Re: [GNC] gnucash 3.6 -- reports -- "URL cannot be shown" - SOLVED

2019-07-07 Thread Harry G McGavran Jr
FWIW:

"README.dependencies" for gnucash states:

 webkitwebkitgtk-3.0 (Windows, Mac)
   webkit2gtk-3.0 (Everything Else)

For Ubuntu Xenial, this is clearly wrong.
webkit2gtk-4.0 is what is needed.

Re: [GNC] Import Price from CSV Bug? (Robin Chattopadhyay)

2019-07-07 Thread Robin Chattopadhyay
Hi Geert-

The intro screen DOES mention the namespace requirement in 3.6, I just
didn’t stop to read it until I found the bug report. It didn’t in 3.5 and
once I got my import working, I stopped reading it.

It was trivial to update my script, but (please forgive my after-the-fact
questioning) wouldn’t it have been cleaner to set a flag for the whole file
to distinguish between currencies and other asset types instead of
requiring the user to add the namespace to each record? In other words, is
there a normal use case for importing both currencies and other assets in
the same file?

Re: [GNC] gnucash 3.6 -- reports -- "URL cannot be shown" - SOLVED

2019-07-07 Thread Harry G McGavran Jr
SOLVED!

I had both libwebkit2gtk-3.0 and libwebkit2gkt-4.0 installed,
as well as libwebkit2gtk-3.0-dev.

I just noticed that libwebkit2gtk-4.0-dev was NOT installed.

So, I installed libwebkit2gtk-4.0-dev and rebuilt gnucash 3.6 from
scratch. That seems to have fixed it. For some reason in reading the
docs, I thought I only needed libwebkit2gtk-3.0-dev version for gnucash.
That's obviously wrong.

At least its now fixed.

Loads of thanks to Adrien and Geert for helping me focus
on webkit2 as the likely culprit!

I was beginning to get vibes that there was some problem with webkit.
It should be a supported version of webkit according to
README.dependencies, so I'm not sure what webkit to try to find
to make this work. I don't see any reports about this issue
on Ubuntu Xenial forums or ubunutu asks. I do see it with
a few other apps on some other platforms, but the answer is
usually to replace the app thats calling webkit. Not sure
what to do next...

So that means there's an issue with registering our custom url handlers on

Unfortunately I don't know the reason of this failure. If the guid does exist,
it may be that the gnc-register protocol failed to register with webkit.

This is a protocol (similar to http or ftp) internal to gnucash and we use it
to tell webkit to open an account register window. There are other similar
protocols to open the report options windows, invoices/bills, customers/
vendors,...

If you go to the transaction report and click on the "Edit report options"
link, does that work ?

[GNC] GnuCash 3.6 for MacOS 10.15 Catalina

2019-07-07 Thread John Ralls
Apple introduced a new security feature last fall, Notarization [1]. As anyone
trying the new Catalina public beta may have discovered, it declines to open
signed but not notarized programs downloaded from the web, including GnuCash
3.6-1.

I've worked out how to sign GnuCash while still allowing it to work on older
MacOS versions (it took a bit of experimentation, Apple's documentation isn't
quite right) and I've uploaded a new dmg to SourceForge:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/gnucash/files/gnucash%20%28stable%29/3.6/Gnucash-Intel-3.6-2.dmg/download

SHA-256: 184ae9693582fb11c4ee2c3cb5a329faf470f601d842ff6f2db5a16aedd239a5

I encourage testing by the adventurous, especially anyone who's installed the
Catalina public beta, to try it out. If there aren't any problems I'll notarize
all (well, until the next Apple security change) future releases the same way.

Regards,
John Ralls

Re: [GNC] gnucash 3.6 -- reports -- "URL cannot be shown"

2019-07-07 Thread Adrien Monteleone
From your efforts so far, I suspect you’re comfortable doing some Find
operations in text documents? If so...

Test an account or two (but not too many) and note their account names.

Check the tracefile again and make note of the new UUIDs that could not be
found.

Make a copy of your data file to work from.

As it is XML, of course it is plain text, but it might be compressed. Use tar
in that case to uncompress it.

Do a search in the XML file for the UUIDs that couldn’t be found. (that should
fail)

Then do a search in the XML for the account names that failed, find their UUIDs
in that section of the XML and you should notice, they don’t match what the
trace file reported.

If they don’t match, something changed your account UUIDs. (are these saved
reports your are running? There was also a bug for this I believe, certainly a
list thread)

If this is a saved report configuration, try running a fresh version. (from the
regular report menu, not a saved configuration) If the account links work, then
I would open the saved report, edit the Options > Accounts and reselect your
desired accounts. (maybe try one at a time) Then re-save the configuration and
test it again. If all is well, continue re-assigning accounts to your saved
configurations and updating them, or else just trash them and make new ones.

