The Mac GnuCash 3.0 bundle contains the shim libraries for all three supported 
SQL backends.

As John Ralls wrote back then, those who wish to use mysql as their back end 
should be ready and comfortable with being database managers. Trained db admins 
should be undaunted with the installation and setup steps outlined on the wiki. 
There are numerous threads over the years about installing and using the 
various sql back ends that go into detail about the reasoning behind those.
