their name already indicates, not to be modified further. Please stop

 Regards,
 Christian

Dear Christian,
even though Your text above is rather arrogant, I assume that You
had the best of intentions.
Generally speaking, it is always irritating when one group starts to
violate a set of common rules, when the consequence is that some other
group must pay for it.
Therefore I would like to stress the necessity to get a consensus when
changing the common rules, before the change is enforced.

One common rule that translators and Team Coordinators must adhere to
is, that they must add an entry to the ChangeLog before committing
a translation update to the version system.
According to Gnome rules, this is without exception.

So, if the rules need to be changed, a proposal should be put forward
and it might be accepted. A unilateral decision to change the rules
will simply not do.

Let me remind You, of the set of common rules about ChangeLog:
http://live.gnome.org/TranslationProject/SvnHowTo
#BEGIN#
With a non-anonymous GNOME SVN (Subversion) account you have full access
to the master GNOME code repository, and with that comes responsibility.
Don't change ANYTHING in any module unless you are absolutely sure you
are allowed to do so. When in doubt, always ask the maintainers of the
module. Information about the maintainers of the module is usually in a
file called MAINTAINERS in the module, and there's sometimes also a file
called HACKING that contains useful information.

As a translator, you will mostly be dealing with the po directories of
the modules. You of course are allowed to add or update a xy.po without
asking for permission, but here are a couple of things you should
remember to do before any xy.po commit:

  * Make sure the file is encoded in UTF-8 (for GNOME2/GTK2
software)
  * Make sure the file passes the msgfmt -cv xy.po test
  * Add an entry at the top of the ?ChangeLog file in the po
directory

Look at the other entries in the ?ChangeLog for how the format looks
like. Remember to use UTF-8 in ?ChangeLog files (that's the only way
everyone can have their names spelled correctly), and use double spaces
and tabs at the correct places. This is the usual format:

#END

Also a perl script that some people use to manipulate ChangeLog
was written by some of the developers that are
complaining about translators acting according to the rules.

Let me remind You, of the set of common rules about ChangeLog:

#BEGIN#
http://svn.gnome.org/svn/releng/trunk/tools/prepare-ChangeLog.pl
#!/usr/bin/perl -w
# vim: ft=perl
# -*- Mode: perl; indent-tabs-mode: nil; c-basic-offset: 2 -*-

# Perl script to create a ChangeLog entry with names of files
# and functions from a cvs diff.
#
# Darin Adler da...@eazel.com, started 20 April 2000
# Java support added by Maciej Stachowiak m...@eazel.com
# Multiple ChangeLog support added by Laszlo (Laca) Peter l...@sun.com
# Fernando Herrera added Subversion support
# Sven Herzberg added Git support
# Behdad Esfahbod improved the file format
# last updated 13 February 2007
#
# (Someone put a license in here, like maybe GPL.)
#
# TODO:
# Command line parameter for reviewed-by lines
# Provide option to put new ChangeLog into a separate file
# instead of editing the ChangeLog.
# For new files, just say New file instead of listing
# function names.
[CUT]
#END#

Generally, I would say that there is some space for improvement.

 Vincent

The responses from the developers indicate quite clearly that they
are not satisfied with the methods of string freeze.
Presently a number of developers, are deliberately breaking the
string freeze and thereby creating trouble for translators.
The argument seems to be: We break string freeze because we can.
Both developers and translators are working on volunteer basis,
doing their best.

To stop this from developing into a conflict, I suggest the
following changes in the development process:

* The development in trunk branches very early into releases,
giving developers more time to fix bugs in a release.
During this time, the developers focus on the branch.

* After an early branch, a string freeze is imposed on the
trunk, giving translators time to translate the trunk.

* We introduce release po files that are essentially
the strings in a release but not in the trunk it
branched from. This would make the work of the translator
much easier.

* When string freeze is released off the trunk, new strings
and translations can be merged back from the release(es)
to the trunk.

So essentially this describes two ideas: release-po files, and
separating the work area of developers and translators.

