It is correct that the email sent from the list could contain advice on
the appropriate "reply to", but the long standing choice of the admins
is not to set a "reply to".

Here is Mailman's opinion
"reply_goes_to_list (general): Where are replies to list messages
directed? Poster is strongly recommended for most mailing lists.

This option controls what Mailman does to the Reply-To: header in
messages flowing through this mailing list. When set to Poster, no
Reply-To: header is added by Mailman, although if one is present in the
original message, it is not stripped. Setting this value to either This
list or Explicit address causes Mailman to insert a specific Reply-To:
header in all messages, overriding the header in the original message
if necessary (Explicit address inserts the value of reply_to_address).

There are many reasons not to introduce or override the Reply-To:
header. One is that some posters depend on their own Reply-To: settings
to convey their valid return address. Another is that modifying
Reply-To: makes it much more difficult to send private replies. See
`Reply-To' Munging Considered Harmful for a general discussion of this
issue. See Reply-To Munging Considered Useful for a dissenting opinion.

Some mailing lists have restricted posting privileges, with a parallel
list devoted to discussions. Examples are `patches' or `checkin' lists,
where software changes are posted by a revision control system, but
discussion about the changes occurs on a developers mailing list. To
support these types of mailing lists, select Explicit address and set
the Reply-To: address below to point to the parallel list.
"

The new subscriber welcome message says
"Note that this list is configured NOT to automatically send replies
back to the list (as per
 ).

My client provides a whole range of options:  Reply; Reply List; Reply
All.  No default.

It must be up to the email software the recipient is using.  If they
want a new default then they need to get a new client with the the
default they want.

Actually, it's both. Email clients may show options to reply to list, or
they may not. (My Thunderbird email client sometimes does and sometimes
doesn't.)

But there is a special header line, Reply-To, that is part of the
standard email protocol. If you simply select Reply, all email clients
are supposed to direct the reply email to the address on the Reply-To
line, and as far as I know all do.

The mailing list admins have chosen not to use that option, which would
solve the problem of people just hitting Reply and having their email
not go to the list. But I remember there was extensive discussion of
this, some months ago, and the consensus was that setting
Reply-To: gnucash-user@gnucash.org
while it would solve the
carelessly-sending-to-one-person-instead-of-the-list problem, would
cause some other problem. I can't remember what that problem was, but as
far as I can recall everyone accepted that it would be worse than people
having to learn to remember to send replies to the list.

I am on numerous mailing lists. This is the *only* one where simply hitting
reply does automatically go to the list.

Re: [GNC] Can I find transactions into an account that has only one split?

2023-11-24 Thread David Cousens
David,

That is a function of the email client program you are using not the mailing
list admins. Most clients will have a reply to list function as one of the
options. My client (Evolution on Linux) for example brings up a dialogue after
selection of Reply to Sender which offers the options of:

Reply Privately --- only to the sender
Reply to All --- reply to all addresses on the To and CC lists
Reply to List--- reply only to a mailing list address

Selecting either of the last two options will ensure that the reply goes to the
list in my case.
