Yes. In my own message I meant 'shortcut' (as opposed to 'bookmark').

Re: [GNC] File browser file type filter and bookmarks

2022-04-20 Thread John Layman
I have a similar situation to yours, only running on windows. My GnuCash books
are called simply 'Business' and 'Personal' and are stored in the same
location. I created separate bookmarks to launch GnuCash for each. That makes
it a simple matter to have both books open at the same time. That's especially
handy in situations such as a funds transfer for capital contribution or draw
where the transaction requires corresponding entries in both books.

Thanks Gyle,

But I'm not trying to save the file I'm trying to open it. So I have one
gnucash file I'm working with and I want to open a different one. So it's the
file "open" rather than "save" dialog that I'm looking at.

Be careful to switch back to the "primary" file after doing that, otherwise the
primary will become the snapshot and new work will go into the new file.

No it doesn't, I didn't think it did.

If you "Save As", for example, 'fred.gc' what you get is a file called
'fred.gc.gnucash'. (This is on Linux by the way where filenames can
have as many dots as you want in them)

I just run incremental backups of all important/significant files in

James, one way of dealing with this is to make changes to your user
menu on Linux.
Not that I remember how to do it, because it has been working for many
years on my desktop, survives upgrades and so on.

My menu, under "Office" has
Gnucash
Gnucash Business
Gnucash Home
Gnucash Super
Gnucash Trust

You didn't say which desktop environment you are using, so more
specific advice would need that data.

Re: [GNC] File browser file type filter and bookmarks

2022-04-20 Thread Adrien Monteleone
The File menu has a 'recent files' list at the bottom. That gets
populated on each File > Open of a different file. (or the same file in
a different location)

You only need to do File > Open once per file, and then afterwards, just
select it from the list. GnuCash remembers where it saved it, so no need
for changes to the File dialog.

You can also set up desktop shortcuts that open different specific
files. I think that info should be on the Wiki, but if not, you can find
it here in the list archives. The key is to specify the file to open in
your 'exec' command line of your .desktop file.

Adrien

for me

1. The ability to filter on file extension

I find that both on Windows 11 and Linux Mint the browser shows all the
gnucash log files as well (which have similar start names). The actual
account file just ends in ".gnucash". It would be great if there were a
place where a file extension filter could be set to just show the files
with this extension. And, even better, if it could default to .gnucash?

Is this a development request or is there some setting I could change
that would allow this?

2. The ability to see file browser bookmarks on Linux Mint

This may be a rather more OS-specific topic but I use gnucash on Linux
Mint and I've set up bookmarks in the file explorer application that
allow me to quickly navigate to folders on my drive. These are mounted

show up in the gnucash file browser but on Linux Mint these bookmarks

file system. If anyone has any tips as to how to make these mounts /
bookmarks show up in the "root" of the file browser window that would
also be of great help.
