SystemPreferences

2008-01-14 Thread Fred Kiefer
Why hasn't there been any new release of SystemPreferences in the last
two years? This applications has improved a lot since February 2006 and
it is a very important application as it most likely is one of the first
applications a new GNUstep user will use.

Anybody out there who wants to take up this task?

SystemPreferences

2006-02-23 Thread Chris Vetter

Hi,

just a thought, but wouldn't it make sense to store SystemPreference
modules somewhere else instead of /System/Library/Bundles/ like
/System/Library/Preferences/ or sth similar?

I know, technically, they ARE bundles, but then again, "logically"
they are system preferences and IMHO should be set aside from regular
bundles that are loaded during application/backend/whatever startup.
Makes sense?

I compiled it on FreeBSD 7 over the weekend and it was complaining

GNUSTEP_INSTALLATION_DOMAIN=SYSTEM and it worked fine.

I would like to help wherever I can.

Which SystemPreferences application are you discussing ?

IIRC there are two of them (and I'm obviously in favour of merging them). ;-)

Thanks

This task is already in the works, tests were done and minor fixes
too. A release shall be published soon and a matching RPM package too.

Hi Dennis,

not sure if this is similar to what Chris had in mind
though i'll throw in my opinions

I would say /{System,Local}/Library//
though it is probably better suited to the
ApplicationSupport/ given the current file
system layout

(though IMHO Library/ is what ApplicationSupport/ and
the stuff in Library/ currently should be in
Library/GNUstep or something for local root and just
Library/ for system root possibly, this is a whole
other conversation though)

the problem with Library/Bundles is its a catch all
which contains a bunch of completely unrelated things

i've forever been in favor of removing Bundles/
altogether though probably not vocal about it

so no not /System/Library/Inspectors

/System/Library/Foo/Inspectors/
/System/Library/Bar/Inspectors/

so each app would be in charge of its own heirarchy in
the Library dir and not dependent the correct
Library/ existing

though again IMHO this should be relegated to third
party stuff, and stuff which is required/default
mostly belong in the app's resources itself to allow
for the mythical cp -r/drag and drop installation

otherwise if we have something like

/System/Library/Applications/Foo.app
/System/Library/Bundles/SomeFoo.bundle
/System/Library/Bundles/FooExample.bundle
/System/Library/Documentation/Foo/

we just have a normal unix heirarchy with a bunch of
capital letters and stuff, (things from the same
components split into many places)

where we're kindof going for
Foo.app
Foo.app/Resources/SomeFoo.bundle

and copy Foo.app to Library/Applications

Foo/FooExample.bundle
Foo/Documentation/
and optionally Foo/ to Library/

or something

I am not so much in favour of an ApplicationSupport directory. I do not
understand it from a design point of view. If you want a design where a
folder is the application you should put as much as possible within that
folder. Not starting to re-invent the /usr/share directory... more below :)

the problem with Library/Bundles is its a catch all
which contains a bunch of completely unrelated things

Yep, but we are talking (I think) about two things. Bundles that are
shared amongst applications and Bundles only related to one single App.

The ones that belong to one single app I comment on below, the ones that
are shared are a different story. To make a little comparison. You do
not also create a Libraries/Images dir for libs that do image handling
and Libraries/Sounds for sound related libs. They are all placed within
the same dir.

i've forever been in favor of removing Bundles/
altogether though probably not vocal about it

so no not /System/Library/Inspectors

/System/Library/Foo/Inspectors/
/System/Library/Bar/Inspectors/

But then why shouldn't it be just part of the Resources dir like:
Foo.app/Resources/Library/Bundles
You keep the "what is it" logic, but if the "thing" is only used by the
application it is stored with(in) the application.

Which imho makes more sense.

so each app would be in charge of its own heirarchy in
the Library dir and not dependent the correct
Library/ existing

though again IMHO this should be relegated to third
party stuff, and stuff which is required/default
mostly belong in the app's resources itself to allow
for the mythical cp -r/drag and drop installation

otherwise if we have something like

/System/Library/Applications/Foo.app
/System/Library/Bundles/SomeFoo.bundle
/System/Library/Bundles/FooExample.bundle
/System/Library/Documentation/Foo/

we just have a normal unix heirarchy with a bunch of
capital letters and stuff, (things from the same
components split into many places)

where we're kindof going for
Foo.app

Foo.app/Resources/SomeFoo.bundle

and copy Foo.app to Library/Applications

Foo/FooExample.bundle
Foo/Documentation/
and optionally Foo/ to Library/

or something

To complete it it would imho even be better to have
Foo.app/Resources/Library/Documentation
Foo.app/Resources/Library/Bundles/
Thus keeping the Bundles dir, only on another level. The Bundles dir
shows a "what kind of component is this" from a system/programmers point
of view. Because the user should be kept unknowing of how a system
works. She should never enter the Foo.app dir. Everything within that
directory is only relevant for the developer(s), so on that level it is
important to know what we are talking about, Libraries, Frameworks or
Bundles.

