Re: Streaming media
Actually, it can't.. You have to use either Shout (old) or ices (new) and both weren't that good for options. On Nov 6, 2006, at 11:28 AM, Thomas Charron wrote: Icecast can stream files directly from the drive. I don't know about XMMS/WinAmp, but iTunes and Rhythmbox will play music shared that way. The doc says it can advertise shoutcast streams and supports dynamic playlists. See http://www.mt-daapd.org or apt-get it from debian/testing. -marc -- Marc Nozell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> http://www.nozell.com/blog ___ gnhlug-discuss mailing list gnhlug-discuss@mail.gnhlug.org http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-discuss/

If you want users to be able to choose the music they want, check out slimserver. It's the server software for the SliMP3/Squeezebox, but it's open source and has a java emulator if you like. You can also attach to it via your favorite player that streams URLs. It also has plugins to connect to shoutcast, BBC, and Sirius and XM 'net feeds. I have the server at home, set up a VPN, and listen to my audio collection from work. Very handy. http://www.slimdevices.com/ -Mark ___ gnhlug-discuss mailing list gnhlug-discuss@mail.gnhlug.org http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-discuss/

Why not just use NFS/Samba/whatever and share the files that way? Re: Streaming media
I've used Apache::MP3 when i was looking into this for that band I am such a big fan of. Of course due to bandwidth limitations from my host I never bothered to try it out for general consumption. I still had the entry in my httpd.conf under my virtual host (locally, not on the main server). Basically I added this: SetHandler perl-script PerlHandler Apache::MP3 PerlSetVar AllowDownload no PerlSetVar AllowStream yes PerlSetVar CheckStreamClient yes Stick all the mp3's in the Directory and bam... No problems. Stream-o-matic. PS - What was your work address again? Check out gnump3d. After going through the same iteration that you are going through, I found it to be exactly what I needed/wanted and it took literally two minutes to get up and running.
