both the sources were working fine, prices were updating successfully

Excellent. That is helpful information. Next, try testing quote
retrieval from the command line. If this succeeds, then your problem is
probably inside GnuCash. If this fails, then the problem is probably
with the Finance::Quote software bundled with GnuCash, or with the data
source, or with the configuration.

Instructions for testing quote retrieval from the command line are at:

The command looks something like:

gnucash-cli -V --quotes dump nseindia RELIANCE

On my older version (4.14) of GnuCash, with an older version of the
command, I get:

% /Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources/bin/gnc-fq-dump nseindia RELIANCE

Finance::Quote fields Gnucash uses:

    symbol: RELIANCE <=== required

  date: 08/04/2023   <=== recommended

  currency: INR  <=== required

  last: 2508 <=\

   nav:  <=== one of these

 price:  <=/

  timezone:  <=== optional

I hope this helps you get another step further forward.

3. I am using following version ( as it appears in help--> about menu

[GNC] Upgrade to 4.14 (was: Upgrade to 3.11: question)

2023-08-04 Thread Stan Brown (using GC 2.6.21/3.11/4.14)
The main point of this is a possible solution to a problem someone else
reported a few days ago. You may want to skip the next two paragraphs,
which are about my own journey of updating GC, if you want to get right
to the meat.

I'm on Windows 10, upgrading from 2.6.19 to 5.x, one major version at a
time. The upgrade to 2.6.21 went fine, including test reports and Check
& Repair All. The upgrade to 3.11 didn't import the settings, saved
report configurations, and preferences; however, with some help from
Adrien I was able to move the things that 3.11 didn't, and all those
issues are solved.

I then ran 3.11's Check & Repair All on my two data files, which cover
2011-2017 and 2018 to present. That took a quite surprising
_six_and_a_half_hours_ for two files that were just 870 and 880 KB
(compressed).

But 3.11's Check & Repair All did finish, though the Save button
remained grayed out so apparently it found nothing to repair. Next I
cloned my 3.11 machine and installed 4.14 on the clone.

To my surprise, I got the dialog about some users wanting to create
accounts -- the dialog you get when you open GC and have no books in
your list. Also, my preferences had been changed to defaults. I wasn't
expecting that. But I remember someone else posted about a similar
experience, though I don't remember the resolution, if there is one.

So I exported the HKCU\GSettings key from the System Registry in the
3.11 and 4.13 machines, and compared the exported files. Ditto with the
%APPDATA%\GnuCash\books\*.gcm files that record the Accounts tab's
columns and sort order as well as info about other open tabs. There
didn't seem to be as many differences as I expected.

Scratching my head, I reopened GC 4.14, closed the Tip of the Day, and
then to my astonishment saw GC's window populate with all the previously
open tabs, and the Accounts tab was all set up as I had done it.
Settings like "Reverse Balanced Accounts", which had been the defaults
instead of what I picked, were now right.

In the very funny British TV show /The IT Crowd/, it's standard to
answer the phone "IT, have you tried turning it off and on again?" Based
on my experience, the other person who found GC 4.14 wasn't reopening
saved books and preferences weren't migrated might be able to fix
everything by just closing GC and then reopening it. That is, of course,
if it hasn't already been fixed in some other way.

Re: [GNC] Upgrade to 3.11: question

2023-08-04 Thread Stan Brown (using GC 2.6.21)
TL;DR version:

Thanks, Adrien, for your detailed response. With your help all of the
problems that I mentioned are now resolved. Of my two data files, one
has been through 3.11 Check and Repair and the other is going through it
now.

Your hint (below) about saved reports motivated me to try copying my
.gcm files from the old 2.x %USERPROFILE%\.gnucash\books folder to the
new 3.x %APPDATA%\GnuCash\books folder. Those files contain
customizations of the Accounts tab and various account registers. Sure
enough, when I closed GC 3.11, copied the .gcm folders for my two files,
and reopened 3.1, all three of the above troubles were fixed.

So it looks like the 3.11 bug in migrating settings extends beyond
reports to the above customizations. I'll try to remember that for when
someone eve slower than I at upgrading posts that they're experiencing
this problem.

The old ones were saved-reports-2.4 and saved-reports-2.4.backup. I
copied both and renamed them from 2.4 to 2.8; that brought back my saved
reports.

I was aware of the first of those two, and wrote a batch file that uses
it to synch settings and reports between my desktop and laptop. But I
was unaware of the second one. It's certainly easier to read!

But it omits HKCU\Software\Gsettings in the System Registry, where GC
stores user preferences and positions of GC's many popup windows. I got
this from a posting by Geert from 2021-04-07 called "Re: [GNC] Migrating
and updating version 2 to 4". But it's also in the first of your two
wiki links above, and it's part of my synch batch file.

The 2.6.21 VM didn't have %APPDATA%\GnuCash, because that's a
3.x-and-above folder. In 2.6 the folder is %USERPROFILE%\.GnuCash (note
the period) according to the Diagrams wiki page you cited.. I checked on
my real machine, still running 2.6.19, and there was no
%APPDATA%\GnuCash. So I think this too was part of 3.11's problem in
migrating.