I think that everything that is not "shared" amongst other applications
and is only relevant for a single app, should belong in the App
Resources dir.

I think the idea is to have a toplevel structure where you find Tools,
Applications and Library. Where Library contains the "shared" resources.
If something is not a shared resource it should be placed in the
Foo.app/Resources dir in which the toplevel structure is shown again, like

Foo.app/Resources/Tools
Foo.app/Resources/Library
Foo.app/Resources/Applications

Although Applications is most unlikely, I can imagine that the Tools dir
is there (something like the libexec directory).

Another way is to regard Resources equal to Library, but that would
break the overall logic.

From a users/developers point of view (what do I expect when I have
never seen the system before and how do I get quickly familiar with the
system) the holy three Applications, Library, Tools should appear
everywhere imho.

Greetings,

Dennis

This way you can separately store data that is generated by the
application but neither a preferences file nor some data that the
application is intended to produce.

Examples:

cache file, cookie file, profile of a web browser; index files of a
mail application; color swatches, custom brushes of an image processing
application;

If you want a design where a folder is the application you should put
as much as possible within that folder. Not starting to re-invent the
/usr/share directory... more below :)

All that stuff doesn't belong into the application bundle itself since
I consider it user specific/private data that should not be moved
around if the application itself is copied into another place, used by
another user or the like. So it belongs to
/Users/username/Library/Application Support

I don't know ;-)
As I said, this was just a thought, and *I* could probably be mistaken.

The way I see it is that Bundles are part of an application, that could
possibly be used by other applications as well. For example, think of a
web browser that has a generic history manager in a bundle. An FTP
client could re-use said bundle for it's download history. (Stupid
example, but you get the idea).

Actually it explains what might be a generic Bundle and thus belongs to
the domain System/Library/Bundles...

OTOH, a preference pane of SystemPreferences is different, IMPOV. Sure,
it is implemented as a bundle, but its only purpose is to provide a
"service" in/to SystemPreferences and no other application _should_ use
it (of course they could, but I do not see a point in doing so).

Where as this does not. It should be part of
SystemPreferences/Resources/.../Bundles
(where .../ is whatever is decided on to be the path to the "internal"
Bundles dir (currently I think it is Resources/Library/Bundles... I
can't check 'cause I am installing from scratch)

So, the only reason for storing preference panes NOT in .../Bundles/ is
to distinguish between a 'real' bundle and a pref-pane. IMHO, this would
make the Library directory look a bit 'cleaner.'

I agree with you on the cleaner part. Just not sure where the panels
should end up.

Question to the OSX users -- how/where does OSX store pref panes? Maybe
we could/should just mimick their setup.

Yeah... let's hear it boys and girls. How does our big brother solved
this issue? ;)

Well, as of 10.4, Steve puts preference panes in
/System/Library/PreferencePanes. In general, the Library
directories on OS X are divided up according to function rather than
file types.  There is no "Bundles" directory at all.

That would probably make even more sense. Something like
  /System/Applications/SystemPreferences/Resources/... (Gorm files,
etc.)
  /System/Applications/SystemPreferences/Bundles/... (pref-panes in
here)

In general, if there is .../Applications/Foobar.app/Bundles/
applications could use it to put bundles "away" so other applications
can't use them. Though except for preference panes, I can't think of a
real good reason why you would want to do that. Well, maybe if it's

issue with mixed Objective-C ABI and SystemPreferences

2020-01-05 Thread RIccardo Mottola

Hi!

I was able to compile most of GNUsteps apps with the options discussed
in a previous mail, the only combination I got working is clang +
Obj-C 2.

Most apps seem to work fine, including GWorkspace (which loads
inspectors just fine) and ProjectCenter.

SystemPreferences instead does not start!

I get this issue:

Version 2 Objective-C ABI may not be mixed with earlier versions.

and a crash. Why? No real clue yet.

I checked compilation of SystemPreferences with messages=yes and clang
is used.

More ideas?

Riccardo

Can you say more about this? What version of clang and ld are you using? That
might help us track things down.

no, I don't have old plugins laying around. So very strange. I
uninstalled and no plugins are left. I will investigate further what
could be left over.
