[Bug 797421] Remove translations ("Icon[LL]=" ) for .desktop files from all GNOME software

--- Comment #1 from Piotr Drąg  ---
This is a bug in gettext — https://savannah.gnu.org/support/?108887

The issue started showing up in GNOME as we started porting from intltool to
gettext. The comment is obviously a stop-gap solution that only slightly
alleviated the pain, but we can’t do much more until gettext upstream fixes it,
releases a new version, and that version gets propagated to major distros.

I try to fix broken “translations” before every GNOME release, but I don’t
always have time, and I might miss some. I’m closing your report, as it’s not
actionable from our side, but I do appreciate your concern.

[Bug 797421] New: Remove translations ("Icon[LL]=" ) for .desktop files from all GNOME software

2019-02-07 Thread l10n
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=797421

Bug ID: 797421
   Summary: Remove translations ("Icon[LL]=" ) for .desktop files
from all GNOME software
Classification: Infrastructure
   Product: l10n
   Version: git master
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: other
  Assignee: gnome-i18n@gnome.org
  Reporter: scootergri...@gmail.com
QA Contact: ment...@menthos.com
 GNOME version: ---

For some GNOME software i see in the .desktop files in /usr/share/applications/
that some files have translations for "Icon=" which should not be translated so
the comment in both the .desktop file and the pot/po says:

Translators: Do NOT translate or transliterate this text (this is an icon
file name)!

One example from Tails where "network-workgroup" have been translated to
something else despite the comment (its properly an old version so it might be
fixed alreay but just as example):

# Translators: Do NOT translate or transliterate this text (this is an icon
file name)!
Icon[ar]=network-workgroup
Icon[cs]=network-workgroup
Icon[da]=network-workgroup
Icon[de]=network-workgroup
Icon[el]=network-workgroup
Icon[en_GB]=network-workgroup
Icon[es]=network-workgroup
Icon[eu]=sareko lantadea
Icon[fa]=network-workgroup
Icon[fi]=network-workgroup
Icon[fr]=network-workgroup
Icon[fur]=network-workgroup
Icon[gd]=network-workgroup
Icon[gl]=network-workgroup
Icon[he]=network-workgroup
Icon[hr]=mreža-radnagrupa
Icon[hu]=network-workgroup
Icon[id]=network-workgroup
Icon[it]=network-workgroup
Icon[kk]=network-workgroup
Icon[ko]=network-workgroup
Icon[lt]=network-workgroup
Icon[lv]=network-workgroup
Icon[nl]=network-workgroup
Icon[pa]=network-workgroup
Icon[pl]=network-workgroup
Icon[pt]=Grupo de Trabalho na Rede
Icon[pt_BR]=network-workgroup
Icon[ru]=network-workgroup
Icon[sk]=network-workgroup
Icon[sl]=network-workgroup
Icon[sr]=мрежна-раднагрупа
Icon[sr@latin]=mrežna-radnagrupa
Icon[sv]=network-workgroup
Icon[tr]=network-workgroup
Icon[uk]=network-workgroup
Icon[uz@cyrillic]=network-workgroup
Icon[vi]=network-workgroup
Icon[zh_CN]=network-workgroup
Icon[zh_TW]=network-workgroup
Icon=network-workgroup

Here is a pot file as example:
https://l10n.gnome.org/POT/nautilus.master/nautilus.master.pot

With:

#. Translators: Do NOT translate or transliterate this text (this is an
icon file name)!
#: data/nautilus-autorun-software.desktop.in:7
msgid "application-x-executable"
msgstr ""

If the string should never be translated i suggest not having them available
for translation in the pot/po file so translators cant make the mistake of
changing the string.

Also there is no need for the comment about not translating the icon string in
the .desktop file so i suggest removing it.

Dont know if this is some old stuff that might/might not have been fixed in all
the GNOME software but i at least see it in the pot file still so its not fully
fixed yet.

Also it seems if i look in the source code example:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/blob/master/data/org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop.in.in

I cant see the translations so hard for me to know if "Icon=" is being
translated. Are there any smart way to check this for all GNOME software in the
latest code?

panels: Fix truncated panel names for larger fonts

Note that this fix will not automatically fix translations, which will
need to add soft-hyphens (U+00AD) to their translations themselves, and
will not fix larger fonts for which the split up syllables end up
being bigger than the maximum text width.

It's the best we can do without redesigning the Settings shell, which is
already something planned.

exists for gnome-control-center and glib. The same translation as shown in [1]
missing is what is causing this bug.

Ok, I meant it well and was a bit too fussy ;-)
I think the Catalan and Belarussian language teams should clarify the proper
language codes among themselves and correct the wrong files accordingly. This
is clearly beyond my possibilities.
Here is the link to the last patch that found agreement on the GNOME-I18N

Yes, sorry, msgfmt.

