Re: [GNC] GnuCash: What scheduled transactions can't do

2023-01-27 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
It seems to me that the OP is running up against the fact that GnuCash has
always been focused on Real, rather than Potential, transactions, since it
follows a more strict accounting perspective. Users encounter this with
Scheduled transactions; they encounter it with budgets; they encounter it with
unrealized gains. Each of these arises in the lists with regularity.

Since OP mentioned that having a reasonable estimated exchange rate would
suffice in their situation, BOTH of their asks could be addressed by setting
the scheduled transactions to create far into the future. The transactions
would then be real entries in the books, and all the usual reports could be
used to determine future amounts.

And yes, there are pitfalls with creating real transactions in the books that
may not actually get created, but that's a tradeoff.

Re: [GNC] Scheduled Transactions Window Sorting

2023-01-27 Thread David Carlson
Adrien M,

Are you able to sort transactions in the Since Last Run dialog as well as
in the Scheduled Transactions Editor? Are they still sorted the same way
the next time that you open the Scheduled Transactions Editor?

I think there may be some confusion about when the stickiness arises. I
think that it only arises in windows that are still open when the program
is shut down with Alt-F-Q, Ctrl-Q, and possibly clicking the upper right
red X in Windows or many Linux desktops. I have no knowledge about Apples.

With that in mind, I think that it would be a nice enhancement if there
were a way to make the attributes of the current window such as sort order,
window positions and column widths 'stick' in the same way in the user
settings as they do now when the program is closed, but without actually
closing the program. I think that this could be added in the right-click
menu for registers, possibly called Freeze Window Attributes.

If it were possible for gnucash to CORRECTLY predict what exchange rates

You don't change it in the Security Editor -- it is changed in the account.
(Right-click on the account, and select Edit to bring up the options). I
don't have GnuCash up at the moment, but from memory, the account type is
in the lower left area.

No, that's a great explanation... When I have the account set as a stock or

Re: [GNC] GnuCash: What scheduled transactions can't do

2023-01-27 Thread Jan via gnucash-user
Hi John:

Thanks for the quick response!

I don't need a future exchange rate for my scheduled posting, any exchange
rate will do. So I experimented a little more and it turns out that I CAN
schedule a payment from a non-USD (the primary currency) account after all.
Only when I use the checkbox "create automatically", I always get an error
message: "Scheduled transactions with variables or involving more than one
commodity cannot automatically be created." That now makes sense to me as
GnuCash probably expects me to specify a current exchange rate at the time
of posting. As long as I get a reminder, that's fine.

Pity that there is no summary report of scheduled transactions. There'd be
plenty of room to add a few more columns (like value, and possibly even the
involved accounts) in the Scheduled Transactions Overview screen. I don't
know how difficult that is, of course, and how many other users would be
interested in that.

Thanks again, Jan

If you mean in number 1 that there's no way to specify a future exchange
rate, that's correct. A multi-commodity scheduled transaction will require
you to enter the exchange rate in the Since Last Run dialog.

There is indeed no summary report of scheduled transactions.

Re: [GNC] Entering Share Purchase/Sale

2023-01-27 Thread john
Installing Finance::Quote isn't a prerequisite for anything except retrieving
quotes from some online services.

"Share" seems like an unlikely name for a security, but whatever. What problem
did you have creating the security?

BTW, xboxboy misled you a bit: Your share account must have a parent account of
type Asset and must itself be of type Stock or Mutual Fund.

Make sure that the currency of the parent account is the one that the shares
trade in. For example if your home currency is AUD but the shares trade on the
London stock exchange then you should create an Asset account in GBP to be the
parent for the share account. If you do trade in securities priced in
currencies other than your home one you should turn on Trading Accounts in
File>Properties and always do a two-step transfer from your home currency to
the stock's currency then buy the stock in that currency; for a sale you'd do
the reverse, selling the stock in its currency then transferring the proceeds
to the home currency. Do that even if your broker does it all in one step so
that you can capture the separate gains and losses from the stock's price
change and the exchange rate differences between the two currencies. This is
especially important if you want to use online price retrieval because GnuCash
will ignore indirect prices (in the example, Stock->GBP->AUD) if there are any
direct prices (Stock->AUD) available and online price retrieval will retrieve
prices only in the stock's trading currency.

John Ralls

For some things I can't get Gnucash to do I just export transactions to
CSV and then use Excel (and Power Query if needed) to get info in form I
want it to be. I don't know whether scheduled items can be exported or
not because I haven't set up any (I know what it is about, I just don't
need to do it since payments usually are variable in amounts and/or are
part of an import to checking or savings).

For the record, GnuCash was around 20 years ago... :)
Indeed, GnuCash was even around last century!

Re: [GNC] Entering Dividend Confusion

2023-01-27 Thread xboxboy.mageia+GnuCash

I just wish to thank everyone for their help again.

I've successfully entered 35+ years!! of dividends, franking credits,
left over credits, and dividend re-investments, name changes, and
takeovers for one of my long term stocks.

It all balances perfectly (couple hiccups along the way, but I got them
sorted)

Thank you all! This has been a multi year project (life gets in the way
at times), but I honestly see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I really wish I had access to a FREE, OPEN SOURCE accounting package
like this 20 years ago!

Thank you all. I really, really, honestly appreciate it.

No you don't, dividends can be entered into a dividend account like any
other transaction. The main feature of a "Stock" account type is easier
revaluation of a portfolio, ie what is my portfolio worth on the day prices
were updated. It is also a stock classification feature on the payment.

As I recall, the original question was why the account was missing the
stock and price options.

Re: [GNC] Entering Share Purchase/Sale

2023-01-27 Thread xboxboy.mageia+GnuCash

I went through something similar only a while back:

There are way smarter, and experienced people than me here, so wait for
them, but in the mean time I would:

Make sure the account for the shares, in under equity, and classified as
a stock account, not a currency.

Open that account: Just start entering the transaction ie date, memo etc.

And as you do this (it did for me anyway) gnucash picks up you're doing
a stock allocation, not currency, and the columns change, to what's
necessary: You may have to click the split button to get this to occur.

HTH, but I've probably explained terribly.

Good luck.

[GNC] GnuCash: What scheduled transactions can't do

2023-01-27 Thread Jan via gnucash-user
Hi guys:

I'm still relatively new to GnuCash (after decades of extensive Quicken
usage) and want to make sure that what two things I couldn't do with GnuCash
really can't be done:

1. No option to schedule future transaction if an exchange rate is
involved - workaround manual transaction (detriment: effort and chance to
forget)
2. No option to see the value of scheduled transactions in one list or
report - workaround is clicking into every transaction and then the template
tab (detriment: effort and less overview)

Thanks for any suggestions, Jan

I like to name things occasionally with names that indicate what I'm going
to do, or what I have just done. If I notice a problem, I can look back and
find where the problem first occurred. It seems to work for me.

It would have been intentional, if I noticed a problem, I would have looked
for an earlier backup.

now, on to the show...

Thank you for your efforts. I see you put a lot of effort into this. To
describe the HKD problem would be quite complicated, as it is made up from
two transactions to the same vendor.

I did update the bug you reported

https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=798734

with a slightly more complicated case, but this time on Receivable Ageing.
It's more complicated, because unlike the very low value Porkbun case for
USD, which was paid on a debit card, this transaction was a bank transfer,
and attracted a bank fee, which I recorded separately.

I did not bother to obfuscate Porkbun, since who I buy a domain from is
hardly confidential - I used them after GoDaddy wanted about 5x as much, so
I decided to shop around. I did however obfuscate my customer, so little is
shown of their name.
