Re: [GNC] splits 3+ accounts, how to

2018-04-19 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Peter,

Not sure what you mean by 3-way split.

Do you mean 3 splits total? Certainly, that is possible.

A transaction can have many, many splits.

One split will be a debit.
One will be a credit.
The others will either be debits or credits as needed, BUT...

The total of all debits must be the same as the total of all credits.

For a simple example:

Dr. Expenses:Dining $100
Dr. Expenses:Tips $ 20
Cr. Assets:Cash $120

That’s a transaction with 3 splits that balances. Is this similar to what you
are trying to accomplish?

Regards,
Adrien

That’s because most of the “windows” are really dialog boxes as far as the GUI
toolkit is concerned and it complains if dialog boxes aren’t set up to behave
that way. There’s an open bug,
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=794853
, about converting some of
those dialogs to windows. If you have any in particular that you’d like
converted, please comment on the bug.

[GNC] sub-windows always staying above main window

2018-04-19 Thread Amish

Hello

This is a bit of inconvenience introduced in version 3.0

Earlier when I open sub-windows like "Find transaction", "Due invoices
reminder", "Due bills reminder", "Find invoice" etc., a small window
would open.

Earlier after opening those windows I could press "Alt-Tab" and switch
back to Main Gnucash window.

Now I can still Alt-tab but that small window will remain on top of the
Main window covering major part of Main window. Every time I am forced
to minimize small window to see Full contents of Main window.

Can we make it like older version? Where small windows simply go behind
Main window on Alt-tab.

Thank you

PS: Using Linux - Arch Linux. Gnucash v 3.0.

Re: [GNC] Missing Transaction

2018-04-19 Thread David Carlson
Raymond,

You are ahead of me, I am still running releases 2.6.11 or 2.6.19 depending
on which box I am using. Release 3.0 in windows version has some issues
that are show stoppers for me so I will be waiting for a while.

That said, it does work nicely for users that do not need the things that
are not working yet.

In your case, I suspect that one of the bugs in that release, possibly the
one where the Scheduled Transaction wizard does not update the register
window may also be causing your issue. That is just speculation, however.

You could try reverting to release 2.6.21 if this becomes a major problem
for you.

Perhaps other users who are using the online download feature in release
3.0 have a better answer than I can give.

Re: [GNC] Missing Transaction

2018-04-19 Thread Raymond Moritz
Hi David, and thanks for a quick reply.

I am running GnuCash v3.0, git3.0+, build 2018-4-01; Windows 10 Pro 64 bit
v1709.

In gnucash I simply did Actions/Online Actions/Get Transactions, specified
a date, and it downloaded 12 of 13 transactions that the bank had which
were dated after the last date in the imported GIF file.

Once I saw that I was missing a transaction I started Quicken and
downloaded transactions into it just for comparison. Quicken had all 13
transactions.

Today I again used the Gnucash Get Transactions. There was only one new
transaction and it downloaded properly. This is certainly not a show
stopper and I think GnuCash is great, but it is worrysome.

When you restart gnucash it should re-open the file you had open last

Re: [GNC] Missing Transaction

2018-04-19 Thread David Carlson
Raymond,

The most likely problem is that GnuCash did not detect that it was a new
transaction. That can happen foe a variety of reasons depending on which
file format is imported, the method used and which version of GnuCash you
are using.
For a better answer let us know exactly which version of GnuCash you have,
your OS and details of what you did.

When you say that you connected with Quicken do you mean that you used
Quicken to download into Quicken first then export to GnuCash? Obviously
you don't want to continue with that.

[GNC] 3.0 Install Fails

2018-04-19 Thread Richard Marmor
In Windows 8.1 I run 2.6.21 without problems; 3.0 is another story.
3.0 will not install at all. Installation attempts freeze about 33%
   into the
install process. I have tried 4 times including using different
   downloads in
case of corrupted files, always with the same result.
I did manage to get 3.0 to install with Windows in Safe Mode, but after
   re-
turning to Regular Mode, when 3.0 starts up, I receive an error message
   that
Gnucash is seeking a disk in an obscure back (memory card) drive, and I
   can't
make the message go away or move past it.
For the record, what I could see of 3.0 looked odd, too, kind of spread
   out,
not identical to the 2.6 versions I had run.
I ultimately had no choice but to uninstall 3.0 and reinstall 2.6.21.

Not really, except that the .log files are still created which is redundant, as
you just confirmed.
The sql backend indeed does save all the changes immediately and the Save
button also becomes redundant.

So, from what I understand, the whole point of .log files is to help prevent
losing changes if there's a crash before the user clicks Save with an xml book?

[GNC] Convincing my credit union to support online importing

2018-04-19 Thread Jeff Albrecht
Here in Arizona, USA Tuesday I attend the annual meeting of my credit
union. I met with the Senior VP / Chief Information officer. We spoke
about Quicken and it's rapid price hikes and move to subscription model.
I told him a bit about GnuCash and that I had just converted to GnuCash
and had imported a decade of Quicken data. I gave him some old school
paper with some resources and my contact info. I asked if it would be
possible to support online banking to support GnuCash. They do have a
.OFX export. Yesterday he emailed to me;

"... Intuit has ratcheted up their pricing model for several
years and good to know there are viable options in the
marketplace. We have connected with the team here at ___ and
will look into GNUCash over the next few business days.  Can I
get back with you by Friday, April 27^th ? My contact
information is listed below.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out
   with additional ideas or questions."

They seem genuinely interested. I would like to gather up information
that may be valuable to the credit union in researching and deciding to
support it, and perhaps links to implementation resources.

Does anyone have links etc. I might want to read and share with my
Credit Union? Beyond

I'm also looking for

 o banks that have implemented

Has anyone on the list worked with a bank to convince and/or implement

[GNC] Toolbar ignoring gtk-toolbar-style setting in Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic)

I upgraded this morning from Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful) to 18.04 (Bionic).

After doing so, my toolbar buttons in GnuCash are no longer large with

I like the large buttons with text, primarily because the graphical
icons in GnuCash are completely incomprehensible to me.

I can't figure out why my customization of this setting has suddenly
stopped working in Bionic.

I filed a Launchpad bug about this with additional details:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/+bug/1765401

Does anybody have any insight?

Thanks,

Jonathan Kamens

Thank you for the tip

It appears that all of the interested Nix users have switched from
GNUCash to Ledger (or, in my case, from Nix to OpenBSD), so I don't
think anyone will get to it very soon, but I have noted your suggestion
in the issue tracker.

I don't see any reason/need to replay a log file to a database backend.
One of the benefits of the SQL storage backend is that changes are
committed to storage immediately. So basically, so long as you don't
have a system-wide crash, there is a very small window where you could
lose data, and at worst you'd only lose a single transaction.

So I don't see why you would want or need to replay logs with SQL.

Is there a specific use-case here that I missed?

[GNC] Missing Transaction

2018-04-19 Thread Raymond Moritz
I’m new to gnucash. Installed OK. Imported QIF file with 13 years of
Quicken data. Adjusted the Account hierarchy that was derived from the
Quicken categories. Then I connected with my bank for online banking
features. Everything up to then went great. On my first transaction
download 12 of the 13 transactions downloaded perfectly, but one was
missing. It was in the middle of the pack and nothing unique about it. I
later connected with Quicken and all 13 downloaded.

Is this a known problem? Are there any fixes or workarounds for it? I
manually added the missing transaction so it balances.

Hello Adrien,

Thank you. It worked.

I am an long time user of Gnucash but newbie in this support network. Do you
recommend I report this to issue to support for incorporation in next Gnucash
