Ah, yes, good point - a backup is similar to what I'm looking for.
Thank you.

Re: [GNC] Fwd: Double entry directly to Equity

2022-05-08 Thread Bogdan
Well, actually my question is not an accounting question but rather a
technical one on how to set up and use equity accounts in Gnucash, if at
all possible (I'm a qualified accountant by the way). I took a revaluation
reserve just as an example.

In many accounting frameworks you can find items that affect equity
directly rather than through Profit and Loss / Retained Earnings.

For example, if you account for Property at fair value through P&L (so
called "investment property") you would reflect an unrealized gain in
market value as :

Dr Asset Cr Income (you equity increases because your net income / retained
earnings increase)

However, if you use a revaluation model for the Property and mark it to
market you would do:

Dr Asset Cr Reserve account

A Reserve account is an equity account (as much as Retained Earnings is an
equity account). This gain doesn't go through P&L and doesn't affect your
income and expenses but it does increase your equity / capital directly
through the reserve account (where it's reflected on the asset side - the
property account or counter-account is beyond the point).

So I guess I am just wondering how to create an equity account in Gnucash.
I used to set up these accounts as sub-accounts in the Trading account but
now when I'm trying to make an entry directly to such a sub-account in
Trading (e.g. Dr Asset Cr Trading) the Trading account changes to Imbalance
automatically. Is there a workaround or is there a way to fix it?

Thanks!

That's easy. In the Accounts Tab, right click on the top level Equity account to
select it and then right click anywhere in the pane and select New Account from
the popup menu or use Actions->New Account from the mainmenu. This should start
the dialogue with Equity as the parent account, enter the name "Revaluation
Reserve", select the account currency and add any other detail (opening balance
if non zero etc.) . At the bottom the Parent account should show as Equity. (You
can select any other Equity account as parent depending upon your heirarchy in
Equity). Click OK and you have an equity account which you can the use as the
other split in transactions recording the changes in asset value.

[GNC] Large GnuCash file very slow to write to

2022-05-08 Thread Tim Hume via gnucash-user
Hi,

My GnuCash file (SQLite format) has become rather large - 110 MBytes. Every
month or two I import a lot more transactions in CSV format. I use piecash in a
Python script I wrote, because the importing of CSV data built into GnuCash
crashes when I import too many transactions.

I might be importing perhaps 4000 or 5000 transactions. Saving them into my
GnuCash file takes many many minutes. I know my file is getting too large, but
it surely shouldn't take 10+ minutes to do this operation? Whilst I do it, I
can see Python is taking 100% of a CPU core.

Come the end of the financial year (30 June) I'm going to start a new file. But
this will quickly grow in size, and no doubt I'll run into this problem again.
Is there anything I can do to speed this up, or do I just have to live with it?

Cheers,

Tim.

I don’t believe the file is getting too large. If you haven’t looked into using
an SSD drive at least for the database I highly recommend it. Not only will you
amazed at how fast data will be written to the file but also how fast you will
be able to generate reports.

Re: [GNC] Large GnuCash file very slow to write to

2022-05-08 Thread Tim Hume via gnucash-user
It is an SSD drive (I'm using a Mac Mini about one year old - with the M1 chip).

The slow part seems to be saving the database - inserting the transactions is
fast enough, the save operation is what takes so long. It may be 20 minutes - I
haven't timed it. Even closing GnuCash is slow - perhaps 30 seconds to a minute.

Re: [GNC] GnuCash 4.10

2022-05-08 Thread Gyle McCollam
Richard,
When you tried to update, did it tell you, you had to remove the old
installation of GnuCash? I know it does that before installing the new
version. Maybe there was an issue with the uninstall. I woould make sure you
have a backup, then try uninstalling the old version manually. After that try
installing again. This time there should be no uninstall attempted by GnuCash
and maybe it will install correctly. There is no logical reason why it
shouldn't work on Windows 11, as I said I have been using it since 4.10 came
out.

Thank You,

The exe file won’t open.

Will maybe have to start from scratch or wait for the next update.

Richard,

Sorry to hear you are having problems. I have been using 4.10 on Windows 11
with no issues. Is it not able to find your GnuCash file or is it not working
at all. If it is the former, use file open and explore to find your GnuCash
file. If it is the latter, I can't help you.

[GNC] Double entry directly to Equity

2022-05-08 Thread David Long
Hi, I just tested David's method of creating a new equity account and
crediting the revaluation to that account and debiting the asset account. I
did not attach the new Revaluation Reserve account to an existing equity
account (parent) but I specified it as a new top level account. Either way
works fine, and the revaluation reserve appears where it should on the
balance sheet report.

