I'm not sure I'm using the GNU-Cash subscriber message system correctly to get
feedback & help.
But no doubt someone will advise me if the message is received at Help Line.

Subject: [GNC] How to run Year End Procedures for the Tax Year (UK end 5 April
2023), and start new Data set for the New Tax Year starting 6 April 2023

6 April 2023

I have just completed using GNUCash for my first full year of data.
As I'm UK based the tax reporting year ends 5 April.
I've printed out all the data that I need for a hard copy record.

But in the HELP Manual I cannot seem to find instructions on how I would run
any Year End Procedure, possibly clear out data files for the year just ended.
(Or save/store the previous year data files) Or how to set up the GNUCash
programme to start the New Year 6 April 2023 to 5 April 2024.

Can you help with advice?

Thanks

David,

Are you absolutely sure you used gnucash-5.0.tar.bz2 or gnucash-5.0.tar.gz and
not 5.0.zip or 5.0.tar.gz from one of the Source Code links on GitHub?

Regards,
John Ralls

Re: [GNC] Report Style Sheets with un-decorated links?

2023-04-06 Thread Vincent Dawans
Tommy:

I only know how to do it with the CSS style-sheet, so you have to pick that
one in your report option.

But first to edit the stylesheet, go to Edit - Stylesheets, then select
CSS-based stylesheet and click on Edit.
Then add the following to the very bottom. The first part removed the
underline, the second the italic and color.

a:link {
text-decoration: none; /* removes the underline from links */
}

a {
font-style: normal; /* removes the italics from links */
color: black; /* removes the blue color from links*/
}

Sincerely,

Vincent Dawans

Re: [GNC] Find not working in Gnucash for Windows 5.0

2023-04-06 Thread R Losey
Both of your insights are great, but if you'll pardon my jumping in, I
would point out that (in some earlier versions; not sure about the current
version), selecting Find would contain an option that was set (by default,
I think) to "Find within results" instead of "new search"... this caught me
several times.

Re: [GNC] Fwd: Update Available: GnuCash

2023-04-06 Thread David Cousens
Rhonda,

Just an additional note to David H's comment. I have had trouble building
GnuCash 5.0 on Linux Mint/Ubuntu as there is a file not included in the bzip
version although I can build from a clone of the Github repository as it
generates the file as was reported in earlier posts.

Compiled versions of GnuCash are available for Windows, MacOSX. Most Linux
distributions will have a version in their software repositories but it may not
be the latest version. There are instructions on the Wiki to build GnuCash from
the source files on Linux distributions
(https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Building_On_Linux,
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Building_On_Ubuntu
) if this is really what you want to do. You can also find scripts in past
posts for installing dependencies.

Re: [GNC] Fwd: Update Available: GnuCash

2023-04-06 Thread David H
Rhonda,

The .bz2 file is the compressed source code file for those intending to
compile Gnucash locally. What OS are you using? If macOS you need the .dmg
file and for Windows the .exe file

You can either go to the Gnucash web site at
https://gnucash.org/download.phtml and download the correct file or
download using the following links from John Ralls original release email :

Microsoft Windows:
https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash/releases/download/5.0/gnucash-5.0.setup.exe
https://downloads.sourceforge.net/gnucash/gnucash%20%28unstable%29/5.0/gnucash-5.0.setup.exe

Apple macOS:
https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash/releases/download/5.0/Gnucash-Intel-5.0-1.dmg
https://downloads.sourceforge.net/gnucash/gnucash%20%28unstable%29/5.0/Gnucash-Intel-5.0-1.dmg

Cheers David H.

[GNC] Fwd: Update Available: GnuCash

2023-04-06 Thread Rhonda Anderson
Hello,

I am unable to update to this version. I can download it, but when I click
on it, the error message says I don't have the correct app. I did notice
that this is a bz2 file, while previous upgrades have been application
files. Is there something I need to be doing differently to get this
upgrade to install?

Thank you,
Rhonda Anderson

[GNC] Printing bug in GnuCash 5

2023-04-06 Thread Tommy Trussell
I'm running the Flathub 5.0-1 build on Ubuntu 22.04 and 22.10 (different
machines). I'm finding that on the SECOND page of Transaction reports,
there's often a line at the top that overprints the second line at the top
of the report. I don't see a problem on page 4, 5, etc., just page 2.

So far I've been able to work around it, but I'm mentioning it here, and I
filed bug # 798833

P.S.:
Overall I have been very happy with GnuCash 5. I find that it loads the
data file noticeably faster.

I do find that the autocomplete has changed since 4.13 and I find that if I
click out of the field too soon the application is not so "aggressive"
about autocompleting as it used to be. I actually think this is a good
thing because previously it was very hard to override autocompletions that
start similarly, but I have to get used to it, and if I move too fast I
find I've entered strange partial strings in the Description fields.

Re: [GNC] Command line quotes still not fixed

2023-04-06 Thread David H
I don't know, perhaps for the 80% of us that do use alphavantage and may
not have set it up, especially a new user setting up gnucash for the first
time that may not realise the relationship :-) You can safely ignore it
then after all it is only a warning message.

Cheers David H.

