Re: Re: F::Q changes

2017-11-23 Thread uhopfer@gmail

Liz,

I just saw that you have wiki privileges and was asking for corrections.
Here is a small one that I had sent to the user list, but  has not been
implemented.

https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_Why_doesn.27t_online_quoting_work.3F

The windows version for running gnc-fq-check omits the fact these are
perl scripts.

IMHO, the lines should be modified to include "perl" (changes underlined and
bold):

*To determine the version of Finance::Quote you have installed: Open a
command/terminal window and run gnc-fq-check (C:\"Program Files
(x86)\gnucash\bin*_>perl_* gnc-fq-check" on Windows). The first
number in the result list is the Finance::Quote version.

Re: Unable to open 2nd set of accounts on one MacBook Pro

2017-11-23 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
This has long been an issue with GnuCash on the Mac, such that most of us have
simply gotten used to it. I will add something to the wiki FAQ shortly. It has
been entered as a bug (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=761024
), so it has been noted for
potential correction at some point. In the meantime, most of us just accept it
for what it is. If you are regularly using multiple data files, you can use a
terminal command to force GnuCash to open the file of your choosing:
/Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/MacOS/Gnucash
—-/path/to/my/gnucash/datafile/firstaccounts.gnucash

Re: Unable to create liability account under expense account

2017-11-23 Thread Buddha Buck
GnuCash is fundamentally a double-entry accounting program. If you don't
want to do double-entry accounting, then GnuCash is not the tool for you.
There are not any global settings to change it to a single-entry system.

My question to you is:

Your suggestion of putting a liability accounts payable account under the
associated expense account doesn't make sense to me based on my knowledge
of accounting. However, it seems to make sense to you. Can you explain why
you want to do this?

Thanks, John, but guess you didn't have a chance to read my entire post. I
can't uncheck the box for "remember the pin in memory" when it is *NOT*
checked to begin with!

Bottom line, tell me what folders and/or files I need to backup (and restore
as needed) that reflect my settings for aqbanking (and it's clearly not
merely the aqbanking folder).

Hi Buddha,

Thanks for the reply,Now I understood may be it is not a general accounting
practice.
To my requirement i am not required to record double entry,
I know that i am spending from my pocket there is no need for income or
profit and loss statement,
I just want to track my Expenses. and accounts Payable.

To my requirements, Instead of general accounting practice can i create a
liability type account under an expense type parent account at-least in
single entry accounting practice
If i required to do so can i change any global settings to do so in GNU
Cash.

Regards.

John,

GnuCash on the Mac ALWAYS opens the last file it had open—even when you
double-click on another GnuCash file. This is a long-known issue with how the
Mac handles the GnuCash startup.

File->Open will get you to your second set of accounts.

Unable to open 2nd set of accounts on one MacBook Pro

2017-11-23 Thread John Nightingale
I am treasurer of two quite different organisations. I have kept accounts for
both using gnucash, but on two different Macs. Now I have only one Mac. Both
sets of accounts are primarily held on a USB stick, one for each organisation.

Why can I not open the accounts on the USB stick that used to be opened on the
older Mac, now deceased? I attempt to open via double-clicking a file (I’ve
tried them all) of the desired accounts, but always the other set of accounts
opens. I have also tried to open from the opened accounts by closing all
windows, but that merely makes the app quit.

I have also tried to duplicate the app and locate it in the folder containing
the second set of accounts, but that doesn’t work either.

Is there a way to resolve this?

Then I think you need to use Alphavantage.  Take a look at the docs and the how

an environment variable to that key.  How to do this depends on your OS.
Lastly, change your online quote provider to other/Alphavantage.

Password screw-up "magic fix"?

2017-11-23 Thread Steve
I've used GnuCash for a long time, have the current stable version, Windows
10.

Question: Since Adam & Eve first danced, whenever I *accidently* hit
"remember PIN" (something I would never do intentionally, but seem to do
from time to time) when downloading transactions on a particular account,
I'm always screwed. "Screwed" meaning, after that it will never
successfully download transactions for that account. I've posted about this
from time to time over the years (when I had more hair), and I've never
gotten a satisfactory explanation and honestly, at this point, I really
don't care. However... when that does happen, there is no way to reverse
that designation (it seems to have no connection with the option in
"preferences" to remember the pin, eg if you accidently hit "remember pin",
and then go to look at the setting in preferences, the "remember pin" option
is not checked). So what I end up doing is going to online banking setup,
REMOVING the setup for that account, and then redoing it...

I know, I know, you want to know what my question is...

I keep a careful backup of my files, including the supplementary files. Can
someone specifically tell me, if I want to RESTORE an older online setup,
what folders and files do I need to restore, to just address the online
banking config setups???