I'm sitting here totally perplexed... I re-inserted the string to recreate the
error and uploaded it and it went through. I then did 2 more to triple-check
and they went through too.

As regards the %2$d, that's what was suggested to me on the GIMP list.

I guess I can close this now... really sorry. It failed dozens of times before.

Did you mean msgfmt instead of msgft?
And what is the full and exact msgfmt error?
Can you reproduce locally?

I wonder if the number is per-format (as you use %2$d though there is only one
%d anyway in that string).

This might welcome documenting in

Because it's a trade-off (lots of mostly unneeded work for developers that

A good brainstorming is happing here and I would like to share my experience of
working with open source localization field (more than 8 years) and some ways
and means we adopted to deal with this problem.

Context (co-text + rel-text + chron-text + bi-text + non-text) is crucial while
translating. So we should treat this bug as an important one and do whatever is
possible to help translators and finally the language desktop users.

To deal with the issue, FUEL project [1] prepared a list of Frequently Used
Entries for Localization called FUEL desktop list [2] with context from major
user applications. To some extent it solved our problems of context while
dealing with the problem of standardization and inconsistency.

Just now a similar interesting discussion like this bug appeared on FUEL
project's mailing list [3]. Peter Mráz is very right in citing deckard
instance as it can be very much helpful in understanding the context. The
visual comparison and its method is documented under FUEL [4] and released in
Aug '12 to help the localizers and the persons associated with its QA.

I want to reiterate Pavol concern that without context translation can generate
critical errors and it is very much difficult and time consuming to remove
errors which are generated due to unavailability of Context info.

in many languages translation of short words is context related. We realy need
to know if it is verb, noun or adjective. If it is in caption or if it is on
button.
Many words can have more genders which is also context related.

This site http://deckard.malizor.org/ is very very usefull, but provide only
strings from glade files. Strings should be translated direct on this site to
displayed windows and automaticaly save to po file.

But problem is words that is in code. Developers often provide string like "%s"
or ":" to translation without any comment. Developers also often provide
translation comment and other developers insert code and comment dissaper from
po file.

We need some aplication like accercisser for developer, which alert developers
for this problems.

Yes, to be honest, I spent my time on other things, I like to give back (but I
have no interest in Gnome itself, mainly do because of ubuntu).

Therefore I am pro-awareness on developers side.

Coordinator of our team raised other question about committing po files
directly from DL, so we do not have to clone branch.

Since brainstorming is occurring here What about using GNOME Goals[1] as
the vehicle by which to bring about awareness? Perhaps:

1. One annoyance per release (identified by your team)
2. Make the module developers do it (as opposed to y'all doing it for us)
3. Your team reviews the fixes

This is not completely unlike what was done with the "remove markup from
translatable messages" Goal[2]. But if memory serves me, that goal (and others
like it) are sometimes seen as a way to get new people contributing and/or
existing contributors contributing in a new area. I don't think that's what you
want here. I think what you want and need is awareness building and education
of module maintainers. And that means making the module maintainers do the
work.

My point was, from an experience, many cases where is string used multiple
times, we have to report a bug to add a context, just check my profile to see
that the most of the bugs are translation/context related.

Reading a source file to figure out meaning and reporting bugs should not be
required from l10n people.

It really slows things down. Also some sentences are split into pieces and then
put back together, and it really does not make sense.

I just see a problem in this model. Traffic will be really in high, and people
watching this list will lost interest soon, and it won't be useful.

For example, there is a commit-list which, if I'm not wrong, receives an email
with each commit done in git. Is somebody tracking down that list step by step
or its just used as a history?

Maybe just defining some guidelines would be enough to "teach" developers how
to deal with strings.

As everyone is saying its own solution/proposal...

Why not make damned-lies send a mail to a certain mailing list (probably
gnome-i18n is not the best, to not clutter it) when a string is added to a
module? Just like we have for string freeze but the whole time.

This way will be easier to report early on the cycle problems with strings. The
sooner we are able to say that a string is confusing, the easier it will be for
the developer that added the string to add some context, explanation, etc.

And if we keep that on a regular basis it will be the best way to make
developers be aware of it.

In a lot of modules, the same string is used several times with the same
context/meaning, so no need to add comments or context to it.

Also, if there is a duplicated string in the source code, PO file shows it just
once, unless they have different case or context. Is there a real need to add
context to every string duplicated in a module? I belive this cases are already
documented, but if you think there is a string that should be splitted in two,
with different context each one, file a bug in that module to ask for it.

[Bug 695553] add translation context to all strings with multiple occurrence

I raised that issue on ML, it is open discussion.
I do not think it will clutter up a source code, it is usually just few
characters.

Yes, but it is really hard to detect that a subset from a set of all possible
languages and occurrences. Therefore, there is no developer capable of doing
this, as the set is huge in size.

