Yes, that’s what I meant. And I have tried changing the separator, and
eventually changed it back but don’t recall why.

3.8, Maybe you are using the older version of GnuCash.

That Tips Can Not used anymore.

Indeed.

It has been so long since I tried it I never realized it was working. Perhaps I
should test a bit before cluttering up the list.

Thanks!

Maybe I am misunderstanding, but I just tried it. I entered e (for
expenses) : (colon) L (first letter of an expense placeholder account) :
(colon) and then used the up and down arrows to navigate through the items
on the list. On this Ubuntu 19.10 system running GnuCash 3.8, the "pop-up"
list of accounts visible was about as tall as the "active" area of the
register window, so I could see quite a few as I scrolled through the
accounts.

Re: [GNC] Fastest ways to enter my transactions into GnuCash ?

2020-02-28 Thread Adrien Monteleone
I think there is an RFE already filed on this or something very similar.

Certainly, I have found the shorthand method to be pretty quick, unless I
accidentally hit the wrong key, then it is a mess. (particularly hitting ‘;’
instead of ‘:’ for a separator)

It would be nice to have arrow key navigation in addition to cover those cases,
and the cases where I don’t exactly recall how I named an account, but I’m
looking at the list anyway and a down arrow or two would get me straight there
faster than my brain can hit another separator and then a starting letter. In
my case, everything would be at the tip of my right pinky finger.

Adrien

Re: [GNC] Fastest ways to enter my transactions into GnuCash ?

2020-02-28 Thread Stan Brown
Amen to that! When I use the account picker while entering a
transaction, I get all accounts in alphabetical order. It would be MUCH
more useful to get a fan-out by account hierarchy. After all, if I know
I'm entering an expense, other types of accounts just get in the way.

As it is, to use the picker I need to know the beginning of the account
name that I want. But if I knew that, I wouldn't need to use the picker
-- I could just type the first few characters and use autocomplete.

(I think it was a suboptimal design choice to have "only use leaf
account names" as a one setting that affects two things: display in a
transaction and display in the account picker. I don't have enough
screen space to show the entire account hierarchy in a transaction, but
I do want it in the account picker. I'm still using 2.6.18, so maybe
this has been improved in later versions?)

It would be even better if we could navigate the account tree using the cursor
keys, especially the right arrow key to move to the sub accounts.

It depends on if you already have a digital record of the transactions or
not. If you do (e.g. a QIF, OFX, ...) then you can import them in, with
the caveats that if the bank made a mistake you will never notice it.

Otherwise, in my experience the best way to enter transactions is do them
as they come in. Entering a few transactions at a time is relatively
quick. I tend to do them one account at a time (e.g., put all my Amex
transactions together, then all my Visa transactions, etc).

There are also many keyboard shortcuts you can use to speed up entry.
E.g., if you want to enter Expenses:Auto:Fuel you can literally type: e x
: a : f and it will autofill for you. Leverage autofill to help.
In general you should never need to use the mouse to enter transactions
(once you have the correct account register opened).

Hope this helps!

Happy GnuCashing.
