Re: [GNC] GnuCash getting worse?

2024-07-19 Thread fromvendor
Hi, I did try to read the online doc (not the context) and one of the things
that would have helped was a notation on which fields were required. If that
info was there, I missed it. I knew I didn't have them all so I just stubbed
in something for everything and then removed them one by one until I found
which one caused the commodity message. After I got the file lined out, it
went very smooth.

I was taking QB data and importing it. On a different import (customer data),
I created some formulas which combined many QB fields into one so I wouldn't
lose any data. Made the description (I think) line very long but it took it
and I was pleased there was no length restriction. Looked odd however :)

Anyway, as I said earlier, thanks so much for all of your efforts- a great
product & a great community to go with it.

Cheers!

As I said, I see that as a documentation issue. The column labels have to be
terse and we can’t use per-item tooltips in the long run because the Gtk folks
have pulled them from Gtk4. It’s not great that Geert changed the headings for
the amount columns from Deposit and Withdrawal to Amount and Amount(negated)
but forgot to change the intro screen to reflect it.

The import dialog also lacks a help button. OTOH the context help is so clunky
I wonder if anyone would use it. Would you?
Even if you would the actual documentation for importing CSV doesn’t explain
all of the column headers and still says Deposit and Withdrawal.

FWIW, I really struggled with this to figure out what was wrong with my
imports. There is a Commodity field and there is a Currency field. I had to
repeatedly fill in fields until I found the issue was Currency.

I also think all of you that help/develop this product do a great job.

That’s too narrow an interpretation of “commodity”. Both securities and
currencies are commodities, but for example widgets are commodities but are
neither securities nor currencies. The error message is correct, what’s
apparently lacking is communicating to users the meaning of “commodity”. We’re
also guilty of mixed messaging because we call the tool that manages
commodities the Security Editor. Both are a larger problem than an error dialog
in the CSV importer.

Is there a way to edit the Quicken/Quickbooks 3-part check layout? My
checks mostly align but the written check amount and the items below
that are off by about 1/2 a line.

I haven't been able to locate the file that has that layout.

Re: [GNC] Imbalance Records with zero amounts

2024-06-26 Thread fromvendor
Howdy Joe, I'll take a stab at this one

I have noted when I create a transaction that has splits that if I end up with
an zero amount Imbalance entry in the middle of the splits (not at the end)
then saving the transaction will save it with the zero imbalance split and it
will then appear in the imbalance register as you described.

My solution is to right-click the zero imbalance entry and select delete-split
(just the row, not the entire set of splits) and then save the transaction.

I think the zero imbalance entry when on the bottom of the splits gets removed
but not if it's in the middle of the split entries.

Anyway, my 2 cents worth & hope it helps.

Hello,

I have several consecutive records in my imbalance account where the
amounts in the deposit and withdrawal columns are both zero (blank).

These records are  split transaction records.  When I examine the items
in the split the imbalance shows zero.  I don't see any error when I
jump to the items in the split.

This seems like a bug or an error in my bookkeeping.  I am using the
latest version of gnucash.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I suppose there is a command to gracefully kill any running gnucash instance so
it does not hit a lock file?  Of course, even with auto save, with a kill, you
have to clean up the lock file, and the file may lose uncommitted transactions!
It'd be nicer for the running instance to run it at an appropriate time.
I shut down my instance and gave it a try from a WinDOS command line, but

[GNC] Can I set an option to stop auto-fill ?

2024-06-03 Thread fromvendor
Hi y'all!

I get so many things from online vendors (Amazon, Microsoft, etc, etc) and they
are generally different and going to various different accounts and sometimes
they have splits.

I am finding the auto-complete function to be more troublesome than not and I'd
like a way to turn it off. I don't mind it overmuch filling in the account so
much as the amount and the splits. I'd rather have none of it that have the
confustion (that's confusion and frustration in a word) caused by the auto-fill.

I, BTW, am loving the software. I'm sure the setting is in there somewhere,
I'm just not finding it.

I'm certainly open to what I'd like the software to do. I realize this is an
open source project and I'm no-longer (as in ancient) in the coding world or I
would attempt something myself (I wouldn't mind being able to help out but I'm
a Windows and Mainframe assembly guy so no relevant skills I suspect).

Anyway, what I'd like is if the "prior" transaction has splits, then simply
leave the whole thing un-populated. If it doesn't have splits, go ahead and
put in the account. Leave the cursor in the account field and don't fill in
anything else (notes, amount, etc). That would be ideal for me. Simply
turning off the auto-complete is, I expect, a simpler option and probably
already there I just don't know where to turn it off.

Thanks all & Blessings!

