G2 Testing - Menu Option: File-Import

2006-01-07 Thread Volker Englisch

I am testing tonight the menu option:

File --> Import --> Test Druid
==
- What is the purpose of this? I guess this will be removed for the
final version and does not need testing, right?

File --> Import --> Import QIF
==
- Select a QIF file to load
When selecting a QIF file to load from the file system I have the
option to either display 'All files' or '*.qif' files.
My credit card bank is providing QIF files with an extension Qif
instead of qif and are therefore not included in the list of files.
I wonder if the option '*.qif' should be changed and not be too
literal and instead display all files ending in '*.[Qq][Ii][Ff]'

- QIF Importer Crash when moving back and forth between screens
  I am on the screen
 Match QIF account
and click the 'Back' button until I come to the screen
 QIF files you have loaded.
I click on the 'Back' button here but it doesn't do anything.
Only after moving the mouse off the button and then click
'Back' again something happens. Unfortunately, it's a crash.

Mmhh, now I am trying to reproduce the crash and it appears GC
only crashes after more then one files had been selected to be
loaded but one of those files got deleted again.
This is how I can reproduce the crash:
  * Select one qif file to be loaded
  * Click 'Load another file' to select a second qif file
  * Unload one of those files by clicking 'Unload selected file'
  * Click 'Back' to the 'Set the default QIF account name' screen
  * Click 'Forward'
  --> GC crash

- Matching payees to GnuCash accounts
When matching payees and I am clicking on a transaction the
Select Account
window comes up. Here I can select the expense account for the
payee. Once I selected an account and click 'OK' the window
  disappears.
It would actually be great if there was an additional button
'Select' that would update the expense account in the
'Matching payees...' screen _without_ closing the
Select Account
This would allow, for instance, to quickly select the appropriate
expense report for gas if I have several such transactions listed.
I know, this is probably an RFE and not a bug.

- Update your Gnucash accounts
  The instructions say
'Click "Finish" to import data ...'
but there is no 'Finish' button, only an 'Apply' button.

- Gnucash displays Error message when I actually do click the 'Apply'
button. This error message is displayed for about 50 times.

Thinking aloud...

It seems that "save report" is more of "save report options" with
a bubble help text that would state, "Save the current report options
(accounts, date range, etc.) to a custom report for future use."

While the bug persists, the help sub-text should also state,
"Be sure to choose a unique report name."

To me "memorize Report" isn't any more descriptive than "save
report".

Personally I like the programs that work by remembering any
changes I made to the default options by default -- i.e. if
I change the expense report to include only accounts A,B, & C,
then the next time I go to the default menu item for "expense report"
it creates the report for expense accounts A,B, & C exactly as
the last time I viewed that report (but if the options are from
"current year start" to "today" than the pie chart may look
different from the last time I viewed that report.)

I can always click the "revert to defaults" button if desired.

If the save reports feature is not supported in G2, I'd posit that
this would be acceptable default behavior for many users.

Just remembering a person's settings the last time they viewed
a report does not address the issue of when someone wants to
regularly show their "Year 2004 expenses" pie chart in a tab
above their "Year 2003 expenses" pie chart. For that use-case,
some type of "Save Report Options" or even "Save current as Custom Report"
or "Save as custom report" button is still necessary.

I agree with Derek that users may think "Save Report" means
"Save the contents of this report so I can send it to someone"
Another brainstorm I'm having while I should be going to bed is
to have a "Save as..." button which when clicked presents the
following options:

Save as html
- Saves the snapshot in time as a web page that can be
viewed exactly as-is at times in the future, even after
the account data has changed.

Save as pdf
- similar to save as html

Save as custom report type
- Saves the current options to a custom report
name, so that after the transactions in the datafile
have changed, the report can be run again.

I'm sure we can think of lots of other formats and I know I'm welcome
to submit patches ;-) I'm more thinking aloud to see if the English
and default behavior that makes sense and is pleasing to me would
be desirable to other users.

No sense in patching it if other people would hate it.

You are absolutely correct. I did think that "Save Report" would, in
some form, record the contents for future viewing.

After reading the crash explanation in this thread, I played with save
report last night and find it very valuable. I was wishing there was
some way to persist the set of options I chose :-). Previously I
would leave all the reports open so they would be there the next time.
Of course, this has the inconvenient side effect of taking far longer
than necessary to start gnucash if I just needed to record a
transaction because it would process all the reports.

Maybe putting the word custom in the labl, such as "Save Custom
Report" or "Save as Custom", would help associate the action with the
custom report feature.

Re: Budget questions. (wordy)

2006-01-07 Thread Daniel Widyono

Phew! What a thorough education that y'all are giving me, on something I
thought was *VERY* simple. IMHO I think the best thing would be to make
budgeting as flexible as possible (e.g. in this case, allow budgeting of more
than just I/E) and then *document the heck out of the different standard
usages / methodologies (e.g. business best practices vs. standard home
user)*.

You'd be invoking the old unix standby of giving 'em enough rope to hang
themselves with, and then teaching them through "man pages" (ca. 1980's) /
"html docs" (ca. 1990's) / "cms's" (ca. 2000's) / "ODF's" (forever)... dates
stretched via comic license.

Also, I really do enjoy the free Finances 101 lessons I get on this list. It
gives me a new appreciation (no pun intended) of the $1 car I "bought" some
time ago, as well as all the pain I go through to try to budget my personal
finances.

Considering I'm completely ignorant of any advantages to cairo, I
don't have any problem removing it. But, you'd have to be pretty
agressive about it, because make dist tends to find files that would
never be built and even notice the missing dependency. OTOH, I don't
have any problem distributing the "official" header even if it doesn't
work, and disabling the "with" option. Anything to get `make dist'
working.

can I have a write account for svn?

No, we are quite conservative with giving out new SVN write accounts, so for
occasional changes people are encouraged to submit patches.

Note that we DO add people as developers if then stick around, supply
lots of patches, become highly involved in the project, hang out on IRC,
and generally show some level of clue and prove some level of trust.
So, keep at it...

In the meantime, patches in email are the suggested route, as everyone
else has stated.

Great to hear. We definitely need much more testing, so your input is more
than welcome. As for posting observations: Either submit a bug report to
bugzilla http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Bugzilla
or post them here. In general, for one single problem the better choice is to
create a new bugzilla entry, but please don't forget to specify your exact
SVN version there (revision nr. whatever). Either one works fine, although
things that require more discussion are usually better suited in bugzilla as
they tend to get lost here on the list.

Your trivial patch might have gotten lost, because nobody is currently working
on the report spreadsheets. Feel free to post it again after several weeks
and/or also submit it to bugzilla.

Thanks for the other observations, but since I don't work on the reports and
style sheets I probably can't comment on that.

Should probably be a bugzilla entry. Note that you have to investigate whether
this is a problem of libofx (which is developed independently of gnucash, and
unfortunately currently rather slowly), or of gnucash. As a workaround for
yourself you might also consider writing a perl/sed script which changes your

Hi there!

There are some things that doesn't work for me at the moment, but I

At first, the ofx importer doen't correct import my ofc files. I would
like to correct that because on one of my bank accounts I have a
Tag, which will be read as which is wrong, the
is ignored than. The second thing is, that I would like
to implement a "[x] Always select Account" Feature.

Thats all from me at the moment.

Then I have the problem that the autocompletition doesn't work in 1.9.0
like in 1.8.12 where I had to type K:S:S for
Kategory:Subkategory:SubsubKategory.

It seems that we only need a 'select to the end of the line'