Alternatively, you could edit the saved reports manually, but I think that is
going to be more time consuming and trouble. (I don’t think the names are
stored with the report at all, only the UUIDs, so you’d have to know the old
UUIDs to map the replacements properly)

You should probably also file a bug in the Reports section. If the UUIDs were
changed in one place but not another(the data file, but not saved reports), it
can be of course ‘problematic’ as you have noticed.

Also, which version were you using prior and which one did you update to?

I have to step out for a bit, but I’ll check back in a few hours on any updates
you might have.

A little more information:

gnucash leaves gnucash.trace in /tmp when this problem occurs.

gnucash.trace:

* 17:27:51  WARN  [gnc_load_app_icons()] No icon named

I sure hope someone can help with this -- according to the
documentation, all the dependency requirements for 3.6 should be met.

Re: [GNC] gnucash 3.6 -- reports -- "URL cannot be shown"

2019-07-07 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Does this error appear for all account registers you try to open from the
report, or just some?

Does this error also appear when trying to open those same account registers
from *other* reports?

Do some accounts reliably fail on some reports, but work on others and vice
versa?

My suspicion would be something is amiss with your account UUIDs, as this
appears to be something like a 404 error.

Have you recently upgraded GnuCash? If so, from and to which version? (there
were some UUID issues for a few people moving from an older 2.6.x series to
early 3.x)

What backend are you using? (XML/SQLite3/MySQL/Postgres)

Re: [GNC] gnucash 3.6 -- reports -- "URL cannot be shown"

2019-07-07 Thread Harry G McGavran Jr
I think I found where the string "URL cannot be shown" is coming from
on my system -- libwebkit2gtk-3.0.so.25.10.14

The gnucash README.dependencies says webkit is a required dependency:

  webkitwebkitgtk-3.0 (Windows, Mac)
webkit2gtk-3.0 (Everything Else)

The version of libwebkit2gtk-3.0.so.25.10.14 reported
by my system is 2.4.11, but README.dependencies does not
say which version of webkit2gtk-3.0 is required.

The problem may be elsewhere and only shows up when libwebkit is
called -- but I thought this might help someone who knows gnucash
internals with answering the question: What can I do to fix this?
libwebkit2gtk-3.0.so.25.10.14

Re: [GNC] Dialog Box Layout and Cursor Displacement

2019-07-07 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Are you using MacOS by any chance? There is a bug already filed on something
similar for that environment. Retina displays also seem to be involved in some
cases.

https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=776602

The workaround for now, seems to be either resize the window manually, or by
maximizing or going full screen. (and then back to the previous size if you
like) And/or ‘document tabs’ need to be turned off in the Dock preferences.
(Mine is set to `In Full Screen Only` where the default is `Always`)

Also, please trim the non-relevant parts of a message when replying, in this
case, you should have just started a new thread rather than hitting `reply`.

Re: [GNC] Scheduled transactions: Why create in advance?

2019-07-07 Thread Adrien Monteleone
There is checkbox on the Since Last Run dialog to ‘Review Created Transactions’
that allows you to make adjustments if you wish. They will all appear together
Journal style.

You could also employ the Budget Module to plan the future transactions instead
of creating them in advance, and then use the Budget Report to show you their
effect on various balances.

The answer to all these questions in OpenSource is "because".
Someone wanted that feature and programmed it in.
You are just as free to program the "create but not exist feature" you
mentioned in the previous sentence.

[GNC] Scheduled transactions: Why create in advance?

2019-07-07 Thread AEG via gnucash-user
Having found that the only way to see the future effects of scheduled
transactions on my account balances is to "Create in advance", I went
through the tedious process of individually setting all 60+ of my scheduled
transactions to create 14 days in advance, then later going through the
whole process again to change this to 7 days in advance. (A global setting
would have saved a lot of time!)

Although creating in advance is not a problem for some transactions,
undesirable consequences with others have persuaded me to abandon this
feature entirely and rely on AceMoney to provide the information I seek. (I
had hoped to discontinue use of AceMoney in favour of GnuCash). The problem
I refer to is as follows...

Two of my scheduled transactions, which were set to create 14 days in
advance, turned out to have errors or lacked information that I wanted to
enter on those and all future transactions. This meant that, not only did I
have to edit the future transactions in Transaction Editor but to also
individually edit the ones that had already been created.

If the transactions were just made visible in the account registers but not
created, I would have been able to spot the errors and change the scheduled
transactions before any of them were created, which is something I can
easily do in AceMoney. This leaves me wondering how/why others use the
"Create in Advance" feature because I'm finding it difficult to understand
why it exists.
