GNOME 41 release notes ready to be translated

2021-09-10 Thread Allan Day
Hi everyone,

The text of the GNOME 41 release notes is complete, so it is now safe
to translate them. It can be found in the gnome-41 branch of the
release-notes module:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/Engagement/release-notes/ .

Note that GNOME 41 is scheduled for release on 22 September.

I hope that's OK; just let me know if there's anything else you need!

3.28 release notes available to translate

2018-03-01 Thread Allan Day
Hi everyone,

I've finished writing the text of the release notes, so now's a good
time to start translating them! The release is scheduled for March
14th.

The notes can be found in the gnome-3-28 branch of the release-notes repository.

The images still have to be added, but hopefully that will happen soon.

Many thanks,

GNOME 3.26 release notes available for translation

2017-09-06 Thread Allan Day
Hi everyone,

I've just finished the GNOME 3.26 release notes, so they can now be
safely translated. Screenshots are still missing, but that will be
fixed in the next couple of days. I will send another update once this
has happened.

The notes can be found here:
https://git.gnome.org/browse/release-notes/log/?h=gnome-3-26

Note that I left the .po files in place from last release (3.24).

3.26 is scheduled for release on 13 September - just under a week from
now. I'm really sorry that we are not giving you more time to
translate them. It's been a challenging release which caused some
delays; I'll do my best to make sure that the notes are finished
earlier in the future.

GNOME 3.22: languages with nearly 80% coverage

2016-08-31 Thread Allan Day
Hi all,

The language stats for GNOME 3.22 show the following languages with a
little under 80% coverage:

Dutch (79%)
Vietnamese (76%)
Telugu (74%)
Punjabi (74%)

With three weeks left until the 3.22, it would be great if these could be
pushed over 80% so we can list them in the release notes!

We usually change the statistics at the last minute - which is why a

We do the same for supported languages, by commenting out unsupported

Re: 3.14 Release Notes

2014-09-18 Thread Allan Day
Hi all,

I'm afraid I did a stupid thing. I just realised that I deleted one of
the 3.14 features while restructuring the pages [1]. If possible I'd
like to reintroduce the section, which looks like this:

Added Useful in Boxes
&gnomeversion; is a big release for Boxes, the GNOME
application for virtual and remote machines. This version introduces
snapshots, which allows you to save a virtual machine at a particular
moment in time and return to it later. This is particularly useful for
returning to a known working state.

Automatic downloading is another useful feature in &gnomeversion;:
just give Boxes the address to an install image, and it
will automatically download and install it for you. This version of
Boxes also includes many other smaller improvements, such
as the ability to run multiple boxes in their own separate windows,
express installation for Debian, user interface improvements, and new
keyboard shortcuts.

Would that be OK?

Allan

Human Interface Guidelines

2014-09-17 Thread Allan Day
Hi all,

As some of you might have noticed, the GNOME Human Interface
Guidelines have had an extensive rewrite recently. (The new version
will be published along with GNOME 3.14.)

If it's OK with everyone here, I'm advising that translators don't try
and translate the new version yet. The new version is still a bit
unstable, and I want to be able to respond to feedback when the new
version is published.

I will notify this list again early next cycle, by which point I hope
that the HIG will be in a good state for translators to get to work.

Yes that's a real shame. I copied over the list from last release
(should have checked that)... I've made a note to fix this for next
cycle. In the mean time I'm not sure what to do. I've left Slovak out
of the list for fear of breaking translations at this late stage. If
people think it's OK to add it, I will.

3.12 Release Notes Available to Translate

2014-03-18 Thread Allan Day
Hi everyone!

The text for the 3.12 release notes has now been finalised, so it can
now be translated. Unfortunately, the screenshots are not complete,
but that will happen in the next day or two. The release itself is
scheduled for 26 March.

The notes can be found in the 3.12 branch of the release-notes module:

https://git.gnome.org/browse/release-notes/?h=gnome-3-12

Let me know if you have any questions.

Freeze break request for bug 694796

2013-02-28 Thread Allan Day
Hi all,

We've introduced new iBus character popups this cycle - these are the
menus that let you choose different characters when using an input
method. We got some early feedback that we'd like to address with
these, basically by changing how the popups are themed. This is
tracked in bug 694796 [1].

The change would be entirely visual and won't functionally affect how
the feature is used.

Help with collecting keyboard data

2013-01-04 Thread Allan Day
Hi everyone,

GNOME uses a database that maps keyboard layouts to countries and
languages. This is used to try and guess which layouts will be
interesting to users depending on their country and language.

Unfortunately, this database has a lot of gaps. To try and fix this,
we are trying to collect information about which keyboard layouts
people use, so we have a more complete database. This will hopefully
let us make better guesses about keyboard layouts.

It would be great if translation contributors could help us out with
this. It's very simple: just check out the instructions on the
keyboard data wiki page [1] and fill in the table with any information
you might have about which layouts are used.

This wiki page is still quite new, so just let me know if you have any
problems or are unsure about anything.

Thanks in advance for you help!

Release Notes - Updated High Contrast Image

Hi all,

I just pushed an amended version of the high contrast image to the 3.4
release notes (named rna11y-high-contrast.png). There's no text in it
and the subject of the image hasn't changed, so it won't affect
translations.

This is just a heads up since the image's sha256/md5 will have

These changes hit the 3.2 branch yesterday.

There was a string change to the mockup that I posted: 'On AC power'
became 'When plugged in'. The 'Never' combobox entry was also changed
to 'Don't suspend', although that wasn't specified in the design I
circulated.

I hope that's OK.

Just to be clear, the request is just to change one set of controls -
it is to remove two check boxes and to rearrange two comboboxes. The
critical power option will be unaffected, as will the status part of
the panel (the bit that tells you about battery charge, etc).

Ensuring consistent use of 'suspend' is one goal here, although the UI
changes are not dependent on that change.

Again, this isn't essential to the UI break.

The system information panel uses the term 'Device'. I try to avoid
referring to the machine itself in my UI design work.

> And how are tablets not computers?

I can certainly imagine some tablets being thought of as mobile
devices in the same vein as mobile phones. I see the word 'computer'
as becoming less relevant in general; it doesn't seem to tally with
machines that are always on, mobile and cloud enabled. That's a
discussion for another time though, I suspect. ;)

Power settings ui freeze break request

2011-09-01 Thread Allan Day
Hi all,

The current power panel settings have a few usability issues that it
would be great to have fixed for 3.2. I have recently been working on
a new design for these that could be implemented in the next couple of
days (ie. before the string freeze). The relevant bug:

The new design has been reviewed by several members of the design
team. I've checked the user documentation and, from what I can tell,
these changes will not have much impact there.
