Are you on Windows, Mac or linux? How do you invoke GnuCash? There will be some
sort of environment in which the invocation occurs from your end.

Neither. See

Re: [GNC] Cash on Hand [was: Interest Income]

2023-02-22 Thread Gyle McCollam
I track all the money I spend, but my wife doesn't want to be bothered. So,
when she takes money from the bank or other sources, I just credit that source
and expense the money to an account named for her. you could do the same for
each person's "mad" money.

It's a good idea, but I apparently wasn't clear... we have set up a scheme
where each of us gets a certain amount of private money ("pin money" is an
old term for this; some call it "mad money" or "fun money") - it can be
spent however the person chooses with no questions asked. We have
sub-accounts to track our private money, and when we take cash out, it is
taken away from the subaccount balance. But when we spend cash from our
private fund, we don't track them (by choice).

Cash money spent that is NOT from our private account is tracked... and we
do have "Gifts" and "Gifts:Birthday" , and "Dining", etc. We try to ensure
that we get receipts and record all of these. Sometimes, we run to the
store for something small and pay cash - that, too is tracked.

Because of that, I just have to adjust the cash balance every now and then,
and "Adjustment" works well for our situation.

But thank you for the suggestions.

[GNC] Using Plaid

2023-02-22 Thread Ben Pracht
I'd like to use Plaid with GnuCash. There is a plaid2qif project that
claims to have been extensively tested with GnuCash and Plaid. However,
when I created the Plaid account, it asks for either a limited developer
account or a production account with a compliance audit. What account type
should I use? Anything else helpful to know?

Thanks,

I could set it since I control the server, but I don't know where I would
set it so that it would take effect before the connection attempt is made.

Re: [GNC] Not-for-profit report configurations sought

I can help with this BUT ..

a) The how to set up the CoA and what is normal for reports isn't REALLY
a gnucash question. In other words, were you still keeping your books
the old fashioned way pen and ink on paper, what would your CoA look
like and what would your reports look like.

b) Because the Board of Directors probably want a different level of
detail than you might need to fill out reports you must file with
authorities, perhaps the easiest approach is to create the reports with
the highest detail required, export from gnucash, and then edit the
reports to simplify detail as desired. For example, if doing a
990/990-EZ "printing and postage" is a line item but the BoD probably
wants to see total event cost, not how much was printing and postage. Or
with interns, etc. you need to know how much each paid (need to fill out
a 1099-MISC) but the BoD probably wants to see just the total for all
interns.

c) The titles of some reports are different. For example, not "Profit
and Loss" but "Revenues and Expenses" (but it i the same report). It is
customary for the annual report to do current year and previous side by
side, but again, this is easiest done outside of gnucash using your
favorite editor. Normally you want the ability to add
annotation/footnotes for anything unusual and a full power editor makes
that easier.

d) A minor annoyance but gnucash does not allow using business features
like invoicing without being on the accrual basis but the membership
often wants membership statements. There are work-arounds. The point
here is that membership dues in a voluntary organization are not a
receivable (there is no obligation to renew membership)

e) I can only help with state filing requirements for Massachusetts
(don't know what those might be for any other jurisdictions)

f) You did NOT say what sort of non-profit (under what designation)
