, if anyone knows what is wrong
that the processor is not recognized? Any ideas are greatly appreciated!!!
I have Linux installed and running, no problem, but I would really like it to
see the processor.

Regards,

Jeff Kirkland

Jeff,

try rebuilding the kernel and telling it you have an Athlon-class CPU.
hopefully that will help.

what does the BIOS say? does it think you have a 1.47 ghz proc?

Actually, I think that is where the problem lies. I am seeing this at the boot
screen during POST, around the memory check. I haven't done anything with the
Linux kernel as of yet. I wanted to solve the system level issue before
optimizin the kernel.

Jeff Kirkland

Try upgrading the BIOS itself. Searching on Google Groups for MSI K7T
Turbo unknown processor indicates that there is a CPU recognition issue
with older BIOS revs. The MSI web site should have the new version and an
update utility.

Just off the top of my head, you might want to make sure that you have
the latest BIOS revision. Also, check you BIOS settings and make sure
that you have the right clock multiplier settings.

I was actually looking at this, but wasn't really sure how to go about figuring
out how to set the clock multiplier. Can anyone give some further insight on
setting this?

Jeff

It is dependent entirely on the motherboard. Check with the OEM and get a
manual.

But first, do as others have suggested, and check for a firmware update.
The processor identification code in BIOSes is often unaware of newer
processors, and an update is needed to fix that.
