Re: [GNC] Unexpected change in reconcile status

2020-09-01 Thread Christopher Lam
The reconcile-status being reset when editing past transactions'
description/notes/memo was a change that was later reverted, although I
cannot find the exact release.

In latest releases, reconcile-status is reset only when editing split's
account & amount IIRC.

Re: [GNC] Unexpected change in reconcile status

2020-09-01 Thread John Angelico
Michael and Janet,

I would consider this to be a logical consequence of editing a transaction
(and potentially changing the amount).

In commercial packages like Quicken/Reckon, MYOB, Xero et al, the same
applies. Other packages don't allow you to change a completed transaction -
you must do a correcting entry to fix some error.

As long as you are aware of the behaviour, you can re-reconcile the
transaction once you have finished editing.

It's mainly a surprise later, when we forget to do that, at the time.

Any tracking of value that you might do would be mere speculation. Even
an appraisal is no indication of how much your house is really worth:
both when I moved earlier this year both houses' appraisals were about
20% different from the selling price.

Valuing assets on a balance sheet at somebody's guess of what they're
worth, known as "writing to market", is part of shady accounting
practices and, if I'm not mistaken, partly responsible for the real
estate crash of 2008-2011. Don't do it!

And of course for tax purposes, as you indicated, you _have_ to work
from actual costs, not from guesses about value. Keeping your books on a
cost basis will make that less difficult when you make out your tax returns.

Re: [GNC] Crash attempting to import transactions from CSV on W10

2020-09-01 Thread A Harvey
Thanks for your responses.

To David Carlson: I have taken advantage of the GNC feature that allows me
to save the format for the CSV files. I have one for each institution that
I import from and haven't changed them, so I don't think it is a date
format problem. Also, thanks for the info on the nightly builds. I
suspected they are work in progress.

To David H.: GNC 4.1 works fine for me, and as you advise I will stick
with that until the next release.. I often try the nightly builds as I
sometimes find changes that are useful to me. Just thought I should
mention that I had the problem with the more recent ones.

To John Ralls: I will add it to the bug reports in case it may turn out to
be helpful to the developers.

Thanks again,
-Arthur

Re: [GNC] Asset accounts: cost, or value?

2020-09-01 Thread David Carlson
Nobody knows the value of a fixed asset like a house other than the buyer
when he makes an offer. This includes GnuCash. There are ways to trick
GnuCash into showing what your tax assessor or Zillow might estimate, but
it would be a lot of work to manually update your estimates from time to
time.

Arthur,

This really isn't the right place. Please file a bug report
(https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_I_think_I_found_a_bug._How_do_I_report_it.3F).
 It's way too easy for reports on the mailing list to get lost. Do keep in mind
that GnuCash is developed and maintained entirely by a very few volunteers and
while we like to know about every crasher (especially new ones in nightly
builds) we have nowhere near enough time to respond in detail to every report.

Re: [GNC] Location of gtk css file on MacOS

2020-09-01 Thread John Ralls
As long as you haven't messed with anything the two documented locations are:
~/Library/Application Support/Gnucash/gtk-3.0.css
~/Library/Application Support/Gnucash/config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css

The second is because GnuCash.app/Contents/Resources/etc/gnucash/environment
sets XDG_CONFIG_HOME to $HOME/Library/Application Support/Gnucash/config.

Documentation aside, older versions of Gtk would look in other places for
backwards compatibility, like ~/.config/gtk-3.0 and ~/.gtk-3.0, and
~/.themes/Adwaita. You might to a global search for files named gtk.css to make
sure that there isn't a leftover somewhere overriding the one you want to use.

[GNC] Asset accounts: cost, or value?

2020-09-01 Thread Marcus Winston
I'm working on tracking asset values, costs, capital gains, and such, in
GnuCash. Specifically for my house (primary residence). I've sold one
house, and own a second. I have created some accounts for this:

Assets:Fixed assets:House1
Assets:Fixed assets:House2
Liabilities:Mortgage
Income:Capital Gains:House
Expenses:Asset Purchase
Expenses:Asset Sell

I had thought that the Assets:Fixed assets:House would reflect the value of
the house. But after putting the purchase price of the house, and then
adding the costs to purchase (recording fees, appraisal, etc), I conclude
that the House account actually reflects the total cost of the house, and
not necessarily its value. First question: is that a correct view of the
Assets:Fixed assets:House1 account?

Since I've sold that house, I can add the costs-to-sell to the basis of
that house, and from there, calculate capital gains. And it's this that
leads me to think that the House1 asset account reflects the cost of the
house, and not the value of the house.

MW

Hi Arthur,

You sent it to the right place :-)

4.1 is the current version, what exactly do you mean by maintenance builds
? If you mean nightly builds yeah expect things to get buggered up
sometimes so if it's a problem for you I suggest you go back to the stable
release and stay there.

