Hi, friends,
Sorry for going AWOL - I couldn't put any time into this issue until the
holidays.  I have figured it out!!  My anti-virus (a thing called
Bitprotector that is provided by Best Buy, where I got the laptop) blocked
guncash from doing something.  I discovered this completely by accident,
when I was downloading a movie from Cineplex and Bitprotector blocked it
and sent me to a window to tell it whether to unblock it ... and there was
gnucash also listed as blocked!!  Bitprotector had never told me about
that. So, I unblocked it and voila! Now gnucash works again.

Whew!

Well, it is brand new, and well-protected, so I think malware is a remote
possibility.
I will try the USB thing.

Yes, my user name is User. Should I change it (if I can figure out how)?

The folder is not read-only, but it does indicate that there are read-only
files in it that I can't find.

windows in your OP, it would certainly be possible on linux that the new
user ID would not have permissions to the files of an old ID...

I am the administrator for the machine.  I have Windows (10?)

I looked in the same folder as the data file, there is no .LCK file there.

Then that is not the problem; these files were created in another file
under a different user name; both machines were single user.

The actual error message I get when I click Save is "Could not make a

I then click "Close" (the only option in the error window), and it open

message "GnuCash could not write to C:\Users\User\Documents\Temporary
Gnucash\blahblahblah.gnucash. That database may be on a read-only file
system, or you may not have write permission for the directory." If I try
to overwrite the existing file, I get the warning message that it alredy
exists, and after that "Could not make a backup of the file
C:\Users\User\Documents\blahblahblah.gnucash" The changes don't save.

I exit by clicking on Save, and then when that is done, either clicking on
the X in the upper left corner or with File - Quit. Same results either
way.  I start the program from the descktop shortcut, but get the same
results when I open it from the Start menu.

No, the files are not "Read-Only".

My username for Windows??? Yes, it is different on the new computer. Does
that matter?
