[GNC] error message with finance::quote gnc-path-check + problems with retrieving quotes for 2 symbols.
I had to reinstall strawberry perl and finance::quote (1.49) and now can download again all my quotes except for 2 symbols using alpha vantage, vanguard, or yahoo_json. I discovered that gnc-path-check comes back with a programming error message (below): perl gnc-path-check -v 2>temp.txt Can't use global $_ in "my" at gnc-path-check line 60, near "my $_ " Execution of gnc-path-check aborted due to compilation errors. That error needs to be fixed, but I do not know any perl. I wondered whether the error could be related to my new problem of retrieving 2 of 3 TIAA-CREF symbols with yahoo_json that I used to be able to retrieve automatically, but now can only retrieve manually. In other words, yahoo still has information on the symbols, but f::q does not retrieve it. The automatic retrieval works for 1, but not the other 2 sumbols. gnc-fq-dump gives the same anwer. Re: [GNC] Fractional Hours?
That explains something I have always wondered about. I often have transactions that are in US dollars in one account and Mexican pesos in the other account. It expressed the exchange rate as a fraction, but a decimal value would be more useful. Now I know how to change that. I generated an invoice last month for 85.50 hours. Weirdly, the invoice shows this as 171/2. Re: [GNC] Guidance request.
James, I’ll tackle a few of those for you. (not necessarily by your same point list) First - 2.4 is several versions old. You’ll need to first install something from 2.6 (the next major version after 2.4), open your data file with it, and perform Check & Repair. Repeat this for one of the 3.x releases. (version number scheme changed w/3.x) Then do so again with 4.x. Always work on or with a backup data file of course. Second - You asked about a 4.0 beta, that is 3.906 which is a testing release, but is effectively (per the announcement) a release-candidate barring any major issues. Third - For documentation, there is a Help and a Tutorial & Concepts guide on the website, along with a Wiki. The wiki fills in some gaps in the official documentation and has some use-case advice. (as well as detailed instructions for building on Linux) You can install/build the two official docs on linux. See the build instructions on the wiki for more info. (they come with the Win version package, and I thought Mac as well, but I’ve never been able to get them to open from the app on Mac. I just visit the web version if I need them.) Fourth - Syncing is being done by some users via their own file server or a 3rd party like Drop Box. Note, there is no mechanism in place to prevent 2 people from opening the same data file at the same time other than a warning dialog. But if you’re the only one accessing it and you just want to make it portable but in one physical place, then that shouldn’t be an issue. Maybe look over a few threads here about doing this first, at least to see if there are any hiccups or issues to be aware of. Fifth - Backups are of course, on your own. Certainly rsync would work. I personally use BackInTime on my Linux systems. I like that it is somewhat similar to TimeMachine on my Mac which I prefer over other solutions I’ve tried through the years. Of course, rsync is a bit more ‘do it yourself’ but if you are running Gentoo, I don’t expect that to be a roadblock. I once played with Bacula but found it to be way too much for what I needed. I’m not familiar with the GnuCash for Android app, and I’ve seen list threads discussing that it appears to be stalled or abandoned. You’d have to find their community and developers. It is a separate project from GnuCash. Hope some of that helps, Regards, Adrien > On Jun 22, 2020 w26d174, at 5:32 PM, james via gnucash-user > wrote: > > > Hello, > > So I successfully used gnucash for a small S-corp, > from 2012, thru 2017(September). > > Then several concurrent/random illnesses sidelined my gnucash usage. [GNC] Guidance request.
Hello, So I successfully used gnucash for a small S-corp, from 2012, thru 2017(September). Then several concurrent/random illnesses sidelined my gnucash usage. The small s corp trudged along and I did manage to get tax returns file (both S and personal) but the 100-200 transactions per year where not entered after July 2017. After years, I'm mostly healthy and ready to compile the latest version of gnucash on gentoo (actually 3.8b-r1 ) is already installed and looking at me, to enter data. So, I'd like to set it up on postgresql and wait until version 4.0 is at least released in beta. keeping copies on at least (2) distinct linux systems is required, and a way (methodology) to sync one to another is very important. I'd be greatly appreciative for info on how to input the data from 2012-2017, as I believe it was a 2.4 version of gnucash to gnucash 4.0+. The old 2012 lappy still runs, so I can boot it up, when the times is at hand to migrate that old data to the system running 4.0+. Once I do that, move the old data, into gnucash 4.0+, I'd then manually input the data for years 2017 (august forward) and 2018 and 2019 and 2020. The company just had a credit card, a checkbook (few written) and me accessing the data via gnucash. 1. Suggested docs/guides to read 2. upload the old data (2012-2017) lappy to lappy and test. 3.Setup/use OFX with a bank and directly download data into GNUcash. 4. Eventually input/correct 2020 data under the new 4.0* version. 5. have some sorts of rigorous backup system, to a different computer (options?/suggestions?). rsync by drive to remote drive ? Anything else anyone can suggest? Oh, my phone is Android 9 but looking at an Android 20+ in a few months... (unlocked stacks). A discussion on Security for gnucash on Android would be most welcome. Or a place to read about Gnucash security issue on both linux/android. All discussion and suggestions are welcome. Re: [GNC] QUESTION: transaction classes (tags) like QuickBooks?
