Ok. The reason I asked is that if we only go for having 'ti_ER' translations in CVS and calling them 'ti_ER.po', then those translations would by default only be availiable to ti_ER users. This means that while a ti_ER user would automatically get the nice Tigrinyan translations you've produced, a ti_ET user would not get any Tigrinyan translations at all, but rather be left with an untranslated English desktop by default. On the other hand, if we go for having 'ti' translations in CVS and calling those translations 'ti.po', then those translations would by default be automatically availiable to both ti_ER users and ti_ET users and all other ti_* users. This is a direct consequence of how the locale selection mechanism works by default. It tries to find an exact locale match if possible, and if that doesn't work, it tries to find a language match. So, for a user in the ti_ET locale, the automatic translation selection process would work (roughly) like this: 1. Try to find a 'ti_ET' translation. Is there one? YES --> Use the 'ti_ET' translation. Done. NO -+ | +-> 2. Try to find a 'ti' translation. Is there one? YES --> Use the 'ti' translation. Done. NO --> We couldn't find a suitable translation. Use the default 'C' locale translation (i.e. no translation at all and original English messages). Done. If I understand you correctly, you're fine with having only a single "Tigrinya" translation team in GNOME, at least as long as no one is volunteering for a seperate ti_ET translation effort. Bugzilla is our bug tracker that we use for tracking bug reports in software, and, in this case also translations. Please reply to that mail as soon as possible. Other than that, please ask around on this mailing list or at the IRC channel #i18n on irc.gnome.org if you need help getting started. An introduction to the translation process can be found at http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gtp/l10n-guide/. I'd recommend starting with translating GNOME 2.10. You can find a list of included software in GNOME 2.10 at the translation status pages on http://l10n-status.gnome.org/gnome-2.10/ under the "desktop" and "developer-libs" sections. Those are the things to translate for full support of the official GNOME release. You can get the potfiles to translate for GNOME 2.10, as an example, from the http://l10n-status.gnome.org/gnome-2.10/ia/developer-libs/ and http://l10n-status.gnome.org/gnome-2.10/ia/desktop/ pages. You'll get your own http://l10n-status.gnome.org/gnome-2.10/ti/developer-libs/ and http://l10n-status.gnome.org/gnome-2.10/ti/desktop/ translation statusages as soon as the first ti.po is committed to the GNOME cvs repository. From that point on, you can use those "ti" translation status pages alone. Once you have translated some of the pot files referenced above, you can send the resulting po files to me (or someone else with cvs access willing to commit the files) and we'll try to put them into cvs for you. Just make sure that the po files pass a test with "msgfmt -cvv ti.po" without errors or warnings, that they're encoded in UTF-8, and that you compress them using gzip before attaching them to the mail. Or you can put the files on a web page somewhere, and we can fetch them from there. Once you've contributed a few translations this way, you can apply for a cvs account of your own at http://developer.gnome.org/doc/policies/accounts/, so that you can put translations directly into cvs later on. Gossip should now be translated from HEAD
I figured that this branch change would probably warrant a quick note to you all, just in case there is any confusion. Gossip has, until now, been generating GTP status page stats from the gossip-0.8 branch. After discussions with the author, I've switched it over to HEAD (the default branch). This means that your stats for gossip might drop to 0, even if you previously had 100% complete translations for gossip. You can fix this by copying your translation file from the gossip-0.8 branch over to the HEAD branch. That does qualify as a potentially tricky CVS manoeuvre, so if anybody would like me to handle that for their translation, please just shoot me an email and let me know.
