Using 2 monitors

2011-05-09 Thread Federico Di Gregorio
Hi *,

first of all this is the first time I write here so, please, if there is
a better place or if I am out of topic just let me know. Second, after a
couple of weeks using Gnome Shell let me say that it is very good. It
has some rough edges, but being a dot-O release that's something one
should expect.

Anyway, my question has to do with using 2 monitors (that, especially in
the case of a laptop + external monitors, can be of different size). The
usability problem I see is that the lower right corner, used to popup
notifications, isn't a corner anymore and hitting the correct region
with the mouse is quite difficult (almost impossible unless you have
pixel-perfect control). I know that you can hit Super and go to overview
but the change of bahaviour depending on the number of connected
monitors is definitely bad.

A sinple solution I see is to just make the enire lower border and
corners a sensible area for the notifications popup. (An even better
solution would be to let the user configure which corners and side to
associate with actions, for example i really hate the activities popping
up when I overshoot the maximized window File menu: I'll just disable
that behaviour because I always use Super for that, but that's
digressing, sorry. :D)

Feature Request

2011-05-09 Thread kaddy080

Hi All
I am using Gnome 3 / Gnome-shell on ArchLinux... Very nice Job the Team has
done so far...

look forward to seeing Gnome 3 continue to innovate and add new features

Anyways, I have a small feature request... If there is a better place to
ask then please let me know

where to go other than here

Scenerio
You have just been installing a few applications you found in the
Repository that describes the software as Media Players, So
You went ahead and installed a few of those applications trying to find a
good one to try out but can't remember the name
of a couple of them at first. and instead of wasting time going through
all the applications in the Sound and video category

Feature Request:

A new Category introduced in the list called Recently Installed
Which obviously shows your last few applications you installed so you
can quickly navigate.

What do you think? Or would this feature be a waste of time since I have
heard that Zeitgeist is coming to Gnome 3.2 which I guess would show

you your history anyways?

just a suggestion...

2011-05-09 Thread Dokuro
I would like to version your request as follows, integrate the shell
with the application installer, and show (at the bottom) a list of
programs that could be installed based on the search you did, this can
be accomplished by keeping a local list of the programs available.
However distros differ on the app used for installing software..

Re: Visualization ideas for starting applications

2011-05-09 Thread Dokuro
i believe this is a good idea! +1

 Hello guys!

 Inspired by Starting an app on another workspace I got some ideas.
 The following should be understood as design ideas without any idea of
 how to implement them.

 At the moment you can drag an application to a target workspace and
 then you have to wait until the application is loaded and the main
 window appears before you can do further adjustments to the
 application window's size and position. Introducing a dummy window
 could solve this and would bring some further improvements.

 These would be:

 * The dummy window (DW)
 As soon as the application icon is dropped a dummy window (DW)
 appears. It has window decorations, close button and maybe a large
 icon of the application as a place holder in the main area.

 * Visual feedback
 From initiating the application start until the actual application
 appears, there is highly visible feedback saying this application
 window will soon appear here on this workspace. (Even better than the
 dummy task-button in the taskbar of other OSs. ;-))

 * Resizing
 The DW has the size the application had before closing. It can be
 resized and repositioned before the actual application is loaded. If
 the old size is not available a standard size will be used.

 * Abort loading
 The application loading could be aborted before the main window
 appears. Very useful when accidently starting a very large
 application.

 * Failing
 If the application fails to start, a message appears in the DW's main
 window. Maybe retry, console output or other useful stuff can be
 offered.

 * Workspace handling
 If the application is dragged to the empty workspace the DW can set
 the workspace to be used and initiate creating a new empty workspace.

 What do you think about these ideas?
 Are there some drawbacks in a matter of design?
 Is there already some work/thinking going on into this direction?

 Any comments would be appreciated.

Currently, if I'm not mistaken, GNOME 3 is going to highlight recently
installed applications somewhat like Windows XP did (not sure if Vista/7
do, as I've never used them). Personally I think that your solution is
much better, as I've always found highlighted applications to be a
little annoying. This is much easier to search through, though maybe
these two ideas could be combined somehow?

Hello Federico,

This was resolved in Fedora by using zones.. basically, they've modified X
such that if you go to the bottom corner on the left monitor to the
notifications bar, it won't let you go to the right monitor so you don't
have to have great accuracy to see the notifications. I unfortunately
cannot find the bug where this was discussed.

If you're using Ubuntu I do not believe that is implemented yet. I know for
sure it is in Fedora 15. Can't speak for OpenSUSE.

I think occasionally you snipe about how things are developed which I guess

line with the GNOME Code of Conduct so I don't see what the griping is

Presumably once finding and reminding is finished you will see recently
installed apps in that list?
Personally I wouldn't want another tab for recently installed apps. As most
of the time I don't need help finding them.

They don't need to implement it, they only need to update to a more
recent XServer/XFixes - the change was made upstream, so it's not
Fedora-specific (although the work was done by a Red Hat/Fedora
developer iirc).
