Mandrake 7.1 install problems

2000-06-25 Thread Jeff Lapsley

Greetings,

First, I apologize in advance if this is covered somewhere... I really did
diligently try to find this is the archives and elsewhere, and did managet o
fix part of it. Anyway, enough groveling...

I am trying to install version 1.4 on a Mandrake 7.1 system. I first tried the
source, but it complained about guile problems. I installed the latest Guile
packages from Mandrake's cooker, and tried again... same problem. Then I tried
the RPM from ftp.gnucash.org and got Guile and Readline problems.

After searching the Gnucash archives, I found a link to a "fixed" rpm of Guile,
and patched it... all is well with Guile (sort of). Now I only get this:
"libreadline.so.3 is needed by gnucash-1.4.0-1"
It appears to be a similar problem to what Guile was, but I am not capable of
fixing it on my own.

Help is appreciated!

What guile problems did you get compiling from source? Installing from
the rpm is going to be problematic, since there seem to be so many
differences in library versions between RH6.2 and MDK7.1

I am an electrical engineer, doing power and lighting designs for
building construction. not much of a programmer ;-)

Dave, could you (or some of the others) give me pointers to
documentation on constructing RPM packages? The RPM manual is not enough

Sure, I've gotten good info from www.rpm.org, including the link to
the RPM HOWTO. The gnucash.spec file in the 'rpm' directory should
probably work with SuSE, too, with perhaps some minor modifications.

Let me know if you have any specific questions -- I'm not an RPM expert,
but I've learned quite a bit just getting the gnucash rpm to build
correctly.
