[GNC] Duplicate emails in GnuCash Digests
Hi, For quite a while now (at least several months), there have duplicated emails in the GnuCash digests. For instance, in the email below message 3 is a duplicate of 2, and 6 is a duplicate of 5. It doesn't seem to happen all the time but I often notice this for emails from D, Geert and John Ralls, although John Ralls' message 4 here is not duplicated. I'd really appreciate it if someone could fix this. I can see it the XML, but that seems a little fragile. I'm talking about the company name entered in File->Properties->Book Option->Business not a Vendor or Customer Name. Re: [GNC] Accounting FOr Beneficiary Income
Hey Stan, Thank you for your condolences Hopefully you did that in your name _as_beneficiary_ of your mother. I worked with the broker who was handing the account for my mom (it's a major brokerage) to make sure everything was done correctly. My mom had named me beneficiary on every account she had, so nothing ended up in probate. I'm guessing that your mother died in 2019? If by any chance she died in 2020, the above rules are still in effect but you no longer use the life-expectancy tables to compute a Required Minimum Distribution. Instead, you have 10 years to drain the IRA, on whatever schedule you choose. She passed on the 5th of January this year. She had already declared a specific amount she was going to withdraw for this year and I have to keep that going. After the year is up I am going to adjust the disbursements to fit my financial needs for my current season of life. Right now, I plan to take most of it and put it into a Roth as it is disbursed. This is before I have had any real planning meeting with the advisor, mind you, so that isn't set in stone investments: Assets:Investments:Mother's IRA. Your transaction will debit that account by the value of the IRA. You're not required to follow Generally Accepted Accounting principles, so the credit account in that transaction is up to you. Here are some options: * Your main equity account. * Equity:Extraordinary Income (one account for this and other large one-time entries) * Equity:Inheritance(s) * Income:Inheritance(s) * Income:Miscellaneous Right now, the transactions go as follows: IRA Account -> Brokerage Checking Account (some requirement - I forget why right now) -> Personal Checking Account (later some of this will go into a Roth as well). IRA Account -> Federal Taxes (still working on the state tax estimate) I guess my hangup was that I felt I needed to show it as income since taxes were being taken out as part of the disbursement. But - thinking it through with your help - it's not like this money is coming from a 3rd party like an employer or a client. It's already my money, so it's an asset right? Here's my answer to a related question that you didn't ask: Your mother's IRA, like your other investments, will grow or shrink over time. Those changes don't affect your income tax. But over time, the balance in GnuCash Assets:Investments:Mother's IRA will get further and further out of step with the balance in the actual account at the brokerage. Since there's no need to keep track of profit and loss in an IRA, I resolve this by checking the balance at Vanguard every three months, and then I debit Assets:Investments:My IRA and credit Equity:Unrealized Gains/Losses. (If the IRA is down, the credit and debit are reversed. If you enter negative numbers, GnuCash does that for you automatically.) Thanks for this. You're right - it was a question I knew needed an answer but hadn't gotten that far yet Maybe it bothers you that your income on your tax return doesn't match your income in GnuCash? Something like that. I was picturing having to report where all my money came from for the year. So, because I was getting money from something and paying taxes on it I thought that meant the transaction should be classified as income. But, it sounds like it's just an account transfer that costs me taxes to do so to speak Unless your mother's estate is large enough that you need to be concerned with Federal or State estate tax, these refunds won't flow into taxes. Nah, it was pretty simple. And the amounts of the refunds on these accounts are pretty small. [GNC] Segmentation fault when I try to enter anything
Hi, I recently upgraded to gnucash 3.7, or rather reinstalled it on a new Ubuntu 19.10 system. I've started to get reproducible segmentation faults: - start gnucash (all is well) - open my existing expenses file - go to any account tab - try to write anything in any column (description, amount, etc.) - as soon as I press a key to enter anything, I get a segmentation fault OR - start gnucash - create new file - create an account - go to account - write anything in it which both result in Segmentation Fault (core dumped) Following the advise at https://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-user/2018-February/075121.html, I ran gnucash --log gnc.backend.dbi=debug which is supposed to "write the SQL queries to your gnucash.trace". Unfortunately there is nothing there. The contents of gnucash.trace: * 00:50:44 INFO [gnc_module_init_backend_dbi] GNC_DBD_DIR not set: using libdbi built-in default Not sure if that INFO message is relevant. Otherwise there is the file money_tracking.gnucash.20200201005051.log which contains nothing much either: mod trans_guid split_guid time_now date_entered date_posted acc_guid acc_name num description notes memo action reconciled amount value date_reconciled - = START = END I.e. it's empty as far as I can see. In case it helps, I have run `strace -ff`, the last lines of the 14 strace files are below What else can I do to diagnose the cause of this problem? Some incompatible library that got wrongly installed? I deleted gnucash and reinstalled it, but this does not resolve the problem. I've also moved /home/gerrit/.local/share out of the way but the symptoms remain identical. I'm a bit surprised at the latter; when I move the .local/share out of the way digikam still starts with my default expenses file, how does it know? Re: [GNC] Nesting too deep for budget?