Zi, Welcome to GnuCash! The answer is ‘yes, sort of’. While it doesn’t have an explicit class facility, you can make up your own tagging and filtering system. Specific to your example, each transaction can have multiple splits, that isn’t an issue at all. Each split has a ‘memo’ line where you can describe the split. Additionally, each transaction has a Description (payee if you like) *and* a Notes field right under the Description. You have to turn on View > Double Line to see it and use it. My personal preference is to use Description for payee, Notes for a general transaction description or info, and the Memos as descriptions specific to each split. You also have a NUM field, which may or may not be useful with text for you. The ‘official’ purpose for it is something like Check#, so consider that accordingly if you record check or bank transaction#s. For each split, there is also an Action field that can be used. By default it is a physically small column, but can hold more than one word. So you can have a single Utility transaction with splits for each property. Read the earlier reply I sent in response to Adrian. I outline a basic method for tagging info and how to filter or search for it with reports. You could use Unit#s or street names, etc. as your tags. Note, this won’t give you a P with breakouts as-is. It will allow you to run a P for each property separately. If you want a combination or break-out style report, you’ll need to run the reports that get you the data, then export to a spreadsheet app and re-combine them from there. (or code the reports from scratch) What you are looking for is possible, just not obvious. (even from the docs) Regards, Adrien > On Jun 21, 2020 w26d173, at 2:18 PM, Zi via gnucash-user > wrote: > > Hi > > I've used QuickBooks for years and am seriously considering finding a > (*non*web based) alternative. Re: [GNC] QUESTION: transaction classes (tags) like QuickBooks?
While there is no official ‘class’ or ’tag’ facility, you can still accomplish this somewhat. You can do searches on any text located in any text field, Description, Memo, Notes, Action, Num, etc. Thus you can create your own tagging system using # or @ if you like. (or any other symbol or even emoji as those are now supported) Most reports have a Filter option where you can only report transactions that match (or exclude) the Filter text. Unfortunately, the report filtering only works for Description, Notes, and Memo fields. Both Edit > Find & (report) Options > Filter allow regular expressions. -- Concerning the ‘finding files’ threads, those all have been user issues. GnuCash hasn’t been eating data. (though you should always have a backup available for *any* important data for *any* app.) I’ve been stepping through 3.0-3.10 and with the exception of a display discrepancy back at 3.1, I haven’t had any major issues. (plenty of small, minor bugs, but that is to be expected, and most of them were quickly fixed after reporting) Of course, upgrade at your own pace. I believe the official policy is to support the current and most recent major version. So after 4.0 is out only the 3.x series will continue to be ’supported’ but I don’t think you’ll see any additional 3.x releases to fix bugs. The wiki has more info on this. Re: [GNC] QUESTION: transaction classes (tags) like QuickBooks?
Zi, Welcome to the world of GnuCash. As a user of GnuCash for nearly 15 years, I can tell you that it's a feature-rich application with a great user community. Unfortunately, "classes" is not one of those features. It has been discussed for as long as I can remember (e.g., https://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-user/2001-October/002612.html, https://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-user/2007-July/020856.html, https://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-user/2010-December/037498.html), and users have an established request for it to be added (see https://gnucash.uservoice.com/forums/101223-feature-request/suggestions/1543027-transaction-classifications). The developers are aware of these requests and discussions, but have not to date found time to implement the feature. Since this is a volunteer-run open source project, we accept both the limitations of the program and the input of interested parties who may be able to add a given feature such as this to the program. Examining the threads through the years will yield a number of workarounds that users have cobbled together. Despite its limitations, GnuCash remains for me a powerful and useful program. I heartily recommend it. David T. Re: [GNC] QUESTION: transaction classes (tags) like QuickBooks?
Hi Zi, I was a QB user as well and have recently switched to Gnucash... I have tried splitting expenses claims like Quit Rent & Assessment as an expense claim but split into Quit Rent and Assessment as separate Expenses in P & L... The one thing which I have trouble with is the General Ledger which QB lists the opening and closing balances and all the transactions in between for individual ledger accounts... In Gnucash, you won't get that but the argument is we enter data using a double entry procedure, so *assuming that the transactions are entered correctly,* the opening and closing balance should be reflected in the Account Tree or Balance Sheet... As I am not super confident that the transactions are entered correctly, I do have a problem with this... As Gnucash is still under development, there are a lot of updates and I am hearing of people having difficulties in locating their files after updating... I think the current version is 3.10 and I am on 3.x... I have this fear of updating to 3.10... Maybe I will do it after my auditors confirmed that they have got everything they need... Column width handling in gnucash 3.9x has been completely redesigned. You can no longer save column widths for individual registers (unless you keep that register open permanently). Instead you can set default column widths per register class. You do so by first setting the column widths as you prefer and then use the Window menu to save the default column widths. [GNC] New version does not retain resized columns
Hi all, Just installed GnuCash 3.906 on Windows 10 and find that it doesn't retain the accounts column widths. I set the widths by double clicking each column's header and then pulling the left most Transfer column limiter to the left and let it snap back. This it has the desired effect of resizing the columns so that all digits appear but when I close and open the account it has reverted back to the old widths. Any clues please?
