Re: [GNC] Calculation of Unrealized Losses

2022-05-02 Thread David Carlson
Bill,

If I recall correctly, one or more of the methods GnuCash uses to calculate
exchange rates for reports is technically not correctly defined , so it
obscures the fact that it is not calculating the expected value. That is
leading to strange results when, for example, one attempts to do a trial
balance. I know very little about accounting so I cannot tell you details
about that.

Some of the developers can help with some of those issues. Hopefully they
can at least tell you which calculation methods to avoid when you want
accurate results .

Can anyone help me with this?

Do I have to supply more/different information?

I have been using gnucash personally for a couple of years now and would
like to develop more confidence in the program.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Re: [GNC] Issues with Payables

2022-05-02 Thread Adrien Monteleone
How are you entering these payments? That should be done with the
'Process Payments' feature where you select the document (bill/invoice)
to be paid, enter a payment amount, and select the source/destination
account.

For existing transactions you can right-click them and choose Edit
Payment to assign it properly.

If you are importing the payment transactions you'll have to 'Edit
Payment' for each one after import.

Welcome to GnuCash, Sandra!

One of the things about GnuCash is that it forces you to work in the
structure of double-entry bookkeeping. Other accounting programs seek to
provide a simplified, but maybe less powerful, structure. Not GnuCash.
Thus, good foundations for finding your way in GnuCash are:

1. The GnuCash Tutorial and Concepts Guide
. Read it
all the way through.

2. An introductory textbook on accounting and double-entry bookkeeping.
In particular, the idea that each transaction is balanced, and the
essence of the accounting equation.

3. An accountant who knows the rules for your jursidiction, and can give
you advice on strategies and structures.

When you have those, then a good next step is the GnuCash wiki. Many
little bits of advice and methods are captured here. In particular, have
a look at the page, "Quickstart Australian BAS"
.

When further questions arise — and they will — come on back here and see
if we can help you more.

I just noticed that ctrl-click does not add or remove single accounts in
the account selection window for reports in release 3.8 on Linux but
shift-click will extend or release the range of a group selection. Odd!

Re: [GNC] Tab in Reconcile window

2022-05-02 Thread Tommy Trussell
I have found that a recent update to the GTK3 Yaru theme GnuCash was using
on my Ubuntu system made a HUGE difference in being able to see the
highlighting. Not just in GnuCash but also in the PDF viewer. (But NOT in
the file manager, for some reason.)

I presume the theme(s) might also have been updated on Fedora, though maybe
the theme updates are a lower priority than security issues and haven't
come through yet?
