Hey all, It turns out that these were accidently removed from gnome-control-center right before the 2.24 release (whoops). I've just finished bringing them back and hooking them up to build again in trunk. Unfortunately when people updated their translations, the strings from these binaries were dropped. I'm currently attempting to write a script to recover the translatable strings from the SVN diffs. I spoke with Rodrigo, who originally committed the change to delete it. We agreed that dropping the fontilus and themus vfs methods made sense, since they no longer work, but the font viewer and thumbnailer (whch were in the same dir) really should have stayed, since they have no replacement. (GNOME Specimen could be a replacement, but it currently lacks the functionality, and is not part of Desktop). So the plan was to bring back the viewer and the thumbnailer for at least 2.24 and then look at addressing the problem properly. Hey All, This email has reminded me: can someone from the i18n teams please take care of updating the i18n section of the release notes? Murray also suggested that a placeholder paragraph be inserted for translators to be able to insert a translation credit. Does someone know how to do this? I think I'm mostly done with the text (although I might add a section or too). If you want to make a start on the translations, it should be ok. Ok guys and gals. I am announcing a preliminary draft of the release notes for 2.14. We now require proof readers for spelling, grammar and technical correctness. The latest committed version is online at: http://www.gnome.org/start/2.14/notes/C/index.html You can also check out the release notes from CVS: http://cvs.gnome.org/viewcvs/gnomeweb-wml/www.gnome.org/start/2.14/notes/docbook/C/ We are using gnome-doc-utils for translation. I hope the translators know how to get all of that working, because I have no idea. Warning, I AM AN AUSTRALIAN, SPELLINGS MAY BE CONSIDERED INCORRECT. My grammar is also pretty appalling. Please send through corrections for these. Feel free to correct minor spelling mistakes yourself. Discussion should happen on list as appropriate or on the IRC channel #release-notes on irc.gnome.org. Addendum: - If anyone knows the status of the LiveCD, that section requires updating. - Danilo was meant to be providing the i18n stats page, he said he added it, but I can't see where. - Does anyone want to take charge on writing a press release? I am hoping to have them in a state ready for translations by lunchtime tomorrow (GMT). In the About dialog, there are now two additional strings. They indicate whether you're using the HAL backend or the Legacy backend. documentation translation
Translators, Can you please make sure that you're adding your gnome-doc-utils generated translations into the right directory. If the directory is called help/, please don't create a docs/XX/. It's possible that this was done by a translation tool, rather than intentionally. Please check it out before committing. Also, check that your translation is added to DOC_LINGUAS, else it simply won't get built :( Keep up the great work! --davyd PS. Not only should translators have been informed; you should also have requested advance approval for breaking the freeze (see http://developer.gnome.org/dotplan/tasks.html#ApprovingFreezeBreaks). GNOME 2.10 is in string freeze, and will forever continue to be so. Nothing has changed in that respect. Those do indeed fix important bugs and can be classified as essential. Without wanting to tell the translators how to do their job. I don't see how having the string marked for translation is necessarily a bad thing. The string is not likely to ever be user visible, but if translators want they can translate it. Hence, the only thing it will affect is people's 100% ratings. Without being in on the culture, is this an issue?