Obviously (?) like an idiot I managed to hit that "remember pin" box earlier
today when dreaming about turkey, and had to go in and delete and re-create
my account settings. Thus what prompted this question on turkey day.

Re: Unable to create liability account under expense account

2017-11-23 Thread Frank H. Ellenberger
Hi Suresh,

there is a good reason why you can not mix this types of accounts. There
are 2 different dimenstions in accounting:

1. What is your position at a specific point in the time?
Assets, liabilites, equty express this.

2. What is your motion over a period of time?
Income and expense express this.

Re: Unable to create liability account under expense account

2017-11-23 Thread Buddha Buck
You should talk to your accountant about how to set up your accounts to
handle this type of transaction. Your proposed solution (a liability
account under the concrete expense account) is not how I would do it, and I
believe is generally not considered the proper method of doing it. Things
may be different according to the common accounting practices of your
jurisdiction, which is why you should talk to your accountant, and not to
us, about how to do it.

Expense and liability accounts are very different things. They do not show
up together on the same reports, they measure different things (expenses
measure what money is spent on, liabilities measure money is borrowed from
other people), and they have different balances (expenses have debit
balances, liabilities have credit balances). They can't generally be mixed
or added together.

In general, in GnuCash and other accounting packages I've worked with,
sub-accounts must be the same general "type" (asset, liability, income,
etc) as their parent account. The value/balance of the parent account
includes the balance of the child accounts. When you see an account name in
GnuCash like "Expenses:Non-Taxable:Charity:Church" That implies that there
are total expenses, some of which are non-taxable, some of which are
charities, some of which are to the church. The total non-taxable expenses
includes those going to charities like your church, your local Makerspace,
the local soup kitchen, as well as non-charitable non-taxable income like
(in the US) mortgage interest or healthcare. Putting a liability account in
such a roll-up would not make sense.

For your situation, I would have an A/P liability account completely
separate from the Material Expenses hierarchy, and when I received an
invoice for cement, I would create a transaction that debited the cement
expense account and credited the A/P liability account. Then, when I paid
the bill, I would create a transaction that debited the A/P liability
account and credited the associated cash/banking account.

If you use the "Business Features" within GnuCash it will handle the
details in the previous paragraph semi-automatically, including creating
the A/P account.

Unable to create liability account under expense account

2017-11-23 Thread Suresh Saragadam
I am working on a small construction work where i need to record my
expenses for both material and men (labour)

Initially i need to create expense accounts for

sand, stone, cement, under Total Material Expences

Total Material Expences
|_sand
|_cement
|_stone

i am purchasing cement on credit(Loan) that is accounts payable i.e.
liability

Here i need to create liability account for cement under material expenses,
but i am unable to create a liability account for cement under material
expense account

so that i can record total material spend including liability for cement

this is very minimum accounting requirement.

Re: Finance-quote

2017-11-23 Thread Fross, Michael
Then I think you need to use Alphavantage. Take a look at the docs and the
how to has been documented there. Or take a look at the archives over the
last few weeks. Basic approach is to get a free API key from
Alphavantage.co. Set an environment variable to that key. How to do this
depends on your OS. Lastly, change your online quote provider to
other/Alphavantage.

Printed Payment Authorisation, Credit Note Authorisation, etc

2017-11-23 Thread SimonD

OK, this is my first post to this forum. I have been using Gnucash for 6 or
7 months now since I took on a voluntary role as treasurer to a community
orchestra. Spent a fair bit of time under the hood tweaking invoice formats
to suit my taste and got it going very well. Thank you all.

Anyway I wanted to share something that might be useful which is only
obliquely covered in the documentation or forums that i could see. I needed
a document with space for two authorising signatures and maybe a recipients
signature and discovered that the Gnucash Cheque (Check) writing feature
could be customised to suit. I don't know if you can see the image I have
tried to insert. Anyway I was further pleased to see that the check print
feature is available in any account. I have cloned my original document into
several variants. Credit Note Authorisation, Petty Cash Voucher, Remittance
Advice, Invoice Discount Authorisation etc. I have included splits detail
where appropriate.

There is good documentation describing how the check printing works. A
simple text file dropped into the user library (I'm running on a MacBook) or
equivalent location depending on your operating system.

There follows a sample of one of my text "check format" files. Paste this
into a text editor, save it as "something.chk" and drop it into the "checks"
folder in the user library (or equivalent per os). Put a logo graphic in
there as well with the same name as referenced in "something.chk" file where
PICTURE is defined. You may want to generate your own Guid number (I got an
app for my phone to generate them) certainly if you run different variants.
The title appears in the print dialog. Any fields you don't want can be
suppressed by giving them coordinants that are off the edge of the page.

I would be interested to know if anyone finds this useful and can get it to
work from my garbled description.

Cheers, Simon.