Subject: [GNC] Finance::Quote Pre-Release 1.61_02 Uploaded to CPAN

Greetings,

Finance::Quote v1.61_02 has been uploaded to CPAN.

Changes since 1.61

* Modified yahooJSON.pm module in order handle EU consent redirects better.

* TwelveData.pm - Added "last" to data being returned. The method
"twelvedata" was returning a value for "close". GnuCash expects "last"
or "price" in order to utilize the quote data.

* BorsaItaliana.pm - New module for Borsa Italiana, Italian traded bonds
using ISIN

* YahooWeb.pm - Issue #377. Modified YahooWeb to account for changes
from Yahoo.

Using cpan or cpanm, install "BPSCHUCK/Finance-Quote-1.61_02.tar.gz".

TwelveData has data for US and foreign exchanges. It does require an API
key from https://twelvedata.com/.

Another option for retrieving US quotes is MarketWatch. No API key needed.

I'm still trying to resurrect the Fool module. But hit another wall when
getting "too many requests" after only a half dozen requests. Even when
spaced out at 20 seconds per request.

Thank you.

Just a quick status.

Just an FYI, I have worked on getting a PR ready using kalpesh Patel's
changes. I tried applying the same logic to the
CurrencyRates/YahooJSON.pm currency module with no luck. In that case I
quickly modified the currency module to utilize the "v8" API. I admit, I
suck at using the developer tool/console in Chrome and Firefox to figure
out the magic sauce needed. Big thanks to Mr. Patel on this one.

There is some miscellaneous housekeeping and cleanup that needs to be
done before pushing a final release to CPAN. Plus I had some other
changes that I was planning for v1.60 but haven't done yet. Instead of
v1.60, I may upload v1.59_01 tomorrow so people can at least fetch the
fix for YahooJSON before v1.60 is uploaded and indexed by CPAN.

Re: [GNC] FYI Web tables, CSV, prices info and inquiry

I've just done something like that and the only trouble I had was getting the

I ended up having to use the ISO format, but I'm going to try again after 4
central and see if I can't get it to work.

One of my lines in the spreadsheet looks like this (details munged to protect

Hope that helps.

Not all users know that the nice table of your stocks and prices that you see
on so many web sites like my morningstar portfolio can be selected and pasted
into a spreadsheet like Excel, Google Sheets, or LibreOffice Calc, maybe not
perfectly, but so it is easy to turn them into a clean spreadsheet table.  My
Morningstar did something weird with the first column but it was all there and
not too hard to cut and paste or paste-special it into a nice table.  Then you
have the option of saving it as a CSV file (Comma Separated Value), which loses
any funny formatting and hypertext links and is maybe gnucash friendly.

It would be a bit of an emergency, and I could do this one stock at a time, but
importing this CSV to gnucash prices would be a nice backup.  I have not done
the research or reading above to know how to import such a table into gnucash
prices.  Can someone give a simple how-to?  Do I need a date column?  A column
to say it is nav or close?  Is there a web page help on this?

It's important to note that these APIs are likely not meant for direct
access. Which is why the previous APIs that the YahooJSON.pm all became
unusable at some point. This would be why you cannot find official
documentation for the APIs online like you can for APIs like the
AlphaVantage which limits what you can retrieve for free.

I've had less time to work on F::Q the last few months, so I'm not sure
when I'll be able to either rework the module to use the v8 API or test
and implement Kalpesh Patel's changes. Hopefully in the next week or so,
but if someone else wants to step up and create a pull request at
https://github.com/finance-quote/finance-quote that would be a great help.

It appears the format of page Cdnfundlibrary.pm uses to scrape the data
from fundlibrary.com has had major changes. The Fundata.pm module
(idata.fundata.com) has also stopped working for the same reason. See
Issue https://github.com/finance-quote/finance-quote/issues/366 and
discussion https://github.com/finance-quote/finance-quote/discussions/364.

Unfortunately both modules are likely going to be disabled and then
removed from Finance::Quote. The Fool.pm module has also recently
stopped working and it will also be disabled in the next release of F::Q.

Re: [GNC] Finance::quote YahooJSON

2024-04-11 Thread fromvendor
Kalpesh - Thank you for the link. I took a quick gander and it seems pretty
nice. Have you used it since the Yahoo thing went south and did it work? Are
you using the query api or scraping the window?

All,
I'm sure the Dev's are working on it, but do we have any idea what happened?
My log shows 401 type errors (Unauthorized) so I thought I'd add some
diagnostics in case it helps anyone.