As I do not use Alphavantage, just 'Yahoo as json', why is it looking for an

I don't think the version difference is a mystery - remember that Flatpak is a
sandbox so presumably brings along whatever perl version it was built/packaged
with.  If you set your Alphavantage api key in the Gnucash application itself
you'll probably also also get rid of the other error message. The following is
all I get displayed using Geert's command format:
flatpak run --command=gnucash-cli org.gnucash.GnuCash --quotes get --
'/home/h/Documents/GnuCash/Data Files/h.gnucash'
Found Finance::Quote version 1.5301.

I still get a lot of errors that do not affect my quote fetch.
It finds 1.5301 even though I installed 1.5401, a different mystery!

Actually instead of adding a --namespace parameter, you can just use '--' to
separate the named parameters from the positional parameters like so:flatpak
run --command=gnucash-cli org.gnucash.GnuCash --quotes get --
/home/dgp/GnuCash/ubuntu-DGPickett.gnucash
That's a common unix way to solve such ambiquities.

Re: [GNC] Command line quotes still not fixed

2023-04-06 Thread David H
I don't think the version difference is a mystery - remember that Flatpak
is a sandbox so presumably brings along whatever perl version it was
built/packaged with. If you set your Alphavantage api key in the Gnucash
application itself you'll probably also also get rid of the other error
message. The following is all I get displayed using Geert's command format:

flatpak run --command=gnucash-cli org.gnucash.GnuCash --quotes get --
'/home/h/Documents/GnuCash/Data Files/h.gnucash'
Found Finance::Quote version 1.5301.

I don't understand why, but "--" does also work, like "--namespace='.*'".

2023-04-06 Thread David G. Pickett via gnucash-user
Thanks!

So someone erased a ' = ".*" ' from a char * / std::string variable definition,
so sad!  I am sure the bug fix will be out soon if not already.

Does GnuCash have a test suite to verify it still works in prior behaviors?  Do
bug repairs update the test suite to detect the bug before they fix it?
There's a term for that, code to test or something such!  Another email chain
on grep is full of bugs introduced into various implementations of regex and
grep, so they might not have learned/adopted that paradigm.  I supposed it was
invented by Hippocrates: "First, do no harm!"?  :D

The namespace parameter is a regular expression, so .* will get the quotes from
all of your namespaces.

Yes, I've always had the UK date format selected, i.e. dd/mm/.

I'm using GnuCash Version 4.12 on Windows 10, and today, 6 April, is the

As I have the "Total (Period)" column showing in the COE, I was expecting to
see mostly zeros in that column today, but was surprised to see many totals
much higher than that, and in the region of what I might have expected if it
had not been a new fiscal year.
Under Preferences/Accounting Period/Start Date, the selection is
Absolute:6/4/23, and under End Date, the selection is Relative:Today.
In previous years, this arrangement has appeared to work as expected, and the
only other change I've made since last year is an upgrade from GC 3.5 to GC
4.12.
Today, after a series of trial-and-error changes to the Preferences setup, each
followed by a restart of the program, I've managed to get it working as
expected, with the final setting the same was at the start. Although it now
seems that all is well, I'd be interested to know how this problem might have
occurred, and whether there is anything I should have done to prevent it, or
whether there might be a bug in the program that others may be able to
identify. Also, is there any possibility that other totals in that column may
have been inaccurate during the last 12 months but were less easy to spot than
they were today?

Re: [GNC] Command line quotes still not fixed

2023-04-06 Thread David G. Pickett via gnucash-user
So no idea what is default if I never set/changed it?

I pasted in the actual plain text output of the command but the smart kids
reformatted it!  Should I need training to send plain text? If this was a web
app, they might have buttons for plain text block inclusion, but it is simple
email, maybe html but more probably barefoot ESMTP.

What default namespace, look in YOUR security editor - as far as I know it's
whatever you set up.  I have a vague recollection that it doesn't really care
and will be happy with just a single character i.e. --namespace=x but don't
quote me on that.
By the way your original email could do with some halfway decent formatting -
see what the mailing list received at
https://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-user/2023-April/106230.html you
might like to tweak that to make it readable in future.

Fair enough. My experience with the "Find..." is that it's buggy, and so you're
right, I didn't spend a tremendous amount of effort sorting out the differences.

[GNC] New tax year - unexpected GnuCash display

2023-04-06 Thread aeg via gnucash-user
I'm using GnuCash Version 4.12 on Windows 10, and today, 6 April, is the
beginning of the new UK tax year.

To expand on this: the description is a transaction property, while action and
memo are split
properties.

If you initiate a search from an account register on any split property, it
will only search the
splits that belong to that account and not the other splits for all
transactions shown.
Searching for transaction properties will always work as they are shared by all
splits in the
split register.

Re: [GNC] Command line quotes still not fixed

2023-04-06 Thread Geert Janssens
Actually instead of adding a --namespace parameter, you can just use '--' to
separate the
named parameters from the positional parameters like so:
flatpak run --command=gnucash-cli org.gnucash.GnuCash --quotes get -- /home/dgp/
GnuCash/ubuntu-DGPickett.gnucash

That's a common unix way to solve such ambiquities.

Probably you already know this, but ...

Gnucash will only find transactions that are in the window that is on
top when you initiate the Find.

Therefore, if you want to make sure of getting all matching transactions
in all accounts rather than just one, you need to start your Find while
the Accounts window (lost of accounts) is on top.
