Re: [GNC] OneDrive and GnuCash

2022-01-19 Thread John Layman
In my experience, Dropbox and OneDrive differ considerably in performance.
I have used Dropbox for years as a way to synchronize a Linkman (bookmark)
database between several machines. It works quite well. Experiments using
OneDrive to do the same have been unsuccessful because it is much too slow.
I agree with the poster who advised against using a OneDrive folder for live
data. I've experimented with OneDrive enough to discover that it creates
hidden working copies of the file to be synced, broken into chunks. This
entails overhead in terms of time and local disk space, and it's not
difficult to see how this can create the kind of problem the OP can't
imagine is due to OneDrive.

can't see why OneDrive would be any different.

I simply use Syncthing to synchronise the GnuCash files between my
laptop and my desktop machines, it works perfectly. Obviously I need
to be sure I don't run GnuCash on both machines at the same time but
that's not difficult. Systems don't have to be on the same network
for Syncthing to work and it will re-synchronise after a total
disconnection.

It means I don't rely on 'the cloud' for any backups and everything is
kept on hardware that's mine. Syncthing is available for MS, Apple,
Linux and Android systems and can synchronise files across all of them
if you want.

I do keep (off site) incremental backups as well. You do need to be
able to go back in time to recover from your own errors which GnuCash
(or whatever) has faithfully saved for you! :-)

I have been using One Drive for over a year for a local community business

I also have another set of accounts for a charity that uses SharePoint to
save the files, again no problems.

Re: [GNC] OneDrive and GnuCash

2022-01-18 Thread Edward Doolittle
I tried OneDrive with gc for a while. It worked until it didn’t. I’m still not
sure what happened, but I think MS unilaterally decided to reorganize my
OneDrive setup. Gc just did not like what it did and starting one day gc would
not open the file. I’m not sure what was wrong, and I couldn’t find out,
because I don’t get the Windows file system at all (Unix guy here) and I just
could not figure it out even with Google’s help. My hypothesis was that
somewhere along the line something like a symlink was being used and gc didn’t
like it. But I still don’t have a clue, and I don’t need the aggravation, so I
just moved my gc files out of OneDrive.

I’ve not (yet) had any problems with Office apps and OneDrive which led me to
believe the problem is that gc accesses the Windows file system at too low a
level, but I’m sorry, I just don’t have time these days to help debug this
problem.

Aside from that, I was always sweating over race conditions. Once a long time
ago I lost some work because it wasn’t uploaded by OneDrive and then I force
opened the file on another computer overriding the lock (bad habit cuz I had to
do it fairly regularly). The work was in the cloud somewhere but it was less
trouble in that case for me to retype it. So my fault, really, but I really
really don’t need to expend a chunk of my brain mentally modelling the cloud
sync and lock behaviour every time I use gc.

Other cloud file services might provide better warnings, and might allow you to
wrap the call to gc in a test that will pop a warning until the file is
up-to-date in the cloud. Heck, OneDrive might provide such a wrapper too but I
don’t know the system well enough.

One piece of advice for everyone: when transferring data from paper to gc, keep
the paper with potentially unsynced data in a separate pile until you know it’s
ok (for whatever sense of ok is relevant to you … cloud synced or hard drive
synced or backed up to external hd, e.g.). When you know it is synced or
otherwise backed up, then file it. In addition to losing data to the cloud
issue described above, I’ve also lost data the old fashioned way (power failure
on a desktop without battery backup), and both times I had more trouble than
necessary re-running my transactions because I managed all those slips of paper
poorly.

There are two possibilities:

1) GnuCash does not have permission to view OneDrive, or

2) OneDrive is not being presented as a "Drive"

You can verify #2 by opening up a Terminal window and checking to see if you
can get to OneDrive from the Terminal. If you cannot, then the issue is that
it is not presenting as a drive. If you CAN, then it's more likely a
permission problem.

[GNC] OneDrive

2021-07-28 Thread Garry Eckermann

I'm running GnuCash Version: 4.6, Build ID: 4.6+(2021-06-26) on Windows 10

When importing QIF files I "browse" to find the OneDrive location, and
its not listed

Would appreciate some advice on getting access to OneDrive
as that is where I store my files

Cheers
Garry
