That right click on mru issue will require more research, as it does not
happen for me in release 3.8 running in Linux.

If so it's a long-standing one. Same behaviour in 2.6.21 (Win10).

David,

I don't get that if I right click, in fact I get nothing at all. However if
I left click, i.e. select the file, it does what you say. Do you have your
mouse settings set for a left handed person?

Re: [GNC] RFE: GnuCash's File> Properties menubar item

2021-11-10 Thread David Carlson
I am not a computer programmer, but I think that what I want to see does
not require any additional data to be saved within the data file. I think
that it could be implemented as a minor program enhancement.

Of course, to match the wealth of information for example that Libre Office
can provide about a currently open data file might be another matter, and
perhaps that might be called feature creep. I think that is a higher level
but I would certainly welcome such info as number of transactions, number
of accounts, default currency and perhaps other basic info as well.

filetypes there is much more information about the particular datafile.

I do see these properties when I click on a filetype ".Gnucash" in a
 filemanager.

I would also like to see the same information when I click on the
 menubar
of an open data file, particularly location and size. This would be
extremely useful when there may be several data files with identical or
very similar filenames in the MRU list.

While I know some applications show full path names in their MRU, I personally
consider
that suboptimal. File names can be very long which could result in very wide
menus. To deal
with that some applications put the MRU in a secondary menu and/or truncate the
file
names, which IMO partly reduces the usefulness of the full file name again.

For that reason GnuCash has opted to show the full path location in the status
bar when you
hover your mouse over one of the history menu items.

There has been some discussion on adding more details to the Properties menu in
the past,
but there was no consensus so it never materialized.

Ok, so in your use case you use different filepaths? I get it... financial
data is mission critical. However, I took a different approach. GnuCash
itself saves three deep backups in my config. That will cover any user
error mistakes. Daily I have a script which backs up all my books to a
backup drive to cover hardware failure, disk corruption, etc. That folder
is also encrypted and synced to the cloud.
Any scenario is covered.

Re: [GNC] RFE: GnuCash's File> Properties menubar item

2021-11-10 Thread David Carlson
Stan and Glen, Thanks for the comments.

I do like Stan's suggestion.

Glen, One issue that I am concerned about is that to see where the
currently open file is located it would be necessary to use a gimmick such
as File>Save As, which has some potential hazards if an unintended file
write command is executed.

I would invite further comments.

2021-11-10 Thread Glenn Fowler
Hi David,

Wouldn't it make more sense to keep file information where it belongs, in
the file manager? My opinion is that would be out of the scope of GnuCash
and give it feature creep.

2021-11-10 Thread Stan Brown
Why not change the MRU list to show location, not just file name. That
would avoid a lot of confusion for some of us.
