Re: Request for Freeze Break - Evolution

2008-02-25 Thread Johannes Schmid
Hi!

The new error messages added are:

 - Editor not launchable
The external editor set in your plugin preferences cannot be launched. Try
 setting a different editor.

 - Cannot create Temporary File
Evolution is unable to create a temporary file to save your mail. Retry later.

Well, I cannot really understand that you merge such a big change after
feature freeze but if you are going to ship this plugin for 2.22 anyway,
we should of course fix it.

Can I have a comment from the release team whether they think the
feature is critical/worth shipping, please?

Regards,
Johannes

Indeed, if this is a new feature, lacks both decent testing and
documentation, it should definitely not go in for 2.22, but at the start of
the 2.23 cycle. As things stand right now I'm not giving i18n string freeze
break approval---just my $0.02.

I agree with Wouter. I think it is not critical for 2.22, so a string
freeze break is not necessary.

Re: Request for Freeze Break - Evolution

Hi Andre!

the quality of the patch is quite bad. it has a typo ( :) and even
worse, the new error messages are not marked for translation. so it's
 kind of ridiculous.

well. i filed the bug report about this issue so i'm somehow biased...

currently nothing happens when you click on the menu item. there is a
hint in the terminal output, but i don't expect many users to start evo
 from terminal.

now there are two options: 1) string freeze break, 2) no string freeze
break by leaving the feature in a broken state and move/keep the
 plugin in the experimental set.
i would not call it a *serious* bug, but a visible and confusing bug (as
already written: you click and nothing happens).
*if* the i18n team decides to not accept the break: distros may still
patch evo and make sure that gvim is installed, so users do not face
 this issue.

Well, I would call it *serious* if it is confusing. Thanks for the
explanation, makes sense to me.

Approval 1 of 2.

Regards,
Johannes

The feature as such was done well before the feature freeze. But it was
marked experimental and lacked some ui bits like error reporting
strings. This patch adds it (Though there are some string bugs in it,
which Sankar will fix it, I'm sure).

As Andre said, it may be confusing if invoking the menu item just logs a
message on the console and doesn't popup the error to the user. I would
like to get this part of GNOME 2.22.

Thanks
Srini.

 Hi,

  I have updated a plugin for Evolution - external-editor

Initially this was a experimental plugin and we had to move it to the
  standard list of plugins.

Hence, it involved some new UI Screens and strings (for error-message).
The current version in trunk is bare-bones and lacks error messages and
  is unintuitive.

We're one week away from hard code freeze and have no releases between
now and the final version (well, one coming out on Wednesday but it
may be too late to get the approvals and the new evolution out for
that one)...and you want to break the last three freezes?

I'm really uncomfortable with this...
