This debate comes up every now and then (check the archives) but I
currently don't see any new arguments or changes (like a signifcant
increase in manpower in the documentation team) to re-evaluate it.

Hi

I guess most translators here would prefer to use their existing PO
editors.  The Translate Toolkit has a converter that can create a POT
file from many subtitle formats:

http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/toolkit/sub2po

This is available since version 1.4.0 of the Translate Toolkit.  This
way people can use their existing editors and workflows.

How to translate the picture at l10n.gnome.org?

Hi,

When I check the help guide for empathy at
http://l10n.gnome.org/module/empathy/, I realize that the picture can be
translated. However I cannot find a link to do that, could you tell me how
those languages translate the pictures? Thanks.

In short: By creating a screenshot. There's is no text entry tool that
magically creates a picture.

In long:
Run the (translated) application, take a screenshot with your favorite
tool, if not existing yet create a "figures" subdirectory in your
language directory in the userguide directory of your git checkout, save
your localized screenshot there with the same name as the same file in
the "C" language directory in the userguide directory, run "git add",
"git commit" and "git push". :)

Thank for your replies, I think that I understand the status. The project,
http://svn.gnucash.org/repo/gnucash/trunk, is using a home-grown script to
generate the pot file. I think it needs to be modified to use intltool.

AFAIR, I already tried to generate the POT file for gnucash in the past.
I think that the problem was multiline Scheme strings that intltool
doesn't parse properly. Hence the custom script.

I don't mind using a custom script, as far as:
1. the script can be run without building the project
2. the script is in a "common" language script (bash/Python/Perl), e.g.
installed by default in a standard Linux distributions.

When you create the localized image also translate corresponding po
message (simply copy the original string). If a original image is changed
corresponding po message is changed too. You will see an untranslated (or
fuzzy) message and so you will get a notice about a original image change.

If you mean  tag in .schemas file, I think intltool works fine in my test.

Probably GETTEXT_PACKAGE would need the simple ASCII name in configure.[ac|in]

No, the problem is with Scheme (.scm), not .schemas files.

The problem is with intl-scm/xgettext.scm which dynamically generates
the intl-scm/guile-strings.c file.

Hi Sense,

If the files are in a standard subtitle format (that is supported by
translate-toolkit, as stated by Friedel) and committed in a repository
somewhere, then we can use the standard l10n.gnome.org infrastructure to
translate them.
