I was a bit surprised to see Norwegian Nynorsk listed as a newly

it's been supported before, first time over 80% was GNOME 2.6.1, but it
dropped to partially supported around GNOME 2.12 or during GNOME 2.13, IIRC.

Supported languages in 2.12
I was wondering if I have to notify someone that Macedonian is over 80%? According to Danilo's weekly stats script and something else I read I know that all languages that have more that 80% of GNOME localized are considerd officially supported languages. Hi everyone :) Meanwhile, I'm trying to keep track of the Release Notes by diffing the current POT with my translation file. In the current POT, the number of supported languages has _gone down_ from 49 to 45. Is this really correct? However, the number of Vietnamese people in Vietnam who have access to computers is pitifully low. :( Increasing rapidly, but still tiny. Outside the homeland, of course, in the sort of countries which take in and support surviving refugees, there is plenty of access. I don't think our community would benefit from the computer-using figures being made public. :( As for causing you problems, I'm a bit busy right now, but anything for a friend... :D It's just a very rough estimate to give human touch to the translation stats, and by no means does it mean that so many people will be able to use the translation (some may not even be able to read, most will not have a computer AND Gnome on it, etc.). I guess the 80% number, which comes from string in the UI, should not be applied to these two. Location names are not *really* in the UI. And if you want to start a gnome-applets-location-HATERS' group - I am all for it. Locations-schmocations In Bulgaria we are already out of atlases and geographic maps to guess what some cites (and citlets, huts, small villages, military bases, jerk water in the nowhere, etc.) should be translated into. Not to speak of all the crative diacritics - this is a major test of the font rendering engine and glyph sets, is it not? Most of these can practically copy most of the names directly for most of the cases, while others like us poor Persian speakers who use the Arabic script (which is not even an alphabet in the European sense, it's technically an abjad) need to find the *pronunciation* of each single place name (some of them are even hard to find on the Internet) and transcribe them. We don't know a week before release how many languages are going to end up supported, so we put in a few more which are not too far away (65% or something like that was the limit I used this time). This is done so translators can translate all the languages which might get included, and once we finally know the status, we remove those languages, not hurting translations, apart from that single message with the count. But, the translators comment should note that the number is changing. Translating release notes: number of supported languages changed
Hi translators, I've done another small change in release notes: I've replaced the number of supported languages with 33 (it was 40 previously). So, be sure to update your translations (nothing else has changed in that message). I also removed all the languages which didn't make it from the list, so the message count should go down (it won't have bad side-effect on already completed translations). Sorry for the extra work this caused you, but I figured it's better to overestimate, than to underestimate, and it's really not too big a workload. Also, I'm a bit disappointed to see that the total number of supported languages has gone down from 40 in Gnome 2.8 (at the time of release, now it's 44) and 36 in Gnome 2.6. I hope many will continue improving their 2.10 translations, so we can see better support in 2.10.1. I accidentially removed it in commit 2b92a093d3109d1f1453394f82638c774ad1e79c . If we re-added it it would create a new string to translate for all other teams so I'm not sure what to do. Andre, Just wanted to share two of my favorite tricks for finding localized language names. 1) Look it up in the ISO639 or ISO-639-3 PO files for the relevant language. http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=iso-codes/iso-codes.git;a=tree 2) Look up the Language article in English Wikipedia, check out the left hand bar for an interwiki link to the same article in another language's Wikipedia. The number of supported languages is NOT exact in the release notes
Hi, The 3.2 release notes says "GNOME 3.2 offers support for more than 50 languages". But it is only 48 languages that we support at this time. I think we should fix the sentence. Alphabetical ordering of supported languages in release notes gets messed up when localized
Hey everybody Since we just heard from Vincent that GNOME 2.23.6 is out, that we are feature frozen and the it therefore is time to start typing the release notes, I thought that I would bring up an issue I was made aware of when I was translating the last set of release notes. In one of the sections there is a tradition for making an alphabetically sorted list of all the languages GNOME is supported in, and this list is translatable. The problem is that when I translated the language name they don't necessarily have the same first letter as they have in English, e.g. in Danish, Chinese starts with a K, and therefore the alphabetical ordering gets all messed up. You can see an example of this in the Danish version of the release notes from last time[1]. I know that this is purely cosmetic, but it does not look very professional. Does anybody have an idea on how to fix this? I suppose the best way to fix it would be to use some kind of magical alphabetically sorted item list function/environemt, in whatever kind of language the release notes are written in (isn't it some form of xml), provided of course that such a function exist. The other alternative, that I can think of, would be to make the entire list (or itemization) translatable and ask the translators to keep the translation sorted (and maintain the tags if there are any). But that is assuming a lot about the soberness of the translator. Does anybody have any other ideas? Works fine; and on collation at least there is a lang attribute to xsl:sort and I am passing it correctly, so it should be ok, however I just can't tell as I don't know if it is correct that Јапонски comes before Англиски in Macedonian (my non-latin test language). I just commited to library.gnome.org and to the 2.22 release notes to check if it works live. We should really be doing these things inside gnome-doc-utils, rather than as extensions for library.gnome.org. I seem to recall XSLT (or perhaps just libxslt) being kind of stupid with respect to locale-based sorting, but looking at the libxslt source now, it seems to have code in place. I haven't tested it to see how well it works. Can anybody provide me with a short list that should sort differently in different languages? I seem to recall ö being sorted differently in German and some other language. Hey everybody I was wondering, what is the status on this now? Would it be possible to get it up and running for the gnome 2.24 release notes?