It goes without saying that the string freeze would have to
be 100% effective, with no possibility to break it.

What do you think?

Yes, it is probably best to wait and see what happens this cycle.
If the number of freeze breaks is low, then there probably is no
problem at all. From my personal point of view, it is acceptable to
have a string freeze break below 1 percent (or one string) per each
translation file. Anything at that level would not bother me much.

Your argument seems to be that the source of those files

the untranslated .po file.
The work of the translators are completely independent of
the source.
Also copyright owners may change their minds and change
license and or terms. Thus translators that were translating
free software may find that their work is being used in
non-free software as well.
Because of this, I would like to explicitly specify GPL as
the license of the .po files I translate.
If other translators would like to translate the same software
under a different license, they are free to do that, because
the .pot file and the .po files are just a template to be
filled out with translations of sentences into a
particular language. Copyright would only hold for the work
as a whole, and as long as there is a difference in the
in the translation as a whole, they would have to be considered
as two separate works, with the similarity beign the template

This is my personal view on this.

Launchpad licensing issues

2008-07-03 Thread Anna Jonna Armannsdottir
Today, when I logged into Launchpad, the interface
gave me an ultimatum, either convert all licenses of
my translations to BSD license, or else all my translations
will be removed from Launchpad.

I think this will upset the way the icelandic translation team
is working. When building up a team, this is the way to
take it down.

As a translator I always license my translations under the
same license as the software itself. Anything else, is
nonsense in my opinion.

For me personally, this means that I will not be seeing my
translations on my Ubuntu workstation.

This is also an opportunity to put up a webpage, that gives
the same kind of cooperation as Launchpad.

AFAIK the BSD-License was chosen exactly to permit this. You can
 easily
relicense BSD-licensed code (translations as well) to (L)GPL. They
 chose
the BSD-License to be able to deal with upstreaming of translations
(read: pushing launchpad translations into the upstream projects).

I only have translated GPL-ed software, so of course the license
of my translations is GPL. The GPL license has ample permissions
to allow anyone to distribute and change my translations, pushing
it into the upstream projects, or using it in other GPL projects.

I can not yet see any valid reason for having my efforts for Free
Software invalidated, so I respectfully disagree with this.

Feel free to import into gnome-svn and set up a pootle server for your
 project.

A more elegant solution would be to separate non-compatible licenses,
so that one server would deal with GPL'ed translations, and GPL
compatible licenses. Another server would deal with BSD and BSD
compatible licenses and so on for the number of license types there
are.

That solution would be completely acceptable to me, but not this.

In fact I think that this violates the GPL V 2.0 sections 1 and 4.

Anyway I can not understand how Ubuntu would be able to distribute
a GPL'ed source legally if parts of the translations are removed.

And yes in this situation a pootle server is highly desirable for all
Gnome GPL'ed projects, and even all GPL'ed projects. That just might
give the synergy, to outperform launchpad.

This means that the number of plural forms
is two in the corresponding language, and
that plural forms are used in the file.

The files I am sending to Ubuntu Launchpad
contain the following:
Plural-Forms: nplurals=2; plural=n != 1;\n

Does anybody have a clue about: =n != 1

Which one is the right one for gnome-i18n?

Re: po files header, Plural-Forms

I'm pretty sure that plural=n != 1 means that it should use the
plural string for any numbers different from 1, and I think it should
be that in GNOME as well. It makes a little more sence if you put a
parantheses around it plural=(n!=1). The != is a programming way of
 wiriting not equals.
 Regards Kenneth

Hi Kenneth,
that makes sense. It took a bit of reading to understand that
'plural' is really a C function. I thougnt it was just a constant
like anything else in that file.

