Hello All! My name is Michael Knox, I live in Hamilton, New Zealand. I am a Fedora Core user and support, plus a contributer to Fedora Extras. I came across an old translation effort for the Maori language on Gnome. I have emailed around my LUGs and have found little or no interest in continuing the effort. So my question is, how do I get started? Have this doc: http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gtp/l10n-guide/ How do I submit changes? Any advise on starting out? Thanks! Please see our wiki page [1], which is more up-to-date than some of the website pages. On that page, you can see several Howtos, and the list of translation teams. Please contact the current co-ordinator for the Maori team (John Barstow). If he is still active, he will tell you how you can best help in that translation effort. If he is, for some reason, unable to continue, and you are happy to become the new team leader, please ask John to email this list and advise that he is handing over to you. Please read the Howtos, as they give you a lot of the Getting Started info you will need. After you've done that, you're welcome to ask further questions here. :) The GTP wiki page also gives you links to the current status pages, where you can see the progress of the Maori team. You could also start looking at some of the files, to see what state they're in, what vocabulary is being used etc. Please also register with Gnome Bugzilla. You might also want to look at the Translate WIki [2], especially the Localization Guide, which contains a lot of general information on the translation process, comparisons of editors and other tools, and some useful tips. :) And again, Haere mai! gnome-getting-started-docs
Hi all, I just added a new documentation module gnome-getting-started-docs to Damned Lies. At this moment, this is mainly to test that everything in / with DL works as expected. http://l10n.gnome.org/module/gnome-getting-started-docs/ The purpose of this doc is to help new users get started in GNOME 3. This is the doc that shows up after you have finished setting up your system with gnome-initial-setup (already in DL). Please keep in mind that this is a new part of GNOME user documentation but is not yet officially included in GNOME 3 and is under heavy development. More real content is coming soon and I will let you know once it is ready. This doc is heavy on rich content, videos and illustrations. Note that strings included in video files and images are extracted to POT, and thus localizable as expected. While it is technically possible to render videos with translated strings, we will probably be unable to ship every translated video due to the overall package size. There are also some outstanding issues with the rendering process, especially with RTL languages. To address this problem, I will implement subtitles for each video so that users can get translated content shown below the embedded videos. You might want to ask jimmac if you want to know more about how the rendering really works, as it is black magic to me. :-) Bugzilla product / component will be created soon. hm, don't think so. AFAIK, the latest news on allowing subtitles is in branch 'wip/subtitles' and it has one experimental commit [1] But actually, these videos don't have voice, they have texts in english [2], so one would have to translate the text and provide the video in WebM already translated, which is available in CS language. Maybe using Blender to edit text in the .blend files in animation [3] is a way to achieve translation of them... Because the deadline for the next stable release is fast approaching, I think we can now move this doc to the official GNOME 3.8 doc release set... Because shipping a large number of translated videos would greatly affect the doc tarball / package size, we will make use of Mallard's support for subtitles, which can be then translated on Damned Lies. I will try to finish this next week, before the GNOME doc sprint starts in Brno. I will keep gnome-i18n updated on this. Hi all, Got a question on translated SVGs: To generate the translated SVGs that are used as still images for some topics, first clone the getting-started repo: git clone git://git.gnome.org/gnome-getting-started-docs Then run: cd gnome-getting-started-docs ./autogen.sh make Then change to the getting-started// directory to see your translated SVGs. Note that depending on your distro, you may need to install some additional packages to run the commands successfully. If you have more questions, please let me know. Hey, Just a heads up that when translating gnome-getting-started-docs, you should not commit the translated SVGs, instead, (re)generate them with ./autogen.sh && make. The translated SVGs will be generated for all available languages when releasing a new tarball. The .gitignore file is properly set to ignore these SVGs. You can actually build the getting-started tarball yourself to see the translated SVGs. The whole delivery mechanism that we are going to use for getting-started is still kind of evolving; ideally, there should be a build system to trigger rendering the translated videos whenever there is a translation commit pushed to the repo. So far, jimmac has had to manually re-render all videos, which takes many hours to complete. He temporarily uploaded the videos here: http://jimmac.fedorapeople.org/gnome3/getting-started/ We are planning to commit the translated videos on Monday when the 3.8.0 tarballs are due. Although working with large binary files like these in Git can be really painful, we have no better solution so far - no make target support etc. For translators, they don't need to do anything extra, just translate the POT file for getting-started, which also includes the strings found in videos. For GNOME 3.8.0, distribution packagers will probably want to create language packs for individual locales, as the overall package size for getting-started would be too large otherwise.