Here is a set of lines from the log I keep (security redacted):
Found Finance::Quote version 1.59.
* 15:30:02  WARN  [GncQuotesImpl::parse_one_quote()]
Skipped NASDAQ:X - Finance::Quote returned fetch failure.
Reason Error retrieving quote for X. Attempt to fetch the URL
https://query2.finance.yahoo.com/v11/finance/quoteSummary/?symbol=X=price,summaryDetail,defaultKeyStatistics
resulted in HTTP response 401 (Unauthorized)

If I try the above URL, I get what appears to be a JSON reply:

{"finance":{"result":null,"error":{"code":"Unauthorized","description":"Invalid
Crumb"}}}

Dooing a bit of Google-fu, I find a 1 day old comment on reddit r/GnuCash
saying it's broke and a reply saying it's been turned off (no longer free) but
I have not found any comment from yahoo on the subject.

Hoping for some good news (and I'm sure I'm not alone on that).

I really appreciate this great working mail list and thanks for those who
devlop/fix/maintain the program.

-greg

Yes, you can:-

File / Import / Import Prices from a CSV file ...

You only need 5 columns:-
(1) Namespace
(2) Symbol
(3) Date
(4) Price
(5) Currency

See attached.

I've tried Advantech, Motley, and Rowe. All failed (different, but fails for
all of them).

I put in manual entries for now. Is there a way to import data to the price
database? I could create a CSV or the like and just update the numbers from
day to day until this gets resolved.

Re: [GNC] Import QIF files

Hi, I saw yesterday, I think, that there is an update to address this issue

installing the latest fix update if I understood what I read.

Beryl,
I can't help on the specifics as I only occasionally do imports. I will
give the request to supply your operating system and GnuCash version when
reporting a problem.

Also, and the main reason I replied, is to point out two emails in the same
day with that same error message while doing an import. The other user was
using the recently released version 5.6.

[GNC] Using gnucash-cli for updating quotes on Windows

2024-04-04 Thread fromvendor
I'm having trouble trying to tell gnucash-cli -Q get which provider to use. I
want it to use yahoo_json, which is what I have set up in the Security Editor
("Yahoo as JSON" for single quote source)

When I do get it to run, it looks like it's getting the data from AlphaVantage
as I get the following Warning message:
WARN  [GncFQQuoteSource::GncFQQuoteSource()] No Alpha Vantage
API key set, currency quotes and other AlphaVantage based quotes won't work.

It did work as I only have three securities at the moment. So, how do I
specify yahoo_json on the command line or is the warning spurious?

BTW, I really had a hard time getting the command to run properly on windows.
Perhaps I'm dumb, but the online places give no examples of what a properly
formatted command to look like. I did, however get the command to run and it
did update my file.

Here's what I discovered. Perhaps useful to someone in the future.

Apparently the datafile specification won't allow specifying the drive as I get
this error: failed to get_backend using access method "O"
I don't know if it would have handled a path specification, but since I had to
change to a different drive anyway, I changed my command window to the location
where the file resides.
Further, the datafile name wants the entire name with the suffix (so
.gnucash)
This resulted in a command line which looked like this: "C:\Program Files
(x86)\gnucash\bin\gnucash-cli.exe" -Q info <-- case matters for the -Q
This resulted in output so I did that right
Continued on to use the get and ended up with: "C:\Program Files
(x86)\gnucash\bin\gnucash-cli.exe" -Q get ".gnucash"
and that did update my datafile albeit with the warning above.

Thanks to all developers and the users of GNUcash

2024-04-02 Thread fromvendor
Geoff,
That's it! However I can't get it to produce right when I try it.

Can you send me relevant shots of your options for them? I have a couple of
months of data but I only get two columns of numbers 1/1/24 and 12/31/24.

I'm still using 5.5 and 5.6 is new enough that I'll stay away for a bit unless
I "HAVE TO" go forward. I've lived the bleeding edge for too many years, I
want to stay away from it if I can.

And thanks for the welcome!

[GNC] New user looking for some reporting help

2024-04-02 Thread fromvendor
Hi, I'm trying to figure out how to get some reports like I used to get out of
quickbooks. QB has made me so mad that I've abandoned them for this year and
I'm using GNUCash.

I'm using Version 5.5. (probably doesn't matter but I just today got the
Quotes thing working (three failures to install - each one got further until
3rd time charm). )

I'm having difficulty on a few things that I can't seem to figure out how to do
especially in regards to reporting.

One set of reports I'd like is Balance and P reports with Monthly columns.

So, I'd specify the overall date range (say 1 Jan to 31 March) and tell it I
want columns for each month and a column for the total for the selected date
range.

Is this something that already exists? Are there custom reports that can do
this? Are there "Add on" reports that I can get (and if so, where)?

This message also serves as my first message using a mail list in about 20
years so I'm hoping I've got it set up right.

Blessings,
