[GNC] Split Transaction now lists 2 items?

2018-10-18 Thread Jack Slater
I had been using the transaction split to account for varied spending from
a cash withdrawal.

It would be listed as 1 line item - ATM Draw - Cash - Split - $200
Opening the split I could define Expense: Dining - $110
Expense: Cleaning -
$90

But now, when I create that same transactions, it lists 2 items in the
ledger - 1 for $100 and the next entry for $90.

What am I doing wrong?

Two entries for a single transaction means that the transaction has two splits
in the account.

You might consider using the "Cash in Wallet" account as an intermediate, so an
ATM withdrawal is Bank Account -> Cash in Wallet and cash spending is Cash in
Wallet -> Expenses_Account, all simple (i.e. two-split) transactions.

...So if you want to see only one line in the register view for a
particular account, enter only the total in the split line for that
account. There can still be as many other split lines as you want.

Reading the original post suggests to me that is exactly what he has
done. Cash 200, Expense 110, Expense 90.

Re: [GNC] Split Transaction now lists 2 items?

2018-10-19 Thread Jack Slater
I’m not sure if it’s the same issue really. I’m entering the transaction the
same way I have been for several months yet recently it’s been problematic last
2 weeks.

I enter the total on 1 register line like this:
Cash - $200

Then I right click and select split and enter:
—-——-— Expense $110
— Cleaning $ 90
Assets Checking $200

Press Return (enter)

And I’d see 1 line in register reading:
Cash - Split - $200

Now I see 2 lines in register reading:
Cash - Split - $110
Cash - Split - $ 90

Are you entering the transaction in in your checking register view or in

Re: [GNC] Split Transaction now lists 2 items?

2018-10-19 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Personally, I got so tired of right-clicking to split and not being able to see
the detail of splits at a glance (nearly all of my transactions contain
multiple splits, I rarely have just a Dr/Cr basic transaction) that I just
switched to Transaction View and never looked back. (I also eventually turned
on Double Line mode when I figured out that gave me an overall transaction
note, instead of just memos for the splits)

That might be why I didn’t notice this change.

Also, I tried a test transaction as you’ve described and I can’t even duplicate
either result.

First, you enter Cash $200, but then you’ve entered three splits for Expense
($110), Cleaning ($90) and Checking ($200) - that doesn’t balance.

Are you spending money from the Cash account or the Checking account? You only
need one of those to balance the Expense and Cleaning debits. Are you also
withdrawing cash? Paying partially from both Cash & Checking?

I’m not sure where you’re entering this transaction, but I know some people
like using the Journal out of habit. However, I find a more reliable workflow
is to always enter transactions in the register money is coming *from* and I
never make a mess.

Regards,
Adrien
