I think that it has been odd like that at least since release 2.4.x.

Is there any note in the GnuCash help indicating that column widths and
open window information are apparently only made persistent or persistently
updated if the user selects File > Quit or selects the red x which is in
the upper right corner of the GnuCash window in most operating system
desktops but only if the Save icon on the upper left end of the menubar is

Doing a save as to a different file name saves the prefs
 in C:\Users\<>\AppData\Roaming\GnuCash\books under the NEW
FILE NAME - this probably unsets the flag to say the prefs have changed so
when you come back and save the file again under the original file name it
doesn't try to save the prefs there as well. Have a look in your
 C:\Users\<>\AppData\Roaming\GnuCash\books folder - you'll
probably have a gnucash.gcm file there from your last save as backup file
 details ???

If I were you I would change my workflow and save under the real file
name and quit Gnucash which will save your prefs for the real file and then
copy the gnucash data file to your backup location and your problem should
go away :-) You should look at backing up your preferences and saved
reports as well so it makes more sense to have a separate backup strategy
which copies these files to your backup location - see wiki for what files
 to back up at
 https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_How_do_I_backup_my_GC_environment.2C_including_preferences.3F

There are programs out there to copy files to backup locations at the
press of a button or when they detect changes or on a schedule - I use
FreeFile Sync, but there's others like Rsync, Syncthing - so you might want
to take a look at those.

The usual default settings are 'Left - Button 1', 'Right - Button 2'
and 'Middle - button 3'. Many systems will emulate button 3 with a
simultaneous press of buttons 1 and 2.

Using File/Quit did in fact save the settings so I'm good to go. I do have
a backup strategy too - SyncBack Pro syncs 3 PCS on LAN. Does backup to 2
external HDs. And use BackBlaze for cloud storage. I get a bit anal about
the financial files so I even do the SaveAs too!!

As I understand it, in the X windowing system button 1 is the left
button, button 2 is the middle button, and button 3 is the right
button. These assignments can be changed in the config files.
Unfortunately this does not seem to fit the manual well.

That's certainly my understanding in the Linux world if the original
reference was actually to mouse buttons and not on-screen buttons.

Re: [GNC] Make PDF from reports

2020-10-23 Thread Adrien Monteleone
And for those using a distro that doesn't include PDF printing out of
the box, the cups-pdf package should do it. (old Ubuntu distros used to
not include it so I always got in the habit of making it one of my first
installs)

Adrien

Nice to know about the htmltopdf package. On Ubuntu, the closest I found

But Ubuntu does have Print to PDF built in, and it works great. I'll be
using my Ubuntu system more often than the Windows 7 in the long run
anyway.

Thanks

Derek

Re: [GNC] Button1 & Button2

2020-10-23 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Hmm... Thanks, didn't think of that context. The documentation
definitely needs improvement then, because it is not clear that
'Button1/Button2' refers to the mouse or trackpad and *not* buttons one
is supposed to see on the screen. The doc reads as if it is telling you
'where', rather than 'what', to click.

Adrien
