gnome-shell string freeze request
Hey guys, One of the "holes" in the current gnome-shell ui is a lack of a "Restart" button. There's been a plan to add one for a while along when some other design changes by putting it in the Power Off dialog. (see http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/Design/Whiteboards/SystemStopRestart ). Now the gnome-shell and gnome-session changes are staged and ready to go, see: See http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=641375 If at all possible, it would be good to get this into GNOME 3 (so probably would need to land today) since the lack of a restart button has been somewhat contentious. Unfortunately, the new design has somewhat different strings. The main differences is we now expose a Restart button (but we already had a string for it in the source) and now we use "Power Off" instead of "Shut Down" in a few strings. Can we makes these changes? --Ray ___ gnome-i18n mailing list gnome-i18n@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gnome-i18n

The wiki isn't loading for me right now, and I'm not entirely clear on the interface here. This is some sort of shutdown dialog? This seems like a substantial UI freeze break during hard code freeze. Re: gnome-shell string freeze request
Shaun, This is to add a "Restart" dialog in adition to the "Power Off" option in the upper right hand corner of GNOME Shell. This isn't all that substantial as Restart isn't there today (and should be, hence the freeze request - there has been some criticism of GNOME Shell because of the lack of a restart option). From a docs perspective, if necessary, I'll update the docs myself to get this feature added. A few control-center patches
Heya, https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645527 The first patch will port the sound panel's theme section to use GSettings instead of GConf. This piece of code was somehow forgotten in the process of porting the control-center to GSettings. https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645435 The second patch (the one that adds a new string), moves all the logging infrastructure to be shared amongst panels. I'm a bit disappointed happy with how this one was handled. Lucian posed questions still unanswered. We're in hard code freeze and we are breaking string freeze for some advantage posed by alternative wording, for the burden of all translation teams (or the disadvantage of the users where the teams can't update in time). While we are breaking the string freeze, we also missed the opportunity to add plurals to the third string above, as it seems to need. So we'll have to fuzzy this string again at some stage for translators to spend their time again on a very visible string. All the similar strings miss plural support as well: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=644090 Could this terminology change from "Shut down" to "Power off" seriously not wait? Considering that some users might now experience an incomplete translation even though their language teams worked after the freeze, is this kind of thing really worth it? First off, thanks so much for implementing this often requested feature! It'll be surely appreciated especially by smaller teams out there. How about initial comment lines in catalogs, though? When I download a random reduced catalog, I see that those lines with a list of translators, copyright info etc. seem to have been stripped. Is this on purpose? FWIW, I've spotted a similar problem in the current Transifex.net application some time ago, so this might be a heads up for those of you fellow translators who use Tx.net for localizing freedesktop.org modules etc. - beware of losing data that might be important for you or your team: http://trac.transifex.org/ticket/675 Best, Petr Kovar ___ gnome-i18n mailing list gnome-i18n@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gnome-i18n

Surely, you raise valid concerns here. Nonetheless, maybe some of these issues were of very practical nature: Lucian's message didn't include any concerned developer in the recipient list as far as I can see. It's usually advisable to double check that you're sending your message to the relevant people (and include our i18n group in CC). When we intend to talk to developers, we should probably also use desktop-devel-list etc., since it's not very likely that those who request string freeze breaks are following current threads on gnome-i18n. Not in these rush hours anyway. Thanks for filing that bug against gnome-shell, no doubt it's very unfortunate that we missed a chance to support ngettext in that case. Those of us who translate into Slavic languages know very well that it's a PITA afterwards (though there might be a solution for some languages if you try to change word order). So AFAICS those patches referenced in the bug add only one highly visible string ("Software Install"), since the other one seems to be already used ("Install selected software on the system"). OTOH, there are already 20 complete translations for gnome-packagekit, plus there have been many string freeze breaks recently, so I guess I'll let other i18n members decide if they consider this an important issue worth fixing before the stable release. String additions to 'gnome-packagekit.gnome-3-0'
This is an automatic notification from status generation scripts on: http://l10n.gnome.org. There have been following string additions to module 'gnome-packagekit.gnome-3-0': + "Software Install" Note that this doesn't directly indicate a string freeze break, but it might be worth investigating. ___ gnome-i18n mailing list gnome-i18n@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gnome-i18n

So I assume the required people saw that there were unanswered concerns, and yet approved it anyway, which is what makes me unhappy. > Thanks for filing that bug against gnome-shell, no doubt it's very > unfortunate that we missed a chance to support ngettext in that case. Again, I would have loved someone from the GTP coordination team to actually look at the patch and see that there is an issue before giving approval. Of course, I would have also liked the developers who reviewed it to realise that this string freeze break affects a string with a reported bug, but maybe that is asking too much.
