Re: [GNC] How to accurately record Use Tax

2020-02-23 Thread David Cousens
Brandon,

What you are doing is basically OK but instead fo using an Accounts Payable
type account for Future
Expense(A/P):MI Use Tax it would be better to have that account of type
Equity as an Accounts Payable type account is a specialized account of type
Liability and incurring the liability to pay the tax is a decrese in your
Equity

Re: [GNC] How to accurately record Use Tax

2020-02-23 Thread Christopher Lam
For your use case you could use AP accounts and bills. Let's assume your
use tax is 15% to be cleared in December 2020.

I'd think, during purchase
24/02/2020 Buy something, will also need to pay use tax
Expense:MI Use Tax +$100
Asset:Bank -$100

and post a bill, posting date is 01/12/2020
31/12/2020 Use Tax due
Expense:Use Tax $15
A/Payable -$15

and in December 2020, clear the AP bill as usual.

---

You could also do it manually without using AP/AR accounts
31/12/2020 Use Tax due
Expense:Use Tax $15
Liability:Future Use Tax -$15

and in December 2020, clear the Liability account.

---

> Other payable accounts you create should be of type ‘liability’ and you
can manually enter stuff there all you want. (there can be only one account
of either *type* AP or AR)

You can actually have as many AP/AR accounts as you like, in different
currencies too.

Assuming you are referring to the PortableApps version, then it's built
from official GnuCash source for the PortableApps environment.

You've already been told it wasn't built *by* the GnuCash team, but it's
as much "from the team" as any other PortableApps software.

Re: [GNC] Change the First Day of Week

2020-02-23 Thread Adrien Monteleone
The bug report: https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=752395, is about the
Transaction Report which has a weekly sorting option.

You’d have to file a new bug on the ‘Expenses vs. Day’ of week report/chart
specifically. You might want to link it to or reference bug 752395 since it
might entail the same eventual fix.

Adrien

Got it this time. That would be the bug then.

Check Bugzilla, I don’t recall if the current bug deals with that report
specifically (or some other report) or is generic to all of them.

Do your pop-up calendars when entering dates, or using the Scheduled
Transaction editor show the correct start day?

Re: [GNC] Change the First Day of Week

2020-02-23 Thread Adrien Monteleone
The picture didn’t come through, but there is at least one bug report on this
already, though I thought it was resolved.

This can be affected by your locale settings in your operating system.

If the locale itself defaults to a day you don’t prefer, you can either edit
the locale file, or create a custom one.

There was a thread on this list last year about doing so, do a search on the
archives on ‘first day of week’.

To reinforce Geert's suggestion of trying other themes, on Ubuntu the
Ambiance theme gives vastly improved spacing on tabs (at least when
they are down the side, don't know about across the top) so it is well
worth trying other themes before delving into the depths of DIY.

is there a way to bring back the old behaviour? It looks like someone
has tried to pretty things up, but it has made it unusable.

The "someone" in that sentence is the upstream gtk project. We depend on
their code to create the graphical user interface for gnucash. When Gtk
switched from version 2 to 3, they redesigned all of the user interface
elements the gtk library provides. In many cases the new elements take up
more space as you noted.

As to what can be done about it: you can tweak the style sheet used by
gnucash to render the user interface elements on screen. Starting points
for this can be found here:
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/GTK3#Visual_Styling

Thanks Geert,
I'm both super happy that I can do something about it, and also sad to find
out that all those threads that ended in "fix the CSS" apply to me. I was
hoping it wouldn't be the case but kind of expecting it. I will report back
with results.

I do sympathize.

Unfortunately the GnuCash development team is too small to maintain its own
custom css style to adjust for the design choices made by the Gtk developers.
We used to have a theme selector for 2.6, but that was no longer supported
either after Gtk switched to version 3.

If you happen to be on linux (you didn't mention your platform) you could try
to use the gnome tweak tool to install a different gtk3 theme. You can
download plenty from https://www.gnome-look.org/browse/cat/135/order/latest/

I don't know of a similar tool for the other platforms but it should be
possible to install a different Gtk theme on these platforms as well, albeit
manually. If you find a nice predefined gtk theme that uses layout choices
that better fit your requirements you could try that route rather than
tweaking css directly.

Hi Geert,

I have managed to make a start on what I would like..

tab * {
  font: 9px arial, sans-serief;
}

in    .config/gnucash/gtk-3.0.css  changes the font size in the
tabs, but it is in every tab including the setting tabs. I can't work
out how to make it just to apply to the notebook gtk section. Also the
padding on the tabs could definitely be optimised as well to fit more
text in. I can see the setting in gtk inspector, but don't know how to
translate that to into css. It is not very intuitive! All the examples
seem to be adjusting colours and other fairly simple stuff.
