Inactive Translation Team
Hello I have recently been translating parts of GNOME into Welsh[0] (cy) on the Damned Lies interface. I have so far translated 8 GNOME projects, 7 of those being Welsh[1]. I have done some analysis on all of the git repositories under the Desktop category with the results on a Google Docs spreadsheet[2]. In the past 2 years there have been 13 po/cy.po files edited. In the past year just 3 po/cy.po files were changed and since the beginning of 2010 there have been no changes to the Desktop category. A surprising 45 out of 105 (43%) of all of the Desktop category repositories have no po/cy.po file. I've already emailed Dafydd Harries (Cc'd in this email), the current coordinator on August 5th, a copy of that email can be found attached. The contents of the email is in Welsh however roughly translated I've asked whether or not he's interested on working in GNOME as I need to have confirmation to have somebody with git access to be able to upload to the git repo in order to one day have git access myself. I would like to be able to commit my own translations to GNOME however I cannot get a response from the coordinator to be able to request a friend of mine (on the en_GB team) to be able to upload a few po files for me. I'm unsure of what steps to take next and any advice would be appreciated. With kind regards, Christopher Swift. Iestyn Price got a git account (with Daf's support) and I dusted mine off, and I suspect Rhys Jones may still have his. I emailed a bunch of interested people and Iestyn tried to kick-start the gnome...@gnome.org mailing list and then...well, nothing much happened. So there are at least two of us and possibly three with git accounts. And there is (or was) a lot of interest in contributing. I didn't realise that so many of us had git accounts, I thought that at maximum there would've been one from what I had seen however this is good news to me. Now that I can see that lots of people are actually interested it's just a matter of organising and getting work done. I know Rhys has been very busy this year. I presume the same is true of Iestyn. I am also in the very busy camp; and further, I still do not understand how to use git and being pointed to out-of-date wiki pages doesn't help. I go through periods of absolutely nothing to do to being completely overworked so I can sympathise with the rest of you. I have a rough idea of how to work git and I could talk you through it one day on IRC if you wish. I am happy to wade through long .po files; I am happy to feed things through Cysill (the spelling and grammar checker for Welsh); As I understand it, Cysill was developed by Bangor University's Canolfan Bedwyr. Were you able to obtain a copy of this for less than £50 or do you know if it is possible to get discounts for volunteer groups such as GNOME Cymreag? I would like to take up your offer however to run some .po files through Cysill from time to time. I am happy to start filing what does this _mean_? bugs again; I am happy to compare terminology between different programs. Thanks very much for the offer. For those on the list who haven't heard of it there's an online tool which compares translations between different projects including GNOME KDE. For Welsh it is possible to use this url http://en.cy.open-tran.eu/ . I am willing to glance at what other people do, and I am very happy to have everything I do corrected. (Okay, not happy, but...) But whenever I get a free hour, I find myself wasting it trying to check out a git tree, and that's not what I need or want to be doing. As we discussed earlier on IRC, it is a requirement for our work to be proof-read, so this should ideally be added to a set of rules that the GNOME-cy team has. I am, however, very keen that the translation doesn't deteriorate further. So I do encourage anyone interested in sorting the Welsh translation out who is currently lurking quietly to go and join gnome...@gnome.org. Then perhaps we can get this back on the road. Thankfully already subscribed and I'm hoping to pick up the traffic there in the immediate future! Telsa (still here, just quieter!) If you look at the wiki[0] articles[1] on the topic you will see that Microsoft has opted for the term Recycle Bin in English (GB unsure about US) in order to avoid the unfamiliarity of terms, also a direct translation of Recycle Bin has been used in the cy_GB (Cymraeg) translation Bin Ailgylchu. When referring to trash itself I believe it best to use the term rubbish and when referring to the folder or bin of rubbish it should be a Rubbish Bin similar to the Ubuntu en_GB guildeines[2].