As you have discovered, the Budget module is showing its age and needs some TLC. I haven’t checked the documentation in some time, but perhaps it needs some refreshing as well. Due to limited developer time, I don’t expect the module itself to be updated any time soon, but contributions are always welcome on the documentation front, which, while not solving the usability and discoverability issue, would at least provide some guidance for new users on how to navigate the budget window. It is unfortunate even documentation work has such a high entry bar, but it is doable. At the very least, please look over Bugzilla and file bugs or enhancement requests for those parts you think can be improved. As I am doing a yearly budget I have three columns and I had double-clicked/pressed Enter on the "Account Name" and "Total" columns as there are characters in those columns. Re: [GNC] Edit number of recently opened books
It added the key-value just fine. I checked the plist after. But it isn’t being honored by GnuCash. I tried both “maxfiles” and “max-files” key names on a whim. (most other keys are hyphenated between words) Maybe John can chime in if he has a moment. Is there an RFE filed on this? I would think if the preference is already allegedly usable, (and 10 file locations are being stored regardless) it may as well be exposed to the user. Re: [GNC] Nesting too deep for budget?
Nate, First, the budget by default, I don’t think, shows any ‘cells’ like you would think of them in a spreadsheet. You can turn on faint grey lines here by going to Preferences > General > General and then checking off the two options to “Enable horizontal/vertical grid lines on table displays”. This may also show the grid lines in other places you may not want, so toggle as needed. Note also, you have to double-click where the cells are supposed to be to get the entry field. There is a way to tab/enter around the table, but it is quite cumbersome. It does not play nice like a spreadsheet app. Second, the column order in the Budget module should be Accounts 1st period 2nd period ... Total The dates of those periods are determined by how you set up the budget, which can be changed with the ‘Options’ toolbar button. So the first column has account names. The second and subsequent columns are for each period. If you enter amounts in the child accounts, the parent cells will show the sum of those entries in a grey font. You *could* enter amounts for the parents, but in this case you don’t want to. Also, be aware that parent accounts (maybe only those set as placeholders, I don’t recall) Will show “0.00” in light grey font for any parts of the tree that don’t have entries yet. But the child accounts will have nothing there in the cell. The cell will be completely blank. And if you don’t have the grid lines turned on, that row will look like a blank, white (empty) row. But just double-click where you think the cell ought to be and you’ll get the entry field. The Filter settings are not remembered. You have to reset them each time you open the Budget. I think there is a bug filed on this already. Re: [GNC] Edit number of recently opened books
Hmm, I don't have access to an Apple computer, so the command I proposed was based on one I found in the FAQ. I know which gsettings key it refers to (org.gnucash.history/maxfiles), but I may have the exact command invocation to set it wrong. Perhaps it needs quotes around the number ? And perhaps the MacOS build of gnucash has another way of handling the history file list? I didn't see anything to that effect in the code though. Circling back to this, I've tried this dialog and I still don't have a cell in the Budget tab that I can enter a value except for the parent of the subaccounts which is not useful for me. The list of subaccounts does change when I check or uncheck Show unsued accounts or Show zero total accounts, but in no case does a cell appear in the second column from the right. I deleted the prior budget attempts and started fresh. I am using 3.8 on Debian. I am only interested in an expense budget so I only have the Expense Account Type checked in the Filter Budget dialog. In the Other tab, of the three only Show hidden accounts is not checked. My expense tree looks like this: Expenses Dual Parish sub accounts... Home sub accounts... Expenses, Dual Parish, and Home are marked as Placeholder accounts. No matter whether any or all of these are Placeholders or not, there is only a cell to enter a budget amount in Dual Parish and Home. No accounts below either provide a cell for entering a budgeted amount. Curiously, beyond this, when I close and reopen the budget I get all of the top level accounts. - Nate -- "The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds. Re: [GNC] Accounting FOr Beneficiary Income
