CSV Imports

2017-10-23 Thread Nick Judd

Hello everyone,

I have been using Gnucash for personal accounting for the last couple of
years. I have questions about CSV imports relevant to this thread:

https://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-user/2017-March/069914.html

1. Using Gnucash 2.6.18, my experience is that it is not straightforward
to import transactions from CSV using a CSV /I have generated using
GNUCash/, into exactly the same account structure.

Am I missing something here?

2. Looking over previous threads, I understand that Gnucash's CSV import
cannot really handle multi-split transactions. I need multi-split
transactions and I can code well in Python but am useless in Gnucash's
native C/C++. The solutions that immediately come to mind are trying to
shoehorn the data in using Gnucash's Python API (bad) or to use Python
to reshape the CSV into a more Gnucash-friendly object (easier ->
better). However, the threads I have seen focus more on the general
notion that CSV import really isn't going to be ready for prime time
until 2.8 than on the kinds of things CSV import can currently do well.
I am interested in the latter.

Apologies for retreading ground that I am sure comes up a lot. Thanks
for your help.

Best

Nick Judd

This is a difficult thing to sort out. There are a number of steps to
get it happen.

1. Double click the column headers, this will expand the column to hold
all the data.
2. Now the data doesn't fit in the window, and has a scroll bar at the
bottom. Scroll to the right.
3. Decide which column you are going to make smaller eg Description.
4. Take the bar to the right (between Description and Transfer in this
case) and first tow it to the right, then back to the left where you
want it to go.

I hope someone has a video available on this, because it would be
easiest demonstrated, not written out.

For such uses you can choose the "None" terms for your invoice. Then when you

Specific Due Date

2017-10-23 Thread Adrien Monteleone
I see the Billing Terms Editor only allows Net days & Proximo (which seems
nearly useless for most cases because of the ‘current month’ issue) but no way
to set a specific date either explicitly or such as “end of year.”

In particular, I’m dealing with a property tax bill which is due 12/31/17.
(they are always due on 12/31) To handle this each year for each property and
each taxing agency, I’d have to make custom Net terms that I more than likely
will never use again due to day/postal service variations. (and can’t delete
once they are used even though that bill is paid)

While terms seem very useful for many cases with respect to invoices, for
bills, it would be much more useful to enter the actual due date on the bill
rather than having to calculate it and make up a little used billing term.

Am I missing something or should I file a bug/enhancement request?

Re: Account report error for transactions the last 30 days

2017-10-23 Thread David Carlson
Tom,

A running balance is defined on the premise that amounts are in only one
account sorted in chronological order.

Your find criteria cross accounts and may not necessarily be in
chronological order, so it would be purely coincidental if the numbers
matched a transaction report on some selected accounts.

While a running balance could be defined as calculated per view instead of
per account, GnuCash doesn't work that way.

As the developers sometimes say, patches are welcome.

report are NOT equal when the search criteria is for a single
description and a single expense account. The search results may
contain splits for more than one asset account (credits) and will show
splits for only the expense account gas (all debits).

The debit/credit splits all appear correct, it is the totals and running
balance which are strange. Usually the debit total is correct and credit
total will be equal to only the latest entry(s).

GnuCash on Mac will *always* try to re-open the last file it had opened.
It will do this regardless of how you start gnucash. Unlike other apps,
even if you double-click on a data file, GnuCash WILL NOT open that data
file -- it will still try opening the last file you had opened.

Because you cleaned off your Desktop that file no longer exists where
GnuCash is looking for it -- hense, it's popping up a dialog to tell you
that it can't be found.

So you have two thing you can do:

1) You can replace the file. If it's looking in
e.g. /MyFinances.gnucash then you can just find your file
wherever you moved it (deleted it?) and then put it back onto your
Desktop. Then GnuCash will find it again.

or

2) You can bypass the dialog, and then from GnuCash go the FILE menu,
click on OPEN (File -> Open) and then browse to the location of your
data file.

Regardless, I would suggest that you not store your data file on the
Desktop. Make a folder and put it in there.

Good Luck,

GnuCash 2.6.18 includes the latest libz (libz.1.2.11.dylib, to answer your
question), so that’s not what’s going on.

Most likely there’s an open dialog blocking GnuCash’s event loop. They have an
annoying habit on Macs of hiding behind other windows or appearing in the wrong
Space, particularly if you have more than one monitor. Once you’re sure that’s
not the case you can open /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor, select
GnuCash, click the gear in the toolbar, and select “sample process” from the
menu. Save the resulting report to a file and open a bug report, attaching the
saved file.

I'll add that Edit > Find behaves slightly differently when invoked from the
Account hierarchy or from an account register.

The difference between the two is that when invoked from the Account
hierarchy, the search will be on all the splits in all accounts, while when
invoked on an account register, the search will only run on the splits in that
account.

Perhaps this has an effect on the balances you see (not tested myself) ?

But I do not have a simple /libz.1.dylib

I have:

/libz.1.1.3.dylib
/libz.1.2.5.dylib
/libz.1.2.8.dylib
/libz.1.2.11.dylib
and
/libz.dylib

So not sure which to try!

Is the latest version compatible with the 64 bit OS X 10.13?

Is there a workaround I can use?

Do you need more information or crash reports?

Thanks.

Geoff

You will need to ignore for a moment the description column (because it's
special)*, and adjust your other columns. You can try double clicking the
column headers, which may adjust them automatically, or drag the right side
out.
Once you have the other columns set correctly, you can shrink the description
column.

* As documented in the Guide, the description column is set to fill all extra
horizontal space on screen. This is confusing to many users,  but has been a
long standing convention in gnucash.

Hi,

I've got a problem. How can I adjust the spacing of the columns back to
their original format? Mine looks like the pasted image. The more I
adjusted them, the worse they become. Please help. Thank you.