Cheers
David

Thanks!

2022-05-08 Thread john
Is this about your python program being slow or about GnuCash being slow? Note
that Piecash isn't GnuCash and we don't provide any support for it, nor
obviously can we provide any support for your program.

If it's a GnuCash problem, please provide more details about exactly what
you're doing and what step is taking 20 minutes.

Tim,
Also please mention what version of GnuCash you are presently using and a
little more about your OS environment such as size of your RAM and whether
it is nearly all used when you see your problem.

This question took longer to get resolved for you because of
misunderstanding.

You really had a gnucash question (and not a question about what could
or could not be put under equity). Gnucash is an AUTOMATION of standard
double entry bookkeeping and with one (for some us major/annoying)
exception* you can do anything you could working the old fashioned way
pen and ink on paper. So yes of course you can create accounts of type
equity. It';d be kind of hard to use for accounting for partnerships
(for example) if you couldn't set up :drawing" accounts for each partner.

IF you were opting to have all transactions entered "journal style"
(like you have to do for splits) it would be exactly like the old days
except "posting" would be automatic and error free and anything entered
out of balance immediately obvious.

My suggestion for anybody experienced doing bookkeeping the old
fashioned way is that IF they are confused by/have trouble with any of
the "shortcuts" gnucash offers, simply don't use those at first. Thus I
set up books for entities without using the "opening balance" feature
(create accounts zero and instead open the books with a transaction just
like in the old days.

Michael D Novack

* The "business features" -- you can't ask for invoices to be produced
unless "accrual basis" with the invoiced amount a "receivable". That
annoys me because doing books for non-profits where often invoices are
wanted (like member dues) but these amounts are NOT receivable (there is
no obligation to renew). This is one of the reasons that many orgs push
"pledge of a monthly donation" and that set up to be automated. A
"pledge" IS legally/technically "receivable".

[GNC] Investment accounts - maintain ongoing balance only

2022-05-08 Thread Scott Soderling
I use GnuCash for all my personal finances. I have a number of "retirement"
investment accounts. I receive monthly multi-page statements for each
account from the bank, showing every transaction (buys/sells, interest,
dividends, capital gains, etc). Now that I'm a senior, I have to withdraw
monthly amounts from these accounts, which are transferred to a checking
account.

I really have no interest in tracking all that data in GnuCash. I can see
it all in the statements and/or through my online banking. What I am
interested in doing. create GnuCash accounts for each investment
account, so that I can enter transfer transactions each month to my
checking account. All I need to do in addition to that is update the
current value of the investment accounts, say as of the last day of each
month.

Opening the investment accounts and giving them opening balances is easy.
I'm now looking for suggestions going forward regarding updating the
current value of each account monthly. That is, I don't want to set up sub
accounts for every stock, mutual fund, etc and then have to track
share/unit prices, just to come up with an account balance. I just want to
enter one "adjustment" type transaction for each investment account, once a
month, to make it balance to my monthly bank statements.

Appreciate all ideas... thanks!

2022-05-08 Thread Derek Atkins
If you just want to keep the value balance, then you can just use a
regular asset account and every month (or quarter, or however often) enter
a "balance update" transaction for whatever gains/losses you achieved that
month/quarter/etc. Note that this will combine realized and unrealized
gains, so you won't necessarily be able to use that change in value for
tax purposes. but it'll get you what you want.

Debit to Assets:Investment Account
Credit to Income:Investment Gains and Losses

(Some people, me among them, would put Investment Gains and Losses under
Equity rather than Income. I do this because investment gains and losses
can exceed the total of all ordinary income and expenses in a given
month; also, I budget my income and expenses but not investment gains
and losses, which are unpredictable. Since these adjusting transactions
are for your benefit and not your accountant's, you can do whatever
feels natural to you.)

Re: [GNC] Investment accounts - maintain ongoing balance only

2022-05-08 Thread Michael or Penny Novack

Equity rather than Income. I do this because investment gains and losses
can exceed the total of all ordinary income and expenses in a given
month; also, I budget my income and expenses but not investment gains
and losses, which are unpredictable. Since these adjusting transactions
are for your benefit and not your accountant's, you can do whatever
feels natural to you.)

This is not quite an account vs non-accountant thing.