Hello, Dave! My sympathies for your loss. You say "IRA", so I assume you're talking about US law here. > 1. She had a traditional IRA account that she was receiving > disbursements from. I worked with the broker and just rolled all of > the accounts into my name. Hopefully you did that in your name _as_beneficiary_ of your mother. "If the inherited traditional IRA is from anyone other than a deceased spouse, the beneficiary cannot treat it as his or her own. This means that the beneficiary cannot make any contributions to the IRA or roll over any amounts into or out of the inherited IRA. However, the beneficiary can make a trustee-to-trustee transfer as long as the IRA into which amounts are being moved is set up and maintained in the name of the deceased IRA owner for the benefit of the beneficiary." Source: https://www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/plan-participant-employee/retirement-topics-beneficiary So the account title needs to be something on the order of "Emily Jones IRA (deceased February 2, 2016) for the benefit of Riley Jones beneficiary." Source of example: Jane Bryant Quinn, _How_to_Make_Your_Money_Last_ (2016), pp 185-187. Quinn warns "you have to get the paperwork right! One small slip and the shelter will collapse, forcing you to take the money (and pay any taxes) all at once." If you got competent advice and did it right, great. If you didn't, I don't know whether this can be fixed but I would consult a tax adviser, pronto. I'm guessing that your mother died in 2019? If by any chance she died in 2020, the above rules are still in effect but you no longer use the life-expectancy tables to compute a Required Minimum Distribution. Instead, you have 10 years to drain the IRA, on whatever schedule you choose. Source: https://www.investopedia.com/terms/i/inherited_ira.asp Now on to your accounting questions ... > So, now I have this money that was given to me and I didn't pay > into. Create a new asset account, in the same branch as your other long-term investments: Assets:Investments:Mother's IRA. Your transaction will debit that account by the value of the IRA. You're not required to follow Generally Accepted Accounting principles, so the credit account in that transaction is up to you. Here are some options: * Your main equity account. * Equity:Extraordinary Income (one account for this and other large one-time entries) * Equity:Inheritance(s) * Income:Inheritance(s) * Income:Miscellaneous I don't see any need to consult a CPA about this. As long as the entries are clear, you're not legally required to follow any particular form. I personally like to restrict my Income and Expense accounts to ordinary income, items that occur in the course of my customary life activities, items that would appear in a budget. I have to buy groceries every week, so Groceries is an ordinary Income account on my books. But it would be absurd to budget for an inheritance, so I prefer to record that in an equity account rather than an Income account. > I have to continue receiving disbursements from this > account every year. Because this is a traditional IRA, I have > to pay taxes on this income. Because of this, should I set the > IRA account as some sort of equity that I can get income from > and pay taxes on? No. The IRA is an asset, just like your own IRA or 401(k) or your bank account. When you take money from it, you debit Assets:Cash or Assets:Bank Accounts, and credit Assets:Mother's IRA. You can see that makes sense: you are converting one type of asset into another type of asset. You can't turn equity into an asset, at least not in this context. If you enter negative numbers, GnuCash does that for you automatically.) How to record taxes? Basically the same way you record other taxable events, like getting a paycheck. This is already pretty long, so I'm going to skip that. > I tried setting it up as an investment asset, > but I couldn't then make an income transaction. I don't understand what you mean here by "couldn't" -- couldn't figure out what you wanted to do? couldn't make GnuCash do it? other? > I think I need to reflect this as income due to the taxes being taken > out. Otherwise it would just be a transfer between asset accounts. But it's _not_ income, any more than withdrawing money from your bank account is income. It _is_ what you say a moment later, a t

I just tried this on Catalina, no dice. The pref was added in the plist file, but it doesn’t seem to have any affect. I also tried logging out and back in after the change. On OSX 10.14.6 the 'defaults write --app Gnucash' command was invalid due to syntax issues. [GNC] Accounting FOr Beneficiary Income
Hello all, My mom recently passed away and I am the sole beneficiary on all of her assets. I am wondering how to setup and record few scenarios. 1. She had a traditional IRA account that she was receiving disbursements from. I worked with the broker and just rolled all of the accounts into my name. So, now I have this money that was given to me and I didn't pay into. I have to continue receiving disbursements from this account every year. Because this is a traditional IRA, I have to pay taxes on this income. Because of this, should I set the IRA account as some sort of equity that I can get income from and pay taxes on? I tried setting it up as an investment asset, but I couldn't then make an income transaction. I think I need to reflect this as income due to the taxes being taken out. Otherwise it would just be a transfer between asset accounts. How should I set this up? 2. As I am closing out some of her accounts (utilities, insurance, cable, etc) she is being issued a refund. Which is being paid to me. Should I just list this as "other income". Technically it is a refund, but I did not make the original expense to be refunded for Thanks!
