Thanks for your advice I did manage to import a partial QIF file of my records. And so have now had a look at Gnucash. At the moment I don’t think it is worth me moving from my Quicken XG2004 as Gnucash is not quite as good yet (can’t see how to import share prices and overall not as easy to use) but may come back to it when Quicken stops working. When Gnucash crashes during an import the first thing to suspect is bad data in the import file. GnuCash is very picky about date format and will crash if the date format in the import file doesn't match.
