When doing so, one has to migrate his personal settings including appropriate translation memory files, one has to adapt to the new program's environment, behavior, features, etc. It's just not as simple as saying, go and change your tool. And first and foremost, translators really should be aware of GNOME modules being migrated to msgctxt. For our Czech translators I'll make sure that they get notified in time, but who is going to warn people in the l10n wild that Poedit doesn't provide the context information (anymore)? Especially when everything is still just a goal proposal. Another error-prone l10n problem on the horizon? I hope not. (Also note that as far as I know, Poedit is the only GTK+ PO editor with a usable almost bug-free stable/development release for the time being.) Hello all Well my view on this is that, as a principle I don't like to let the tools I own determine what I can build, that argumentation is backwards in my opinion. HOWEVER sometimes principles have to give way for pragmatism, maybe it would be better to revert this for now and make it a firm goal for gnome 2.26. I don't think we can afford to risk alienating poedit users given that I know how hard it can be to find volunteers. As you have both pointed out, it is of course not guarantied that poedit devs will make this feature, but in this way we can give them a deadline and then in the 2.26 cycle we can simply say that it is going to happen no matter which translation editors support it. It does however not solve the problem of all the errors but maybe it would be a reasonable compromise. And if I understand correctly, poedit will simply present the same string to translate twice, albeit without context. Given the number of bugs that have originated over the years from the use of the | context construction, I do not think we should stop development on this because this one tool does not yet support it. As Andre pointed out, the behavior of the current Q_ macro in glib is error prone to translators and causing a lot of problems and real bugs. We cannot wait for a particular po editor to have support for msgctxt. There are plenty of tools and if one doesn't do the job there are plenty of alternatives, including using a bare bones text editor if necessary. The more important thing IMHO is the toolkits (glib, gettext, intltool, pootle, translate toolkit, Damned Lies, Launchpad, etc). All of these seem fine, however. A big question is however support for msgctxt on platforms that do not use GNU gettext. I guess this includes Solaris and the like. IMHO the gettext implementations on those platforms should be fixed to support msgctxt anyway, but in any case it should probably be taken into consideration for the GNOME goal. If there are any Solaris or OpenSolaris folks lurking on this list that know about the state of gettext and support for msgctxt on those platforms, please chime in. Assuming I haven't, what would be the impact of being the guinea pig for msgctxt from a development standpoint? Personally I'm indifferent at this point, mostly out of naivety to the issues involved. I just committed the patch for bug #326256:

Most of this has been because of the code migration from evolution- exchange to evolution-data-server [ under servers/exchange directory ] and evolution [ under evolution/exchange-operations directory ]. Most of these strings were already translated as part of evolution- exchange changes, but have now been moved to either of evolution or evolution-data-server. So, i am not sure if retranslation would be needed.
