Re: installing Linux by floppy to get driver
My old 486 didn't have a builtin CDROM. I had an Adaptec 1542b and an external SCSI CD ROM. Redhat, Mandrake, etc all work just fine with that setup. The CD can be from a mac or sun as well. Any SCSI CD-ROM drive will work with CDs in the boxed set (stamped). Older drives can have issues with CD-R disks. CD-RW can only be read on newer drives. Matthew J. installing Linux by floppy to get driver
I have a friend at work who has an older i486 and wants to install Linux onto it, perhaps to run Apache or something. The problem is that he doesn't have the CD ROM driver for it. I know that the IDE driver is built into the Linux kernel (or I think it is), but his is a SCSI model -- it's a Digital Celebris model, or something like that. Since he can't use the CD ROM drive, he can't install Linux by CD. We found a floppy-based distro called DLX (http://www.wu-wien.ac.at/usr/h93/h9301726/dlx.html), which I was thinking could get Linux up and running, but how to get him the SCSI CD-ROM driver? Once the CD drive works, we can just install a regular distribution or something. Any suggestions? I've done a bunch of these with Redhat, and it's always worked great. Of course, this assumes you have a second box you can use as the nfs server. -- John Abreau / Executive Director, Boston Linux Unix IM: [EMAIL PROTECTED] / abreauj@aim / abreauj@yahoo / 28611923@icq Email [EMAIL PROTECTED] / WWW http://www.abreau.net / PGP-Key-ID 0xD5C7B5D9 PGP-Key-Fingerprint 72 FB 39 4F 3C 3B D6 5B E0 C8 5A 6E F1 2C BE 99 Some people say, The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
