Release notes screenshots
Hi guys, I am sure most of the teams don't have up-to-date Gnome 2.12 beta installations, so they are unable to add figures to the release notes in their own locale. If there is anyone who can do the screenshots (has both the time and ability :) for other teams, it would be very nice to announce it, and I am sure they'll get a beer for that (or soda, for anti-alcoholic folks :)! Invariant sections? GFPL
Hello all :) I'm taking my first stumbles into documentation translation, and I've started with Bug-Buddy, since I know people in my community have difficulty reporting bugs due to lack of translated material, and this will make the translated application easier to use. The POT for the bug-buddy doc. is neatly packaged on the modules page [1], and away I go... However, my first contact with the GFPL has confused me a tad. I don't understand the function of the phrase "Invariant Sections" in this part of the copyright string: __ Permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL), Version 1.1 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation with no Invariant Sections, no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts. You can find a copy of the GFDL..." __ Now, invariant sections are sections which don't change. Why would these be prohibited? Would not changing information included in the licence be more of a concern? (Also, why are these terms capitalized?) Thankyou for any help you can offer on this. They are capitalised because they are defined in GFDL, and it requires each document copyright notice to indicate if it has any invariant sections (some document might have there "with Invariant Sections 'Our Mothers' and 'Our Fathers'" if they have such two invariant sections). Just noticed the same problem that Clytie encountered. I successfully commit an update translation for gnome-volume-manager, acctually did it a dozen times but I don't see that the change on the statistics page. Last time I commited the file I checked to see if the comment would show up on cvs.gnome.org/viewcvs/ as it did very fast for some other stuff I commited eariler, but the last comment was from the last commit more than a month ago. The way to do things, IIRC, is to do a 'cvs update -r gnome-2-12'. Don't forget to back up your data in case it does anything nasty! If you ever need to switch a working directory back to HEAD, use 'cvs update -A'. Translators would probably want to keep a seperate copy of both around, up to them. I've tried this too. Tried even deleting the whole gnome-volume-manager directory and the did the checkout with -r gnome-2-12, commited the translation again but no luck. I don't think this is a string freeze breakage. The five strings in
question ("Brackets <>", "Symbol <<", "Symbol <=",
"Symbol >=", "Symbol >>") are located in the file
plugins/taglist/Latex.tags.xml.in[.h] which was last updated four weeks
ago. They also exist there since its first commit.
All of these strings contain the HTML code representation of "<" or ">".
In de.po we've got these five untranslated strings, e.g. "Brackets <>"
and also commented out, out-dated translated strings like "Brackets
<>". I guess it's maybe some error or different behavior between
various intltool versions, some converting XML entities to a valid
representation and some not?

Exactly. intltool between 0.28 and 0.30 converted those from < to <, etc., but this turned out to break a whole lot of other things (like tag nesting: eg. how do you convert back things like "symbol <" which becomes "symbol <"?) so we turned back to the old behaviour. Anything from 0.31 and up should do (we are at 0.34.1, and we don't do too many releases these days, so 0.31 is dated June 25, 2004 :). Hi All, There is a bug in the DocBook XML stylesheets for the Greek language which makes pages like http://www.gnome.org/start/2.12/notes/el/rnusers.html show the line (Caption, in this case) Ó÷Þìá 1. Attractive, friendly, simple: the new default theme. instead of Σχήμα 1. Attractive, friendly, simple: the new default theme. This is caused due to an issue with encodings in file /usr/share/xml/docbook/stylesheet/nwalsh/common/el.xml of the server that generates the Release Notes. An updated/fixed version of the file has been posted and accepted last April at http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1168778&group_id=21935&atid=373747 though it may take a bit to appear in distributions. Therefore, could you please replace /usr/share/xml/docbook/stylesheet/nwalsh/common/el.xml on the server that generates the Release Notes, to the file mentioned at http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1168778&group_id=21935&atid=373747 so that http://www.gnome.org/start/2.12/notes/el/ appears well in Greek? Maybe you can see with web, marketing or sysadmin teams about fixing this short-term for you, but I really think we should go with everything Shaun is doing inside gnome-doc-utils in the future.
