I get thoroughly confused when I see all four words debit, credit, deposit and withdrawal in the same sentence. Are you really copying from and pasting to the same account? If so, why not just use the duplicate function. If not, is the target account the same type as the source? Oh, which version of GnuCash are you using and your OS? I'm sure - it's hard for me to keep track too! Using my terms credit and debit and then the column heading names from GC Yes, copy and paste in the same account. Never knew duplicate existed. Copy/Paste kind of a standard process for me for years in all sorts of applications. I'm certain I've done it many times before without this issue (but old man memory unreliable!) The accounts are all the same - its why I think Copy/Paste would perform exactly that. Windows 10 and GC version 4.11. Just a thought: You might have better luck right-clicking on the transaction and selecting Duplicate Transaction. That has always duplicated the entire transaction for me, and it might even require fewer mouse clicks than copy-paste. Stan, Jack's method should work too. It might give different results depending on whether the cursor is sitting in the new transaction line or on an existing transaction while pasting. I haven't personally tried it. When pasted into the card account, I would find a deposit instead of a withdrawal. I haven't ever taken the time to report and discuss the problem, but learned that jumping to the Expense account involved and moving the transaction from there was more reliable. I have vague memories that it wasn't always like this, but I've been on Gnucash since about V1.6 and I didn't pay attention to when this started. Liz, Just wanted to mention that if you post to cash ledger and meant to post to a card, instead of cutting and pasting, in the cash ledger, you could click on the transaction and then the split icon. Then click on the line for the cash ledger. You will then have the down arrow for the account selection. You can then select the appropriate card account and it will move the transaction and your debits and credits will be correct. This may sound more involved, but it is a lot easier than it sounds and you don't have to move between accounts when cutting and pasting. This is what I do too, whenever I have a transaction in the "wrong" account. Just like when entering a new transaction, you can use the drop-down account list _or_ you can just type the account code, or the first few characters of the account name. Liz, I think the issue really boils down to "what exactly is getting copied and pasted?" I don't know the specifics, but as far as I understand it, a transaction in GnuCash looks unitary to the end user, but actually consists of a strange hybrid: a Transaction entry with (at least) two subsidiary splits. Each element has its own interconnected data that may or may not make sense when moved into another account. What happens when you change the context of a transaction will be unpredictable. David T. I totally agree with your entire remarks! Seems like it worked everywhere before (not cash bets!). I have seen the "reverse" when pasting into a card account as well and just figured that was the logic somehow, intended to eventually ask but it was not a big deal. Not that I'm in any way wanting to go back to Quicken but I'm thinking that it was never an issue to Copy/Paste To/From any type of account. Since Quicken isn't a formal double entry accounting package, the data structures don't complicate things. I'd be curious to know whether QuickBooks allows copy and paste to or from any account...