I don't agree with that suggestion. No need to un-necessarily clutter up all
code with lots of context. There are plenty of strings that are re-used that
never form a problem, because they are specific enough to never form the basis
for problems for translators.

In my mind (and I am a translator myself), what we need to do is to raise the
developers awareness of this problem and "train" them to think critically about
the string they make and whether these string could form a problem.

Yes, my point was that developers should not use same string twice without
adding context. I will write to desktop-devel-list ML then.

I have encountered this issue many many times, and reported bugs for it, to be
honest, it is really annoying, also some not self explanatory strings are hard
to get, so we have to dig into code and I suppose you should not require
translators to do so (just extra barrier for newcomers).

Thanks folks

This bug report is way too vague to be useful. If this is meant as a pledge for
developers to do it in a general manner, this is not the place (rather try
desktop-devel-list for instance). If this concerns a real case you encountered,
please be more specific (and eventually open a bug report against the relevant
product).

That is exactly what I meant by "all but one". As that TK is open as it's own

At this point in time, isn't this effectively a duplicate of #553152 ?

The question regarding them is: Are there any way of clarifying the
"*_with_operation" strings, changing it to other words or these messages are
not intended to the end users?

In hope to building a better GNOME for everyone.

Thanks for the attention.

Incorrect translation
Application: gdm

Incorrect text:
This is a general error in the language selection in gdm. Currently, the
choice of languages is dependent on the current language chosen for gdm. For
instance, I have a PC setup to allow for both Spanish and English. If gdm is
in English mode, the selections are listed as Spanish and English, with all
country options listed in English. If its in Spanish mode, choices are
presented as Spanish, Espanol, English, and Ingles (sorry about any missing
accent marks, and yes, gdm lists all four options when in Spanish mode). But
this should not be -- the list should not be dependent on the language mode gdm
is currently stuck in.

Furthermore, after choosing a language, it asks a question to confirm whether
the user wants to use this mode for this session only or to make it the
default. But this message is in the current gdm language, not the one just
chosen. So, if gdm was currently in Spanish, and the user chose English, the
message comes up in Spanish. If gdm was in English mode, whether the user
chooses an English or Spanish selection, the message appears in English.

Should be:
Real world example: here in the USA, we have ATM and Point of Sale credit card
machines that have the ability to present messages in English, Spanish, and
sometimes other languages. But if its currently in English mode, they don't
list an option for "Spanish?", they list an option for "Espanol?". The person
selecting the language needs to be able to read his language, and his country
choice, in his native language. So, Spanish options should never say Spanish
-- they should always say Espanol, and English options should never say Ingles,
they should always say English, with all country options being listed in the
native speakers language. (So, I should always see English (USA) as English
(USA), not Ingles (however Spanish refers to the USA)).

After choosing a language, the verification message should always be presented
in the chosen language, not the language mode that gdm is currently in. The
cancel button should always be presented with an established icon indicating
cancel, so the user can still choose cancel, if he made a mistake in his
selection.

I fully agree, and I agree this bug should be closed! Don't take me wrong.

I was merely pointing out that it is still technically a feature request, even
if it is worthless and adds nothing of value -- we already know we do not cover
a lot of languages. But saying "this is not a bug" is to give the wrong reason.
"This feature request adds nothing of value, because we already know this, and
without volunteers there is nothing we can do about it" would have been a
better reasoning.

Well, missing functionality could technically be considered a feature request.
However, there is no way we can add support for languages without volunteers or
a magic wand. For the affected languages, we have none of those, unless the
reporter is volunteering himself?

  l10n | other | Ver: GNOME 2.20
   Summary: "_Skip to" string not appears translated
   Product: l10n
   Version: GNOME 2.20
  Platform: Other
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Keywords: L10N
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Normal
 Component: other
AssignedTo: gnome-i18n@gnome.org
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 QAContact: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 GNOME version: Unspecified
   GNOME milestone: Unspecified

Incorrect translation
Application: totem

Incorrect text:
In all languages except English, does not appears translated the "Go -> Skip
to.." option.

Should be:
In the source file "src/plugins/skipto/totem-skipto-plugin.c", if we change the
line:
"{ "skip-to", GTK_STOCK_JUMP_TO, N_("_Skip to..."), "K", N_("Skip to a
specific time"), G_CALLBACK (skip_to_action_callback) }"
by this:
"{ "skip-to", GTK_STOCK_JUMP_TO, _("_Skip to..."), "K", _("Skip to a
specific time"), G_CALLBACK (skip_to_action_callback) }"
and compile it again, appears translated those strings. That is, we must remove
the "N" for leaving translated these two strings.

Thanks and excuse me for my english, but I'm spanish :P

Created an attachment (id=115665)

Updated libgnomeui for svn TRUNK: corrected a typo.

Would be nice if you use the 3rd attached version for check-in: has a tiny typo
fix.