Cheers David H

Re: [GNC] Fwd: Crash attempting to import transactions from CSV on W10

2020-09-01 Thread David Carlson
Be sure to set the date format on the import page to match the format used
in your csv file before you try to import. This is a known issue going
back a long time. I thought that the current release had been modified to
address this issue, but apparently not. I cannot check it from here.

Regarding maintenance builds, they may or may not work properly, but they
are available for testing. Of course, try them first on disposable copies
of your data.

[GNC] Fwd: Crash attempting to import transactions from CSV on W10

2020-09-01 Thread A Harvey
Hi,
I sent the forwarded message below about a dozen days ago but have received
no comments. I know everyone is busy and it may take some time for anyone
to reply. In the interim, I would like to ask two quick meta-questions if
I may:

1) Did I send this message to the wrong list and, if so, to where should I
send it?

2) Should I expect that the maintenance builds are likely to break parts of
Gnucash that previously worked?

Thanks,

Hi,
I'm getting a crash when I try to import transactions from a CSV and
am hoping someone can help. Here are the gory details.

OS is Windows 10.
Gnucash version gnucash-4.1-2020-08-01-git-4.1-12-g12ab85fa6+   works fine.
All subsequent versions through ...08-15... show the following behavior:
Upon attempting to import transactions from a CSV, the import assistant
works correctly up to the page where it should show the results of the
import mapping and allow certain fields to be modified. When I click on
NEXT to get to that page, the application crashes.

I ran a trace with --debug and --extra for both the working and non-working
versions and compared them. Near the end of the miles of output, the
non-working version trace file contained the following:
.
.
* 16:15:16  INFO  [xaccAccountGetBalanceInCurrency]  baln=0/1
* 16:15:58  INFO  [GncTxImport::update_pre_trans_props] User
warning: Date could not be understood.
Value can't be parsed into a date using the selected date format.
* 16:15:58  INFO  [GncTxImport::update_pre_trans_props] User
warning: Date could not be understood.
Value can't be parsed into a date using the selected date format.
* 16:15:58  INFO  [GncTxImport::update_pre_split_props] User
warning: Deposit could not be understood.
Value doesn't appear to contain a valid number.
* 16:15:58  INFO  [GncTxImport::update_pre_trans_props] User
warning: Date could not be understood.
Value can't be parsed into a date using the selected date format.
* 16:15:58  INFO  [GncTxImport::update_pre_split_props] User
warning: Deposit could not be understood.
Value doesn't appear to contain a valid number.
* 16:15:58  INFO  [GncTxImport::update_pre_trans_props] User
warning: Date could not be understood.
Value can't be parsed into a date using the selected date format.
* 16:15:58  INFO  [GncTxImport::update_pre_split_props] User
warning: Deposit could not be understood.
Value doesn't appear to contain a valid number.
* 16:16:28  INFO  [qof_event_generate_internal] id=6
hi=1345f788 han=66630812 data=
* 16:16:28  INFO  [qof_event_generate_internal] id=4

Any suggestions?

[GNC] new tool for Interactive Gnucash reports in Dash

2020-09-01 Thread Joel Aufrecht
Hello,

Announcing Ledger Explorer, which provides Gnucash Cash Flow and Balance
Sheet interactive graphs with drilldown to individual transactions. (
Screenshots
).
It's built on Dash, reads Gnucash CSV transaction exports, is GPL, and
is available
for alpha-testing . It
includes a Gnucash sample data set (CSV
,
XML
)
which some may find useful for other purposes.

Details
As a long-time Gnucash user for household accounting, I have struggled to
get useful planning information back out. Some of this is because of
Gnucash's reporting limitations, but just as much is because of garbage
in→garbage out problems. An anomalous value in a report may be meaningful,
or it may be caused by miscategorized transactions. Navigating through the
account ledgers, searching, and filtering all require multiple steps (menu
clicks, menu selections, dialog boxes, etc) for almost any action.

I built a new report using Dash because it's a F/OSS interactive data
visualization tool that is cross-platform (browser-based) and requires only
Python (and CSS and HTMLish). The graphical elements include a bar chart
time series for transactions by month, quarter, or year, so it's easy to
select one month or a few months of data. This opens a sunburst control
showing the total $s, and clicking part of the sunburst drills into
sub-accounts, with no depth limit. It also loads all selected transactions
for the accounts and sub-accounts and selected date range into a table.
The table has instantaneous sorting, filtering, and pagination in one place
with no menu commands or separate dialogs needed. Hence the name: Ledger
Explorer.

Questions, suggestions, complaints, and code all welcome,

Joel

Re: [GNC] Register Column Widths

2020-09-01 Thread David H
Stop looking :-)

As per John R after 4.1 release...

