Cmake was building files in my gnucash git clone directory.  I ended up
having to destroy and download a whole new clone.  That seems to have
fixed whatever strange problem cmake was having.   Make is currently
compiling and I hope that finishes here in the next few minutes.

I'll have to pull up the git docs and figure out what your command line
does and why it might be needed.

Re: [GNC] N00b accounting q: opening balances

2022-04-30 Thread Michael or Penny Novack

On 4/30/2022 10:32 AM, John Edward Hynes wrote

Hi list,I’m very new to accounting and gnucash.  In setting up a hypothetical business, I have a question about opening balances:I entered $1000 in the equity opening balances account, transfer to current assets checking.  I also added the savings opening balance, and machinery starting book value, in the same way.Shouldn’t the open balances equity zero out after appearing in the “target” accounts correctly?  There’s no imbalance, everything looks fine, except that opening equity account doesn’t decrease.  Should it, or is this normal? Thanks!

Like Gyle said.

BUT I will add that since you appear new to double entry bookkeeping you
should not skip over reading/understanding the tutorial and even better
would be reading a "bookkeeping 101" type text. We can help you with the
"how" but you need at least some idea of the :what" you are doing.

Gnucash is automating what was once a pen and ink on paper process and
further, providing a shortcut for the simplest (but usually the vast
majority) transactions << no need to enter first in the "journal"* >>
And when you ARE entering journal style does the "posting" for you <<
this was a very error prone process in the days of manual bookkeeping >>

BTW1 -- kudos to you for setting up this "test" business entity as a way
of learning how to use gnucash.

BTW2 -- Examples in a text will probably not show starting with "opening
balances" but instead will show "opening transaction(s)". You can do
this with gnucash also. Ignore specifying any opening balances creating
your CoA with all accounts zero and then opening the books with opening
transaction(s).

Michael D Novack

* -- you WILL in effect be using "journal entry" when entering a "split"
transaction although this is more of a "view" since the journal is
virtual. IF you are looking at a bookkeeping text to learn from, you CAN
choose this view even for all transactions (even the simple ones) to
mimic examples in your chosen text when they are showing entering into
the journal << but "posting" you can forget about, THAT is one of the
things gnucash is automating >>

Re: [GNC] N00b accounting q: opening balances

2022-04-30 Thread Gyle McCollam
In double entry accounting you have a Debit and a Credit for each transaction.
In your case you debited your Checking account and credited Equity, you didn't
actually "transfer" the money. Same goes for savings and machinery. The

Seems like you did everything correctly.

Hi list,I’m very new to accounting and gnucash. In setting up a
hypothetical business, I have a question about opening balances:I entered $1000
in the equity opening balances account, transfer to current assets checking. I
also added the savings opening balance, and machinery starting book value, in
the same way.Shouldn’t the open balances equity zero out after appearing in the
“target” accounts correctly? There’s no imbalance, everything looks fine,
except that opening equity account doesn’t decrease. Should it, or is this
normal?Thanks!

Re: [GNC] Documentation changes needed

2022-04-30 Thread David T. via gnucash-user

Frank,

I disagree with your assertion regarding placing transitory information
(such as the current state of the installation process of Finance::Quote
on Macos) into documentation rather than the wiki. There's an
installation page on the wiki for just that reason.

But this is just another example that demonstrates why I gave up trying
to help manage the documentation: the fact that when push comes to
shove, it's Frank's way that holds final sway on how the documentation
turns out. I thank you, Frank, for reminding me of that. I'll drop out
of this discussion now. Good luck, Phillip; I hope it goes well.

So I will only add a few notes here.

Gnucash uses Bugzilla (bugs.gnucash.org) to suggest enhancements and fix bugs,
and the documentation has its own section there. You will find that there are
numerous documentation bugs and enhancements outstanding there.

There is also a good bit of information on the wiki on how changes to the
documentation are created, edited, submitted, and approved. See, for example,
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Documentation_Improvement. Any rewrites you do
will of necessity follow those guidelines.

I'll note that the Gnucash documentation also includes the Help Manual-- and
that information about Gnucash's use can also reside there. There has been a
longstanding difference of opinion about what information should go into the
Guide versus the Help, and there are areas that duplicate information.

As for the bifurcation between the Tutorial and Concepts within the Guide, I
think that early writers focused on the Tutorial side of things, whereas later
authors (myself included) have focused more on the concepts side. How that all
turns out is certainly open for discussion.

As for specifics, updates from a fresh perspective are welcome. I'll admit I
haven't given the Guide a close read for a while now.

Your comments about Finance::Quote, however, I'd suggest fit better as wiki
material. Getting stock quotes, while certainly a useful proposition in a
financial system, are technically outside of the formal accounting. Also, there
are plenty of ways to get valuations without F::Q. Furthermore, Macos users
constitute only a portion of the Gnucash user base, and OS-specific
instructions like yours have been addressed in the wiki much more effectively.
So, on the whole, I'd put those on the wiki. You might have a look at
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Online_Quotes

No, we consider the wiki —besides collecting stuff that goes beyond the
scope— more as a temporary storage, where improvements are easier
developed. Setting up F::Q belongs to the manual
https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash-docs/pull/248/files

Let me know if you have questions.

Ah. Yes, I'm afraid I'm still using GnuCash 3.8+; It's What's For Dinner
(at least on Ubuntu! [Studio 20.04 LTS]). They don't ever seem to update
their distributions until a major release comes along...and even then
they're a few versions behind.

I tried Flatpak once but had some issues (not necessarily traceable to
Flatpak) and ended up having to reinstall the Ubuntu Studio OS from
scratch.

Eric,

The 'Append' button is a fairly recently added feature, probably around
release 4.6 or thereabouts. If you are still using an older version
perhaps

you should update GnuCash.

Most likely you're using the SQL backend, and it sounds like you might not
have the right SQL Drivers installed on Debian. If you're using SQLite,
then make sure you have the dbi dbd sqlite driver installed.

I had tried a Reinstall from Synaptic but that didn't help. I've tried

Re: [GNC] Setting currency on share accounts

2022-04-30 Thread Phillip Duff
Hi,

Thanks for your responses.
Leaving aside the semantics of whether the real-life situation is that the
stocks are held in brokerage accounts or otherwise, I see the way this is done.
It is not of course obvious that child accounts take on the currency of the
parent. I would certainly like to see something in the solution which indicates
this. The security currency field should be two separate fields (there is
plenty published that one field should never be used to represent two different
artefacts), for the simple reason that the use of the field can never be
intuitively determined.

Then what we would see is, that the currency field for a child account would
show in a read-only field the currency of the parent, making it intuitive. The
security field should then be used as it is today.

That would solve the problem. The best documentation is no documentation
wherever possible, and this change would resolve it.

Thanks for your responses. Its easy to change what I have done already

Cheers Phil

[GNC] Minor issue that's becoming an irritant...

2022-04-30 Thread Christopher Chase
Hi,

I'm a brand new user to GnuCash. I have a 3 monitor setup and GnuCash
*INSISTS* on opening on the left monitor. It seems like a minor issue, but
it's getting really annoying.

I'm using Windows 10. I've googled how to get an app to open on a specific
monitor, but it doesn't work. I've verified which monitor is primary for
Windows. I've uninstalled GnuCash, deleted every hidden directory and file
I could find in AppData, cleaned out the registry, etc., even disconnected
the other monitors before reinstalling. Once I reconnect all the monitors,
GnuCash opens on the left monitor. I don't have this problem with any
other app.