At the same time we have translations like this (en_GB):
msgid %d × %d pixel
msgid_plural %d × %d pixels
msgstr[0] %d × %d pixel
msgstr[1] %d × %d pixels

And the function f = plural(n) = (n!=1) has the two values:
n=0= f(n) = 1 # 0 pixels
n=1= f(n) = 0 # 1 pixel
n=2...inf  = f(n) = 1 # 2 pixels

Ahh, so the f(n) is the index to msgstr. Ok, now i understand it.
I suppose there are some other translators that do not understand this.
I think the key to understanding this, is to realize that plural
is really a C function of n which is the numerical argument that
controls the textual context.
Also I had to know that the function plural is really the index
to the msgstr[0], msgstr[1] array.
Hope this helps understanding the plural function.
Thanks for your explanations.

Of course these files don't need to be complete. They do not even need

Hi Sven,
I am the new coordinator for the icelandic team, and it will take some
time until I get a svn account. Until then I will have to do it this
way.
The files you mention are already in preparation, but not completely

is.po svn repo add to gimp tips trunk

2008-04-29 Thread Anna Jonna Armannsdottir
Please help me get this translation into the
repo, since I do not have an account.

Here is the first translation of GIMP tips to the
icelandic language.
The translation is to be added to the repository,
since it did not exist before. The file is named
tips_gimp-HEAD-tips-is.po and should be saved in
the svn sandbox at: gimp/po-tips/is.po .
Enclosed is also a suggested ChangeLog entry.

The file is of course error checked, but has
not been checked against a running application.

is.po svn repo add to gimp-2-4 tips

2008-04-29 Thread Anna Jonna Armannsdottir
Please help me get this translation into the
repo, since I do not have an account.

This is a translation of the timp tips
of the gimp-2-4 branch.

The translation is to be added to the repository,
since it did not exist before. The file is named
po-tips-gimp-2-4-is.po and should be saved in
the svn sandbox at: gimp-2-4/po-tips/is.po .
Enclosed is also a suggested ChangeLog entry.

The file is of course error checked, but has
not been checked against a running application.

Hi Claude and thanks for your answers.
Now I would like to ask you to give the present
icelandic translation team a bit more time to react.

I just found out that he is an active contributor
to the translation of Gnome in Ubuntu, but still
registered with the unusable email address.

So I looked him up in the icelandic telephone
directory, and called him. That succeded.

He aggreed to my suggestion that i would become
the new coordinator. I hope that he will be able
to contact you and then somehow announce a new team.

I am sure that we would all feel better if we
do the transition that way.

Don't leave it ages to get stuff on the branch. We fell for this.
However long it takes to check out the branch and update your
translation, and however painful it is, if you intend to do both HEAD
and branch, apply the changes to both. If you don't, you will meet a
day when you spend hours and hours and hours doing nothing but feeding
stuff back onto the branch.

I presume that a translator can only concentrate on one .po file, at
a time. If that is correct, then the translator must choose between
   branches and trunk/head.
Is it a better choice to always stick tho the trunk, and then update
   the branches later.
Or is it better to update one branch or several branches, and then
   updating the trunk/head?

If you're just starting your translation work, my advise would be to
concentrate on trunk/head, and only update branches with your work
from trunk/head if you have the time for it.

What's in trunk/head will live on, whereas branches are by definition
a dead end, so precious time/resources is better spent on trunk/head.

Later, when you aim for completeness, the branches of course also have
to be updated, especially as almost all current GNOME releases are
made off gnome-2.xx branches. But that may not be what you want to
concentrate on right now. If you want completeness in a future GNOME
release, what you do in head/trunk right now is what matters.

Yes that is what i expected.
Now I understand the advice above, as an encouragement to update the
closest branch as soon as possible, after the trunk has been updated,
because usually the trunk and the closest branch are most similar,
when the branch has just sprouted from the trunk. If you let a lot of
time pass without updating the branch, there will come a day when you
spend hours and hours and hours doing nothing but feeding stuff back
onto the branch.

Once I was translating a branch of Evolution an then feeding that to
the trunk. The trunk was a few releases ahead of the branch I was
traslating and I found myself in a rather difficult situation trying
to synchronize the trunk and an old branch. Can't recommend that
to anyone, but it gave me a precious experience of how not to do
things.