Two things to keep in mind. Accounts of "type" income or "type" expense
are actually accounts of fundamental type equity << the only REAL types
are asset, liability, and equity. In the earliest days of double entry
bookkeeping (we are talking about hundreds of years ago) there were no
":temporary" account of type income or expense. Then  somebody realized
that by (temporarily) doing the transactions against income and expense
additional useful information was to be had. Moved to equity by the
:close the books" process. Because software like gnucash can produce the
reports without "closing the books" we tend not to ever :close the
books" and so don;t  "see" the types income and expense as temporary.

So of course you can use equity as the other side. You also should
realize that this might be a very good way to go for "investments" where
the increase over time (the unrealized gains) will NEVER be realized <<
instead, the asset will be "converted" into something else or never
cashed in. In other words, you want the increase in value to bypass
income and go straight to equity. I'll give examples of both:

converted --- A "deferred annuity" (aka "retirement income" policy). The
little policies received each year from the employer (as retirement
benefit*) will be swapped for a single annuity by the carrier when you
retire. They are cash value policies, so you COULD track their increase
in value each year. The point here is that once converted no longer has
a cash value as such << yes it has value, could be marketed --- AND for
fair comparisons of equivalent net worth you MIGHT want to compute the
"present value of an annuity" but you could not market it for anything
like that fair worth. But leave that to somebody like me who knows how
to use actuarial tables (including which to use for this) >>

never cashed in --- a small business, especially a family farm, might
carry a "2nd death" policy on the owners. Again, not cashed in because
the whole point of this is to have the policy face value (plus
additions) available to buy out the shares of those heirs who will not
be involved with continuing the business. Mutual partner insurance is
similar (so the surviving partners can buy out the heirs of the deceased
partner). The whole point of THIS kind of insurance is to allow the
business to continue instead of having to be sold to satisfy the claims
of heirs.

* In other words, a "defined contribution" plan which is probably more
common these days than a "defined benefits pension" plan.

No problem at all.

Maybe try downgrading to 4.9 to see if the issue persists or not to help
find where the problem is.

Re: [GNC] Importing Accounts with non-English Characters

2022-05-08 Thread viking2ev
I downloaded v4.10, but the bug remains. It is still not possible to import
*accounts* using a CSV file (encoded in UTF-8) with non-English characters.
Is there any workaround? I read in the bug report that importing a CSV file
encoded in windows 1252 may work. However, I have no idea how to save my CSV
file using Excel and windows 1252 encoding.

Quite an old bug from 2017. Is there a workaround to be able to import accounts
with non-English characters?

I am also not able to /manually/ create a new account including non-English
characters. For example, the letter "å" can be typed here by pressing
"Alt-0229". However, it doesn't work when trying to type this letter in the
Account name for a New Account.
Is this another bug?

2022-05-08 Thread davidcousens49
Richard,

Just installed GnuCash 4.10 on my wife's Windows 11 laptop with no problems at
all using the msi installer from Sourceforge following the download link from
the GnuCash website. Starts, creates a new datafile and opens a copy of my
datafile from my Linux system without any problem.

It has to be something specific to your setup or a problem with the download.
Did you perhaps download the flatpak version and not have the flatpak setup.
It will help if you can provide us details of which version you downloaded and
from whay site.

What was your previously installed version - I know you said "from previous

from one of the versions took a little while to actually open a Gnucash

Re: [GNC] gnucash v 2.6.19 or newer on 32bit linux

2022-05-08 Thread Jonathan Francoeur
Hi David.  Thank you for asking.  I am using Linux Lite, Ubuntu 16.04
and GNU Cash 2.6.12 on the older machine.  As far as I know, I can not
install any newer version of Ubuntu on this 32bit machine.

Hi Adrien.  I'm kinda scared of attempting to build a newer version of
GNU Cash without knowing that someone else has done so successfully.
I'm not that good with computers and the list of dependencies looks
daunting to me.  Thank you for your suggestions none the less.

On 3/25/22 4:25 AM, David T. via gnucash-user wrote:

that he needed to use it.

Jonathan, does this imply that your older machine is running Ubuntu 16.04? The
Gnucash wiki says that 16.04 had 2.6.12, while 18.04 had 2.6.19. The vintage of
Ubuntu might affect your options here.

And if your older system has a version greater than 2.6.19 on it, something
else has gone wrong, and more info would be needed.

You can have some dependency issues on that old machine that might

I'd think you *should* be able to build 2.6.19 or 2.6.21 though. (2.6.21
was the last 2.6 version)

Please do report back what you are able to accomplish.

If nothing works, consider possibly using RDP or VNC to your 64bit
machine rather than a local install.

Adrien

See the instructions here:

You might also be able to use the Flatpak if you don't want to build.
(I'd try that first)