The 2.6.21 Check & Repair All was pretty fast, and displayed helpful
status messages at the lower right corner of the GC window. The 3.11
Check & Repair All is sllowww -- 2 hours for each of my
two data files, which are each about 860 KB (compressed) -- and it
displays _nothing_, not even a success message when it finishes. I have
to run Task Manager to see that GC is doing anything. It was especially
painful because I discovered I had hidden some accounts that I shouldn't
have, and rather than make the changes separately in my production files
plus two VMs I elected to start over. But I shouldn't ever need to use
3.11 again

[GNC] MySQL backend

2023-08-04 Thread John Ralls
https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=798992 Reports that after upgrading to
MariaDB 11 on their servers, two Windows users are unable to work with their
GnuCash databases. GnuCash appears to connect but DBI thinks that numeric
variables are strings and, since it's expecting numbers, declines to read them.

Has anyone using GnuCash on macOS or Linux experienced this problem?

Re: [GNC] How do I search foi empty description, notes or memo fields

2023-08-04 Thread Kalpesh Patel
If you need to include white space such as a space, a tab, a carriage
return, a line feed, or a form feed as construing null, it would be:

^\s*$

This is thinking from perspective that you are looking at the description
which shows no visible characters thinking that it is blank else John's
suggestion is gold.

You can use matches regex and ^$ or doesn't match regex and .+ . In regular
expressions ^ means the beginning of the string and $ means the end, so ^$
is an empty string. Conversely . means any character and + means
one-or-more, so .+ matches anything. Note that * in place of + means
zero-or-more so .* will match any contents or none at all. It has its uses
but this wouldn't be one of them.

I vaguely recall seeing a thread or two on -user about this. I don't
think anything is wrong, you just have to reset your columns and reset
your expanded accounts. See below about file migrations.

* All of my saved report configurations are gone.
3.x changed the file name of the saved reports. I thought the migration
had been fixed as of 3.11, but some folks did have some issues.

If I recall correctly, find the file in your GNC_DATA_HOME directory
labeled saved-reports-2.6 and rename it to saved-reports-2.8 (this was
supposed to be the next major version after 2.6 before the version
scheme was changed, and the devs have left the 'saved-reports-x.y' file
at 2.8 ever since.)

Since you are embarking on a migration of several versions, it would be
a good idea to familiarize yourself with the following Wiki on file
locations:

https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Configuration_Locations

and this handy diagram:

https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Configuration_Diagrams_-_Windows

and note the differences between 2.6.x and 3.x+

After migrating the relevant files from the 2.6.x locations to the new
locations and names that didn't get migrated automatically, you may find
everything is as you expect.

I did check, and there was no %APPDATA%\GnuCash folder on the 2.6.21
machine before I cloned it. The 3.11 installer, or the application,
created %APPDATA%\GnuCash containing:
subfolder books (containing a 2 KB .gcm file)
subfolder checks (empty)
subfolder translog (empty)
accelerator-map, 20 KB
expressions-2.0, 0 bytes
stylesheets-2.0, 2 KB

There *should* have been an %APPDATA%/GnuCash folder.

From your list, it is not surprising that saved reports are missing, as
the file is as well, even with the old name.

If that 2.6.21 VM never had it, you should be able to copy it from
whatever other working 2.6.x version you have.

[GNC] Upgrade to 3.11: question

I'm on Windows 10, upgrading from 2.6.19 to 5.x, one major version at a
time. The upgrade to 2.6.21 went fine, including test reports and Check
& Repair All.

I then cloned the virtual machine, opened the clone, and ran the 3.11

were no error messages during install.

When I ran GC 3.11 it opened the last-used file, but:
* There's only an Accounts tab, not any of the other tabs I previously
had open.
* The Accounts tab has forgotten my chosen columns.
* The accounts tree is collapsed to Assets, Expenses, Income,
Liabilities, Net Worth, though the accounts are there if I click the
triangles.
* All of my saved report configurations are gone.
On the other hand, my preferences, such as Register Defaults: Only
display leaf account names, did get imported.

Is this normal, or have I screwed up somehow?

I did check, and there was no %APPDATA%\GnuCash folder on the 2.6.21
machine before I cloned it. The 3.11 installer, or the application,

3. I am using following version ( as it appears in help--> about menu of

Version : 5.3

Finance Quote : 1.57

I am using Window 10 home

I tried to install GNU cash on another laptop running on Windows 11
student, using the same account  file which I created on my computer (

still without success so far the finance quotes are concerned.

Before starting posting my regular accounts and suing the GNU cash at
production level for my accounts, I studied it detail, particularly the
finance quote and investment accounting, as one of the purpose of using
GNUcash over other software was to track my investment.

Hope above information is useful to you for anylsing the issue. Thanks
again a lot for your kind support and eagerness to hep me. Very much
appreciate,

With my best regards