The type-group defaults are only for Invoices, Bills, Vouchers, and Credit
Notes. All other registers behave as they did in 3.10, though you may need
to use Time Machine to bring back your $GNC_DATA_HOME/books/foo.gcm if it
got messed up by 3.906.

See https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash/pull/743 for our discussion and
resolution.

Cheers David H.

[GNC] Register Column Widths

2020-09-01 Thread David T. via gnucash-user

Hi,

Could anyone tell me the current status on the storage of saved register
column widths? I was under the impression that there was a change made
somewhat recently to the the logic of how GNC stored column widths for
different registers.

Previously, register column widths were stored on an account-by-account
basis; the new system stored only a single setting for all accounts of a
given type, and users had to actively save the column width settings for
a given account type. There was a bit of discussion about where in the
menus the column save feature was to be found. However, I have looked in
every menu and submenu I could think of (File->Properties,
Edit->Preferences, View, and Windows, to name a few), and I cannot see
this save option. Searches of Bugzilla, the lists, and Git failed to
turn up information that would inform me, so I turn to the list for
assistance.

If this feature is still present in GNC4.1 on Windows, how am I to save
a given set of column widths?

TIA,

David T.

I cannot address the Windows 10 monitor handling issue, but if you believe
that the import issue is the one covered by
https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=797593, then you may need to
massage the OFX file in a text editor prior to import unless that
enhancement request get into the program. I see that GnuCash will not see
the massaged import files unless you keep the OFX/QFX suffix after
massaging it

[GNC] Problems with a new installation

2020-09-01 Thread Eric H. Bowen via gnucash-user
I've been using Gnucash under Windows 10 and Linux for a couple of years
now with no real issues. However, when I attempted to install the
program (4.0) for my father's use on his Windows 10 laptop I ran into a
couple of very frustrating issues.

The first: Dad's 88. To ease the strain on his eyes he has a large
external monitor hooked up to his laptop, and that external monitor is
designated as his main monitor. However, when Gnucash was installed it
would only open on the much smaller built-in monitor on the laptop. Yes,
I can drag the screen across to the main monitor, but any and every
action...reconciliation, import of transactions, even choosing an action
from a drop-down menu...opens up on the small laptop screen. I haven't
found any way to force these windows onto the main monitor. It makes the
program virtually unusable.

Another issue was the import of transactions. His credit union offers
.QFX downloads, which import into Gnucash. However, the debits appear as
credits and the credits appear as debits. I know how to resolve this
problem with .CSV imports, but I've never had this issue importing .QFX
and I'm not sure how to correct it.

Thanks for any assistance.

Google search works pretty well, especially if you add
site:lists.gnucash.org to your search parameters.

We don't have a "forum", we have a mailing list that has been around for
more than 20 years.

Issue 1:

I think that this should affect the selected texts.
When we give 2 or 3 clicks on the text it is highlighted by two colors, the
text color and the background color.
We would really like to be able to change these colors.

Which Selectors/Rules can we change these colors with?

The closest I can see is a highlighted text field in a register
> like a memo. That gets a class:
>
> .gnc-class-register-foreground

I tested this:

.gnc-class-register-foreground {
  color:yellow;
}

and it works with the same effect as this:

/* The cell containing the cursor */
gnc-id-cursor entry {
  color:yellow
}

> #gnc-id-summarybar
> That still exists. It is a `box` node that is a child of another `box`
> node that has #gnc-id-register-page if that helps any.
>

This works well on the register page:

#gnc-id-summarybar {
  color: red;
}

Issue 2:

Why doesn't it work for the font size?

#gnc-id-summarybar {
  font-size: 18;
}

Which Selectors/Rules can we change the font size of the register page
summary bar with?

This affected the entire register page:

#gnc-id-register-page{
  color: red;
}

The 'Total Bar' on the Account page has:
> #gnc-id-account-summary-bar
>

I haven't found where it affects anything:

#gnc-id-account-summary-bar{
  color: red;
}

(which is a child of #gnc-id-account-page if you find that useful)
>
> > #account_tree
> #gnc-id-account-tree
>

I haven't found where it affects anything:

#gnc-id-account-page{
  color: red;
}

or

#account_tree{
  color: red;
}

But this works like a charm:

#gnc-id-account-tree{
  color: red;
}

And we were looking forward to this skill !

Under that is a `header` node which contains a `button` node for each
> possible column header. (visible or not) Each of those contains `box`

Adrien, I am so pleased with the results that I forgive you for all the
excesses of text you made me read before !!!
hehehehehhe. . . !!!

To close the subject and to have a good styling CSS file again (I will
publish the final result here), we just need to solve these two issues:

Issue 1: Look above
Issue 2: Look above

Thanks Adrien!
