Translation of update-manager in Ubuntu: Official GNOME app?
Short question: Is the application “update-manager” (update manager for Ubuntu) an official part of GNOME? It is not currently listed on damned-lies. Should it be? Tldr: The program update-manager in Ubuntu is described in Launchpad as “update-manager: GNOME application that manages apt updates”. Is this an official part of GNOME, or does it just mean that this program is intended for use with GNOME? We're trying to clean up Norwegian Nynorsk translations for the next Ubuntu release, and want to synchronize Ubuntu translations with upstream projects. It seems Upstream for Update-manager is a separate project in Launchpad, and not hosted on GNOME servers: https://launchpad.net/update-manager update-manager is not currently mentioned in damned-lies. OK, took a look a the strings and those look good. However, the
translator comment that backed
g_option_context_set_summary (context, _("Package Name Installer"));
and
g_option_context_set_summary (context, _("Package File Installer"));
are no longer at the (first) position of these strings. In general this
strings don't really sound like a good summary to me. But I would at
least like to have the comments

*/
and
/* TRANSLATORS: program name: application to install a package to
provide a file */
back and updated. The new string "Software install" hardly needs a
comment while it has two different at the moment.
If you fix that, 1 of 2 from i18n.

Be sure that the i18n team knows that GNOME 3.0 will not be a shiny example of how releases and freezes should work and we really approved many (all?) freeze break requests coming from gnome-shell and other core modules. We really don't try to make everybody live more difficult than it already is. But I would still kindly ask everybody to follow the rules we have set for years now and that have proven to be extremely useful. Nobody has even mentioned that commit to be reverted as it is in for some time now anyway and most likely translated anyway by some teams already. But by asking you would have received valuable information that would have been easy to integrate in the commit. Touching it now to add comments (which will still hopefully happen after the release) is additional work for everybody. I hope you see my point and I am totally aware that some people are working day & night to get GNOME3 out. However this release cycle is quite exceptional, and everybody is working on his and her limits. And while 100% translation coverage certainly looks nice, the User Experience will be less "decreased" by an untranslated schema string or English names for background pictures than by the technical or design issues that don't get solved before the release, even if admittedly attempting to solve them quite late. string freeze break request for gnome-menus
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645061 discusses the need to show 'Administration tools' in the menus in fallback mode somewhere. The patch to address this will add a new Settings-System.directory file containing the translated name 'Administration' for the new submenu.
